Now we all know that this movie is Wolverine's origin story, right? But did you know that he's being joined by like 50 other X-Men characters? Ok, I exaggerate a little...a LITTLE. One is Gambit. One is Deadpool! :eee Link to Variety article. (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117981136.html?categoryid=13&cs=1)

Cast list (so far - they seem to be adding more every day):
Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool
Hugh Jackman - Logan / Wolverine
Liev Schreiber - Victor Creed / Sabretooth
Taylor Kitsch - Remy Lebeau / Gambit
Danny Huston - William Stryker
Kodi Smit-McPhee - Young Logan (rumored)
Lynn Collins - Silver Fox
Christian Clark - ???
will.i.am - John Wraith
Dominic Monaghan - BeakI don't know who Beak is, though. Still, I'm super excited for the movie regardless because I :love Hugh Jackman. :D Also I can't really figure a better actor to play Deadpool than Ryan Reynolds. :thumbup

Gambit is fanservice. He has nothing to do AT ALL with Wolverine's origins. They're just appeasing all the fans they upset by not including him in X2 or X3. Otherwise, the rest of the cast makes sense, though I can't imagine Deadpool having a whole lot to do until they "copy" Wolverine's power into him.

Sounds like they're integrating as many characters as possible for no other reason other than merchandising. Still, I'll be there...

I am kind of saddened by the casting choice for Deadpool. The guy playing Gambit looks like he will be decent, though.

It sounds cool although how will Liev Schreiber play Sabertooth? Sabertooth is like 7 feet tall. Either he will be in a lot of costume and make up or they are making Sabertooth CGI.

DEADPOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!

Holy fricken hell! I'd see it just for Deadpool. I'll bring a spatula to the theater with me in honor. And Gambit too!!! Two of my three favorite marvel characters. I will still hope for a Mister Sinister appearance...

Zeke
Feb 23rd, 2008, 11:42:44 AM
Sinister is about as meaningful to Wolvie's origins as Gambit is. Hell, even Deadpool doesn't matter that much to it. I want those characters in movies, too, but not as useless fanservice and filler.

I suppose Deadpool is loosely connected to Wolverine, since they are both products of Weapon X - but I'd rather they just gave Deadpool his own movie than make him play second-fiddle to Wolverine. He's a great character and it will be a shame if they waste his potential, just for the novelty of having him in the movie.

Zeke
Feb 23rd, 2008, 12:04:30 PM
Yes, Deadpool has the Weapon X connection to Wolvie, but it happens AGES after Wolverine had the admantium bonded to him and all that. It just doesn't make any sense to have him in the origin movie. Wolverine 2? Hell yeah, bring the Deadpool. Just...not in the origin film. I don't want these other characters turning into Venom.

Pierce Tondry
Feb 23rd, 2008, 04:12:30 PM
Wolverine's origins pretty much include the Weapon X/Alpha Flight days. Before that he's not really Wolverine. Just good old Logan.

An entire movie about the period where he goes through the adamantium bonding process wouldn't work that great as an action flick. Maybe as a documentary. :)

Gambit makes me boggle though. He's got zero relationship to the standing origins, unless they decide to seriously alter the story. Not sure I'd be a fan of that.

Feb 23rd, 2008, 05:24:15 PM
I think they're trying to introduce some other characters to spin off into other movies if 'the fans like them.' So, who knows how much actual screen time any of the other ones will get. From what I've read the plot pretty much revolves around Logan's beef with Victor Creed.

I disagree. Ryan Reynold's humor is very much the way I imagine Deadpool delivering his lines. It seems like an excellent choice to me.

Good picture, though at first I thought it might've been something re-used from X2. >.> The background looks like Alkali Lake.

Also, not to derail the thread, but I followed one of the links to the Hulk pics and those look awesome, too. :D

Well technically since we're looking at an origin movie that deals with his beginnings in the Weapon X program, it should look like Alkali Lake. :mneh

Dasquian Belargic
Mar 4th, 2008, 08:03:13 PM
My guess is that they want someone who can act fairly well, unlike the guy from the first movie (Tyler Mane) who was just a WCW wrestler. Not that he didn't do a good job of playing Sabretooth... I just figure they want to give the character more depth this time around.

He doesn't need lines! He just has to growl and yell a lot. :D

But yeah, I get what you two are saying. Still, I liked the look of the older Sabretooth better.

Dasquian Belargic

The old Sabretooth looked a lot more like the villain I remember from the cartoons and comics. Hopefully this guy will deliver the goods in terms of performance.

Well, we also don't know what scene this is. It's an Origins film, it could be Sabertooth before he got all native looking :)

Either way, I rather have him talk. Sabertooth wasn't always some mindless freak growling all the time.

It does look good, I just hope that things tie together nicely with how many mutants we have in it.

And I really hope Gambit has a part to play that makes sense and isn't just in there because he's popular.

