There's a volcano in Chile erupting right now (it started on May 2nd) and oh my goodness look at this picture! This is what is called a 'dirty thunderstorm (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070222-volcano-lightning.html).'

The little-understood storms may be sparked when rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in the plume collide to produce static charges—just as ice particles collide to create charge in regular thunderstorms.

And, it looks utterly amazing. Unfortunately the volcano has forced 4,000 people to flee their homes and is blanketing the nearby town of Chaiten in ash.

I've seen some remarkable pictures from that volcano over the last week. On a good note, usually when there's a continuing erruption such as this, enough ash is thrown into the atmosphere to cool the planet down acouple tenths of a degree. Perhaps that will lessen the climate change discussion this summer.

Those are some pretty awesome pictures, desktop worthy if I ever get rid of Elisha Cuthbert.

Friend found this site (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/06/chaiten_volcano_still_active.html) - just wanted to post it for some more amazing pictures (minus the poor cow).
