Well WB has made this official
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-et-potter13mar13,0,7162166.story
Yates is coming back to direct, not sure how I feel on that decision, I didn't mind what I did but I think Kloves is a better screenwriter so I blame any problems with OOTP with the other guy. Plus I think Yates may become a better director the more he works on these films. As for splinting the film in two well I don't think they could have made a film less than 3 hours and do it justice. So it looks like we will get something that is 4.5-5 hours of film and very little of the book will get cut, except the camping trip lol.

What the hell is with David Yates taking a directorial monopoly of all the remaining Potter films? The work he did with OOTP was alright, hardly worthy of giving him the three final films. I really would've loved to have seen Alfonso Cuaron return for the final film. Such a shame.
I don't think there's really any call to split the final film in two, there's plenty of action to enjoy in the book, but when you look at how big it is compared to OOTP(ironically, the film of which was rushed and could've done with at least an extra twenty minutes), you have to wonder what is the purpose of this split. I am 90% certain it is to do with box office greed and nothing to do with bringing the fans a more satisfying cinema experience.
Like you said though, at least Kloves is coming back, the last film certainly suffered in his absence. On the whole, colour me dubious.

I am not sure about that. I don't think they could have done it justice under 3 hours. They would have to cut a lot of stuff out or it rush the movie like the Golden Compass was rushed. It would have to be ROTK length then that would be cutting it close. Of course WB probably don't want close to a 3 and half hour Potter movie either too afraid it will fail. Radcliffe and the producer are both saying it is because of needs of the story over money and Rowling did give her blessing. Although, WB must be very happy right now. They will make at least 2 billion dollars off that one book.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: 636 pages
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: 766 pages
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: 607 pages
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: 607 pages
Bleeding your fanbase dry of cash by milking a franchise and substituting quality for quantity: Priceless.

Well to be fair 200 pages of Order of the Phoenix were boring subplots, like cleaning the house, nothing was learned there. Deathly Hallows really have no subplots. Also this isn't any different than what they are thinking about doing with the Hobbit which is worse because The hobbit is half the length.

I hope I'm wrong but when it comes to films and the studios behind them, I've become quite cynical. If the story has been split in two to make audiences fall further in love with the world and its characters, care more about what is at stake, and wow us with a thoroughly satisfying endgame, then I'm all for it. But if Half-Blood Prince isn't up to par, I'm going to be very annoyed.

Well they are in it for the money they have been since movies were first made, but I have some faith I think the producer Heyman and Radcliffe care. Also for some reason Radcliffe is in love with Yates as a director and I think that had something to do with why they kept him.

If they're going to split it into 2 films, I daresay they're going to be keeping in a fair chunk of the novel then and not cut too much out - there's been a fair amount of fan speculation since DH was released last year that they might have made the locket at the end of the HBP movie a real one and remove the entire Kreacher/break-into-the-Ministry of Magic subplot from the DH movie, but that was on the assumption they'd try to squeeze it into a single film. Now that it's going to be 2 films instead they would probably need it all to keep the running time long enough.
Interesting that Yates got the nod again - nearly every other director that has done the HP movies (including I believe Columbus) had expressed interest in doing DH, plus other noted diectors who hadn't yet had a crack of the whip. I honestly wonder if it might in part be because they want to get some DH filiming underway quickly (maybe even during HBP - not sure if they are still filming or not) and so they don't want to waste time trying to switch directors.

Yikes.... I really hoped Cuaron would get to direct it.... but I have nothing to complain about it being split in two as long as the finished product is something thoroughly enjoyable.

That could be part of it. Switched directors would take more time and HBP and DH would also look the same. I agree with you that not much get cut. The only stuff that will definitely get cut are the camping scenes but they aren't really much of a loss that was probably the slowest part of the novel.
