There's a volcano in Chile erupting right now (it started on May 2nd) and oh my goodness look at this picture! This is what is called a 'dirty thunderstorm (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070222-volcano-lightning.html).'
The little-understood storms may be sparked when rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in the plume collide to produce static charges—just as ice particles collide to create charge in regular thunderstorms.
And, it looks utterly amazing. Unfortunately the volcano has forced 4,000 people to flee their homes and is blanketing the nearby town of Chaiten in ash.
