Be as short or as descriptive as you'd like. :)
Off Armageddon Reef (http://www.amazon.com/Off-Armageddon-Reef-David-Weber/dp/B00132Q10M/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210103487&sr=8-1)(David Weber)
Foundation series (Isaac Asimov)
Hyperion (Dan Simmons)
Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card)
I'm sure I'll think of more later.

V: The Second Generation (http://www.amazon.com/V-Second-Generation-Kenneth-Johnson/dp/0765319071)
Not into a movie though, but a new TV series, which has been talked about for ever.

Not really a book but a pen&paper roleplaying game that would make the perfect setting for a SciFi movie:
Shadowrun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun)
Where man meets machine meets magic!
The only movie that comes close to the idea of it's vision is Johnny Mnemonic. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113481/)

Serious answer.... ummm.... actually none WAS the serious answer.

I'm with Crusader on a Shadowrun movie. Writers have a lot of freedom when it comes to making movies based on P&Ps. The game encourages unique stories and characters to be developed, plus there is a lot of background information to use.
That said the audience needs to be there for them. The D&D movies, while great as far as transfering a P&P game to the film genre is concerned, were lacking in other departments such as character development. I still liked them because the laughs were there, the teleporting mage for example.
As for movies based on novels, can't say I like the idea. To much content is lost when a screenwriter takes the pages of a book and puts them on the screen. I'll use Asimov's I, Robot for example. .... Nothing more need be said on that matter. As much as I'd like to see the Foundation series in theatres. I feel it would tarnish more of Asimov's books. You can't take the Master's writing and compress it to fit on the big screen.
Now in some cases novels to screenplays are good, not wonderful, but good. They encourage movie goers to pick up the book and read it. Usually at that point they turn on the movie and/or TV series and give it the thumbs down for accuracy. I still enjoy SciFi's The Dresden Files, but the books are amazing in comparison.
Commentary aside, here's the short list of books I'd like to see in theatres.
Sun of Suns (Karl Schroeder) - I'd watch it just for the scenery.

Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan.
Of course, he already sold the rights to make the movie. His style also lends itself to movies.

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. This is easily one of my favorite sci-fi/cyberpunk novels ever, and I think it'd rule on the big screen.

Quoted for great truth. Did you watch the one episode they did that was based off of the first book Storm Front? That one was SO AMAZINGLY GOOD I can't believe the other episodes were so... not as good.
I should also interject that I'd rather see my favorite books get the HBO series treatment, rather than a theatre movie. :love

When I saw the title, I was gonna come in and post Ender's Game, but it seems that somebody beat me to it. We won't mention Holly's name or anything though ;)
Though I must admit that while I loved the book (as well as Ender's Shadow), I'm not sure if many people today would find a movie of it very entertaining, what with the no explosions and flipping cars and super robots. I know I would like to see it, but it'd probably be a rather dull movie for those who haven't read the book.
Now, for my own scifi novel turned movie, I'm throwing my lot in with Andre Norton's The Sioux Spaceman (http://www.amazon.com/Sioux-Spaceman-Andre-Norton/dp/B000HK15HK).
But only if it's done in late night B-movie style, or like Space Truckers :D

Oh, oh, oh!!!!
My novel :) That'd be wonderful.
Actually, I think I'd prefer it to be on HBO. It has gratuitous nudity, violence, and miscellaneous unsavories (or, savories, if you look at it that way).
And, it's kinda' big for a single movie; but, I could see it being a mini-series.
Edit:
Guess I should finish writing it first...

^ I'd watch that. Hell, I'd star in it :cool
I'm going to second Banner's suggestion of the Vurt novels by Jeff Noon. They are so bizarre and unlike anything else I've ever read, as far as sci-fi goes. They'd have to get just the right director and cinematographer, though.

They could start with "Vurt", then "Nymphomation"... :mischief
I wish Noons' books were more accessible, or that people lived closer to me so I could loan mine out. >_>
