It was one of those rare occasions when it was quiet enough in the labs that one could hear the supply trucks moving over the Roswell Army Air Field. The Walker Base had been abandoned in the late 60's; that's what the common people thought anyway. About a mile beneath the surface of the base lay the lowest level of Area 51's laboratory, which was equipped with elite staff and technology. Precious research had been moved to the center after scrutiny had been turned upon the Nevada Area in the 90's. Operations had run smoothly, especially with mutant abilities fueling discovery. This was all thanks to their dear proprietor, Dante Donovan, of the Nyx Corporation.

Marianne C. Randall had been interviewed personally by the esteemed funder and was promptly placed at the base as Lead Scientist of the Forensic and Xenoarcheology Division. She'd graduated from Princeton at age nineteen and held many degrees that served as the foundation of her current position at age twenty-five. Blissfully, she was single with no children; not that she had much time for a personal life. Ground breaking discoveries took up much of her life, thus leading such an intelligent woman to develop an antisocial personality disorder that was conveniently shrouded by her obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Such things were overlooked when her mutant gene came into play; the flawless manipulations of unstable energies proved to be quite effect in her assignments.

As much as she hated to admit it, the same daily routine was growing quite boring; it was a shame that it had taken her so long to realize it. Things were bound to change soon, however. She just had one of those feelings.

--------

It'd been several weeks since she'd been given the new sample to run the standard tests on; the results thus far had been surprising and the most disturbing of which had been the acute effect it had on her. Some of the positive traits she'd recorded thus far were increased activity, faster mental processing, and heightened awareness. Negative traits, which she regarded more seriously, were enhanced irritability, violent reactions to every day trials, and total disregard to authorities; such were only in regards to non-mutant co-workers.

She intended to bring this up to Dante in the personal conference she requested but she still had some tasks to accomplish first; test subjects to scrutinize and more humans to put back in line.

There was no rest for the wicked.
