We have reached that time of the year for College Basketball fans. The next 4 weeks are the most exciting for it. I don't think there is a clear favorite since no team has been able to hold down to the top spot for more than a couple of weeks so I think this is the most up for grabs it has been in a few years. I am thinking some lower seeded team like Xavier or Butler could take the title.

I've been following intently since mid November. My preaseon Final Four was Michigan State, Louisville, UCLA, and UNC. Not sure who I'd pick now. :lol

LOL I know it has been a wild season

All the tournament craziness begins today pretty much since every big tournament is going on today. Syracuse is probably dead losing to Villanova last night killed them. Maryland and Virginia Tech are two teams that need huge runs in the ACC tourney to make it.

So far we have--------------

Missouri Valley: Drake
Atlantic Sun: Belmont
Ohio Valley: Austin Peay
Big Sky: Portland State
Big South: Winthrop
Southern: Davidson
Colonial: George Mason
Summit: Oral Roberts
Sun Belt: Western Kentucky
Horizon: Butler
Ivy: Cornell
West Coast: San Diego
MAAC: Siena

That was wild what happened in the SEC game last night. I was shocked they even finished that game. I know one team will be playing two games today. Also the Minnesota game brought back memories of UConn-Clemson and Duke-UConn from years ago.

At this point, I'd probably take UCLA to win the the title.

I'm just hoping that Purdue can get to the Sweet 16. With as young a team as they have, that would be a major accomplishment and set things up well for the coming seasons.

Watch out for South Alabama and Western Kentucky(both from our conference). They're both dangerous squads capable of an upset in Round 1.

I would say watch out for Butler but I don't consider them a Cinderella team any more. Oh Clemson knocked off Duke to go to their first ACC title game since 1962. I think they can beat North Carolina. They almost beat them twice this year.

CMJ
Mar 15th, 2008, 08:05:22 PM
Butler will probably be a 4 seed. I wouldn't think of them as a Cinderella - though it would be nice to see a school not in a major conference make the Final Four. Though I suppose Memphis would qualify.

George Mason in 2006
Marquette in 2003 (hadn't joined the Big East yet)
Utah in 1996

I believe those were the last 3 non power league schools in the Final Four. Doesn't happen much anymore.

Jedi Master Carr
Mar 15th, 2008, 10:32:51 PM
yeah it is rare, another Final four contender from a mid major would probably be Xavier. I can't think of anybody else off hand who are obvious.

I will post links to the Brackets later. Looking at the biggest surprise to me is Butler getting a 7th seed. I thought they should have been a five. I do think they can take out Tennessee and maybe even Louisville to get to the Elite 8. They are a very dangerous team and at a 7 could be a big sleeper to watch out for. I am happy for Clemson and like their chances at getting to the Sweet 16 again.

Butler vs South Alabama might be the best 1st round game on paper. I'm going with the Jags to upset.

Jedi Master Carr
Mar 17th, 2008, 09:54:04 PM
I don't think so I think Butler is too good. I am actually going to predict that Butler goes deep in the tournament. I think the best game will be Arkansas and Indiana right now.

How about picking games? Anybody interested we can use this thread. The first game is Tuesday Night, Coppin State vs Mount St. Marys. I think I will edit this thread for that purpose.

Butler is great, but trust me...USA is one of those really good floaters in the draw that unless you've seen them play you have no idea. Demetric Bennett is a terrific player.

Now, the smart money would be on Butler, but watch for USA. The Jaguars beat 3 tournament teams(Mississippi State, San Diego, and Western Kentucky twice) and lost on the road by 3 to Mississppi(NIT) and Vanderbilt(by 3).

By that token watch out for our conference Champion WKU. The Hilltoppers don't have a favorable draw with Drake, but we shall see.

LOL I checked before I edited my above posting about picking tomorrow's game. Anyway, I just like Butler I think they can make it to the Elite 8, I think they are a dangerous team right now. No offense to Southern Alabama but I think Butler will be ready for the, but we shall see. I am trying to figure out upsets and it is tough as always.

I definitely think the winner of Butler/USA has a shot to go deep into the draw. Sweet 16 or more.

I have St Mary's over Coppin State.

I will take St. Mary's as well. Coppin State has just lost a lot of games.

Two incredible games today. Western Kentucky and Drake was just a classic game. Man what a game winner. Davidson and Gonzaga was a great game too. American gave everything they had against Tennessee I was really rooting for them. I though St. Mary's would play better than they did. They had a horrible second half. The Afternoon games aren't looking too good overall. Butler pulled away at the end of the first half. Texas has never been behind and Georgetown is looking good. Not sure about UConn they have issues where their offense vanishes in games.