Does anyone think that was Emma Frost in the trailer? Or was that another ice mutant I just don't know? The many mutants it the only thing that worries me. It could become a problem like X3.

Miranda Tarkin
Dec 15th, 2008, 01:12:49 PM
I believe that was another mutant. I don't see Emma listed in the credits. Besides Emma doesn't have ice powers ;) Diamond skin (which makes little sense :x) and telepathy

Dec 15th, 2008, 01:35:44 PM
The production behind this film looks sharp, the trailer is edited a little sloppily but overall, I'd say it looks promising. And that mutant in the trailer definately had diamond skin.

I will have to watch it again, because if that is the case, then yep it's probably Emma!! :eee

Trust me, I would be overjoyed to see her. She's a favorite character of mine.

Droo
Dec 15th, 2008, 01:45:21 PM
I've no doubt about it. Watch a 1080p version of it if you want to get a closer look, she's all diamond encrusted like a big piece of jewellery and the shimmering is definately akin to the shine from diamonds rather than frost. Having said that, it still doesn't neccessarily mean it is Emma Frost but fingers crossed.

Tend to agree, the trailer wasn't all that impressively produced. If anything, it makes the movie look like a lower-budget production - which is fine if they've got a great script. But I didn't think the script was a strong point for any of the X-Men movies.

My reaction is meh. I'll wait to hear from the reviews.

John Jackson
Dec 15th, 2008, 02:36:01 PM
Yay - Gambit uses his bo!

I'm also pretty sure that the woman in question is Frost - I agree with Droog's analysis of the visuals.

The trailer was a bit crappy, but from the look of things the film is going to cover quite a broad span of Wolverine's history, which is good. Maybe the presence of Gambit and Frost could lead into some sort of Hellfire Club? Okay, so the former wasn't involved there in the comics, but the way they seem to be taking the character wouldn't exactly make him out of place.

I have to admit it isn't the greatest trailer I've ever seen, but in the long run, the trailer doesn't have to sell me the movie. I will be there opening weekend no matter what. Because it's Wolverine, bub.

Plus, if nothing else, it looks like I get plenty of Hugh Jackman nearly naked, and that makes me a happy woman. :love

The shot of Logan bursting out of the tank was pretty :cool "Become the animal!"

Gambit looks excellent, great smirk - and yup, I'd agree that the blonde appears to be none other than our favorite White Queen, Emma Frost :eee

At this point in time, I still think the less we see of Deadpool, the better. I stand by what I said earlier - bringing him in, when he isn't an already established character, means he won't get the treatment he deserves.

Otherwise, the rest of the cast makes sense, though I can't imagine Deadpool having a whole lot to do until they "copy" Wolverine's power into him.

The reason he wasn't in the other three was simply because none of this was handled by Marvel. Now that Marvel Studio is in the equation they have to appease because it's sort of their motto with the movies. They are going for the comic book audience directly, with the thought that it will automatically hit with everyone else.

I just wonder if they are going to, after seeing Deadpool's cameo in the trailer, end up with the scars at the end of all this.

Later in the trailer, around the part where it shows wolverine running between what looks like cages and cutting them with his claws, it shows him fighting a bald Deadpool, but its impossible to tell if he has scars or not.

Blah?! Marvel isn't handling this either? I should've known. :P Well, I still feel Gambit should've come in on X-Men 2. The 3rd one would have been just too much, especially with Angel and all these others flying around. It would have fit real well in 3.

I hope they do something with the 4th wall with Deadpool too. It'd be another little tidbit for the fans.

I went to the midnight showing, and yes, it was better than X3. The whole thing was handled rather well, with strong performances from all actors. It kept as close as it could to the source material. So...details?

1: I'm not a Gambit fan, but they did him really well. In fact, I kind of got this "We're sorry he wasn't in X2 or X3" vibe from just how good that actor did and the amount of screentime he got. The fans I went with seem to have unanimously accepted said apology. Personally I was more excited about Blob, who seems lifted straight out of the comics and put on the screen. If any character was perfect, it was him.

2: Cyclops was better in this than he ever was in the X-Men trilogy, which was sad. Emma Frost was good too, but I really hope they're setting her up for something major in an upcoming movie.

3: Deadpool was right, but there were some moments of "Okay, what?" He was scarred properly for the last fight, but he had katana blades in his arms that he could sheathe and unsheathe like Wolverine's claws...but there's not enough space in his forearms for them. How does he bend his arms when they're not out!? Also, he had Cyclops's powers, which was just...not right. I don't get why they did that at all, except as maybe an "Oh crap" sort of moment for ol' Wolvie. They did a good job on his teleporting, making it a power rather than technology, but it feels like this was the entire reason for John Wraith to be in the film, which really sucks because that character was pretty cool.

More to come when I've had some sleep.

