I can't remember most of the movies from when I was a kid and I wanna get some of the movies that were the best for my kids. I just finished watching The Aristocats with my son and it was great. ^_^ I'm going to forever have the songs stuck in my head though. Everybody! Everybody! Everybody wants to be a cat! I know there's plenty of good cartoons nowadays, but you can't go wrong with the classics. So can anyone refresh my memory with their favorites? Theres a lot my mom didn't let me watch too, like Bambi, cuz the mother was killed in it(my mom was diagnosed with a terminal disease when I was a kid and told she had five years to live but little did they know the meds they gave her would work so well). So there are a lot of good ones that I don't know about too probably. I enjoy sitting down and watching these movies with my kids cuz I'm still a kid at heart myself. o.o I love cartoons. LMAO I loved The Aristocats! I love kitties! ^_^ I'm probably going to get The 101 Dalmations soon cuz its coming out of the Disney vault next.

That's one thing I cannot help with..... I hate Disney with a passion, never watched any of their cartoons except The Rescuers. Never watched TV until I was 8 or so, actually :lol
Knowing Nya's watched some when she's been with her dad or his mother, I can only go for the ones she likes, and that's Cinderella and the Lion King.

Doesn't have to be Disney. lol I tried looking into some series on DVD or tape like Eureeka's Castle but one of the tapes is like $50! o.O

Well there wasn't much in the way of cartoons over here on TV or so unless it was Disney.

I'd suggest looking up some old black&white silent slapstick "movies" - they're about the only thing non-Disney that I can think of, even though they're not cartoons.

The Fox and Hound; Robin Hood (the one with Robin as a fox) off the top of my head.

We've got Fox and The Hound, but not the sequel. Totally forgot about Robin Hood though! That used to be my all time fav! :o I can't believe I'd forget that one.

Aladdin; Rescuers Down Under...

I loved Robin Hood too, in all it's sixties/seventies goodness. Oh my goodness, when I was old enough to tell the music cracked me up.

Anything by Miyazaki: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Spirit Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porko Rosso, etc, etc,

My favourite Disney films are Pinocchio, Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood, The Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin.

I think they've got most of the Disney classics covered. So...more contemporary fare!

Anything Pixar. Seriously. So long as it has "Pixar" stamped on it, you win.
Chicken Little was decent enough, though after the 2nd time you'll probably wanna let the kid watch on your own. >.>
Disney's Three Musketeers (features Mickey, Donald, and Goofy) is a newer title featuring the classic characters.

Going a little old school on this last one: Even though they're not technically movies, any Thomas the Tank Engine videos are good. They're fun, and they teach your kids good stuff like sharing, getting along well, listening to instructions...the whole bit. Whoo.

Wasn't there a King Arthur/Merlin one? I used to love that one :) Where Merlin turns Arthur into a fish...

ah, memories.

Having babysat for my bebe cousin for two years, I've seen WAY too many "Kid" movies. Disney is pretty good, although, you'll be singing the songs for days - the older movies are better, IMO. Robin Hood used to be one of my favorites :D Pixar movies are good too. I would suggest getting something you'd be interested in too, since you'll probably be seeing them a ZILLION TIMES!

As for Tv shows, Little Bear is really good and available on DVD. It always made me fall asleep though XD

LOL Sword in the Stone is awesome. The fight between Merlin and that witch is hilarious. I need to get on Amazon and put that in my bookmarks right away. I completely forgot. Has anyone ever seen The Last Unicorn? I've heard of it a few times but I've never seen it. Is it any good?

No, The Last Unicorn is not good. Ugh, I hated that movie, so... *shudders*

Sorry, personal bias. Some people love that movie. I couldn't stomach the early anime-ness of the design.

I've heard of the Last Unicorn and I actually quite enjoyed it. I wouldn't put it down as one of my all time favourites, but it was pretty good in my opinion.

As for kids movies, theirs also Beauty and the Beast, and Peter Pan. For some older kids, non cartoon movies, the Neverending Story, and the Neverendind Story 2.

I watched the Last Unicorn as a child and it scared me to death. Of course, same goes for The Wizard of Oz.

I didn't really like the wizard fight in Sword and the Stone as a small child either. :uhoh

Most of you kids are still rather little, under 9 or so? Or you just have the one, right?

:::rattles head:::

Hmm, that makes it a little more difficult. The first film that popped to mind was "Grave of the Fireflies", but the subject matter would probably be too traumatic for young children. ;) If you see it, it will stick with you, though. I reccommend it to anyone for their library.

Ahhhh, I got one.

Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumber Land.

Nothing too crude , suitable for all ages, but highly imaginative in a way that doesn't talk down and it's main protaganist acts like a real kid would. :)

Unfortunately, looks to be out of print..and fetching exhorbitant prices from resellers..boo. That's a bit sad, as i just realized that I want to get a copy. Maybe i can find a copy on eBay..that isn't a bootleg. :(

(EDIT: I watched this when I was about 10 and it seemed rather cool, but is probably way too scary little ones)

Maybe, The Secret of Nihm or the Iron Giant?

Her son is 3, her daughter is a baby, IIRC. So we're talking movies for toddlers.

This film needs to come with a double warning. Definately not for children. It is the most harrowing, gut-wrenching film I've ever watched. As for adding it to my library, I have most of the Studio Ghibli collection but I refuse to get that based on the fact that I'll never watch it again. Amazing film but once is enough for me.

I second the Iron Giant. It's such a great film and is so underrated.

Just found Aladdin for a great price at FYE, it's used but it's in like new condition, and we're going back tomorrow for the box set that has Aladdin 2 and 3 for $30 brand new. When I went today to the mall I was looking for clothes for my daughter and had spent what I had in cash by the time I got to FYE so my husband and I are going to go back tomorrow. We got our tax return so we're getting the kids some new movies with what we don't pay for bills or use to move, mostly because my son is sick and it's keeping his mind off of how bad he feels. Aladdin was probably the only one of Disney's movies that had successful sequels. Loved them all. Another one I'd love to get that isn't really a classic is The Emperor's New Groove. Love the music in it and it's hilarious. lol

Toys Story, and it was one of the first 3D cartoons too, I think. I personally enjoyed The Little Mermaid a lot too.

Anyone ever hear of The Black Cauldron? When we were ordering The Sword in the Stone they had it listed as something people ordered along with it.

I know it. I think I've seen maybe 20 minutes of it. Looked good enough that I regretted coming into it late and having to walk away from it before it was done. I know wikipedia isn't the best source of info on stuff, but here's what it has to say, if you're interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Cauldron_%28film%29

I figure the part about censorship in the film will be particularly relevant to your goal of kid-friendliness.