Drake beat Butler. USA beat WKU. Western Kentucky beat Drake.

I think Drake was underseeded more than Butler and they still lost. It's all about matchups sometimes.

I don't agree with that, I know Drake beat Butler in a close game, but I think Butler is a better tournament team. I say that because Butler is a senior team who has been here before. The players on Drake had a little NCAA tourney experience, so I think that makes a difference. Well we had our biggest upset so far. I knew U Conn was in trouble when they lost their best player in Price. He has been their only consistent scorer all season and I think that doomed them in this game.

Both games Saturday should be great. I've liked Louiville ALL season. Both teams will run - might get into the 100's. Xavier matches up well with UCLA I think. They play a similar style - UCLA has more size though.

Hey, one last time...props to Western Kentucky for making the Sunbelt proud. They cut the 21 point lead to 4 and were acouple of bounces from REALLY scaring the Bruins. Helluva comback by the Hilltoppers.

As for tonight...

10 Davidson (W)
3 Wisconsin

3 Stanford
2 Texas (W)

12 Villanova
1 Kansas (W)

5 Michigan State (W)
1 Memphis

Xavier shoots the three better, so that could be a factor. We think alike about Davidson. I think they have a shot at the final four with the way Curry is playing.

Wow Curry is the star of this year's tournament. The kid is amazing, he can just plain shoot. He reminds me a little of Reggie Miller who was so good at him the long range shot. It looks like they will be playing Kansas and with the way Curry and Davidson is playing I like their chances.

So much for my sleeper pick of MSU making the Final Four. Memphis shredded the Spartans.

Well I think Memphis will get beat Sunday. I don't see them getting past Texas. I actually think only 2 #1 seeds will make it. I see Louisville winning too.

Oh here are the games.

3 Xavier
1 UCLA

3 Louisville
1 North Carolina

UNC looked like they were gonna run Louisville out of the ballgame, but Louisvlle made a helluva run. When the game was in the balance the Cardinals blew acouple of opportunities - and that's all a great squad like Carolina needs.

Carolina putting the game away in the last minute here...but this was way closer than the final score would indicate.

UCLA looked dominating in their Regional Final. Are we really gonna get all four one seeds?

Oh and I know he's a tremendous player. But damn Bilas slurping up Tyler Hansbrough was getting to be a little much. Michael Jordan didn't outcompete Hansbrough? Really?? Probably the most competitive person EVER in team sports - and Tyler has him beat?

I know that is just stupid talk.He is a great player but come stop making him out to be the best player ever. of course Bilas is an idiot anyway. I don't think all 4 #1 seeds will make it. I really see Texas beating Memphis at least. I am hoping Davidson beats Kansas too.

Well I am picking here
Texas
Davidson

I was so disappointed Davidson lost. For me outside Davidson, this tournament has been a disappointment. I guess it is because I don't really care about the teams left.

On the one hand I agree with you. It kinda sucks that all four 1 seeds made it. On the other hand in 1993 when you had three 1's and a 2 there were some great games.

True, but I don't care for any of the teams left :p I think UCLA is going to win right now.

LOL I posted that way too late. I haven't been around at all today and for some reason I thought the game started at like 7 or so. Of course not like it matters.

I honestly haven't given Memphis a chance all year. I figured they weren't that great because they played in the weak Conference USA, but they are sure better than I expected

Memphis has AMAZING athletes. UCLA didn't play smart on offense, even though they won the tempo battle. The Tigers will probably win it all Monday. They look like they have NBA talent at every possession.

Unreal.

I agree watching the highlights they were amazing. Kansas looked good but they almost blew that game. They have to play better for the whole game and not just spurts or Memphis could run them off the court.

Memphis doomed themselves with the poor foul shooting. If they had hit 1 of those 4 misses they would have won the game.

They had trouble with FT's all year - you had to figure eventually it would hurt them.

Well they had been shooting better from the line in the tournament. Also their best two foul shooters were at the line. I just never understand how they can't hit those shots. If I was the coach I would make them shoot 1000 fts and run laps till they hit them. Missing FTs just irk me.

They made'm in the tournament when they were up big in games(except for maybe UCLA - where FT's helped put the game away). Under stress you're more likly to revert to old habits. Their only REALLY close game in the tournament before last night was against Mississppi State whee they were horrendous from the stripe. Trying to close out a close National Championship game is about as stressful as you can get. No stunner to me they missed.