My theory as to why they did Deadpool that way: Some studio exec was like "wait, they give Wade Wolverine's healing factor? OMG! *lightbulb* why not give him ALL the different powers!?! AND adamantium and swords coming out of his arms like Wolvie's claws!! Genius!" *gives self a raise*

Saw it this afternoon, and it was okay, worth a Sunday matinee price. Could've been better, but it could have been a whole lot worse too. And yes, it's definitely better than X3. Now, I have to admit that I'm not as deeply into all the X-Men stories as a lot of you here are...my X-Men background is basically the cartoon series (which I watched religiously) and the other movies, so I wasn't familiar with Deadpool, so I can't say if they did him right or not. But I did find it a little strange that he would have been able to survive all that genetic manipulation and mutation...it seems to me that his body would have given out at some point. But that's just my two cents.

Personally, I think they could have cut one of the Wolvie/Sabretooth mano a mano scenes, I felt like there was one too many of those. And some of the special effects were just a wee bit sloppy. Plus there was a lack of tension about certain characters' outcomes, like Stryker and Sabretooth, since they were in X-Men movies. But Danny Huston and Liev Schrieber were both good in the roles.

I was really glad that I avoided spoilers, so I was completely taken by surprise by Patrick Stewart's cameo. That totally ROCKED. It also explains how Scott ended up at Xavier Academy. It also left me wondering if Jean Grey was one of the children being held prisoner, but I don't recall seeing a red-haired girl. Unless I just missed her.

Overall, even with its flaws, I still enjoyed it and am glad I saw it. I just feel like I want to send a note to Hugh Jackman's personal trainer, thanking him for such a swell time :hug.

Jean Grey's background was covered in X3. Scott was pretty well covered in XO:W. I'm hoping the next origins movie to be about Gambit, where they will detail about his escape from 3-mile island hopefully.

Or maybe the next one should be about Storm. And the shadow king. Heh heh heh.

The only thing that bothered me the most was what they did to Deadpool. That being said it was pretty much a hybrid Deadpool/Sentinel. Hopefully that'll be fixed in the next film

As for the other revisionist stuff, they took stuff from the Origin comic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_(comic)) (which I haven't read) and did some changes to the Weapon X project. Still it fit though, I thought.

Much, much better than X3.

May 6th, 2009, 01:00:01 PM
I think the idea with Deadpool is that this is his origin as well.

I can understand fans being upset that he wasn't cracking wise during the last fight, but the Easter egg at the end shows that his mouth isn't wired shut anymore. Not only that, they pulled up a hallmark of his character - breaking the fourth wall - when he looks directly at the camera and goes "Shhhhh!" Seems he knows he's a potential spoiler.

That still doesn't fix the ninjato (not katanas by the way) blades coming out his forearms or the Cyclops eye beams, but I can easily see him healing up, donning the red jumpsuit, and turning into the motor-mouthed Deadpool all the fans want to see.

EDIT: D'oh, put up the "I'm a Marvel/I'm a DC" video with Deadpool, only to realize that someone did that a page back...

Apparently there are SIX after the credits scenes, and in San Francisco they got to see one that was Ryan Reynolds standing over the dead Deadpool - apparently it was a clone which makes the whole thing better and much more palatable - I can't believe they bothered showing any other scenes.

Well, I guess they'll all be on the DVD... I'm not planning on seeing the movie repeatedly until I see all six.

If you want to know what I saw, it was a close-up of the wreckage of the cooling tower. One of Deadpool's adamantium blades protrudes from the rubble, and it slowly slides back out of view. Then his arm reaches out from under a pile of debris and touches his severed head. The eyes open, as does the mouth, and he looks at the camera and goes, "Shhhhh!"

I don't know how it correlates with the other ones. I was the only one in the theater who stayed for it.

Kale the one you saw is the same one we saw at our showing.

You must have interpreted it differently than I did, then.

SIX scenes? Wow. Yeah, hopefully all of them will be on DVD.

Our print had the same scene you had, Kale...a handful of people stayed around for it, someone had even asked if there was something after the credits.

I'll be having to wait for DVD to see these scenes myself. I was one of those naughty people who watched the workprint, and I had an entirely different scene after the credits. Stryker walking down a road, his feet have worn through his shoes and are bleeding, and then the military comes and finds him and says they need to talk to him about the death of that general he impaled. It was a lame scene, glad to hear that the theaters had better.

No, Kale - when we saw the movie it was the severed head shhhhh after the credits, but I heard yesterday about the other one with Ryan Reynolds standing over the dead Deadpool, indicating it was a clone.

If that makes sense.

Other scenes I heard rumor of but didn't see one of the escaped kids (presumably for the First Class x-men movie that won't have Angel or Iceman in it, what rubbish), and a Gambit one.

The Stryker scene is in every print, during the credits. After the credits all roll there are other scenes, apparently up to six different ones, though most people either see Deadpool touching his severed head and saying "shhh" to the camera, or Wolverine drinking to remember in Japan.

I read the Reynolds one isn't there and that the person who claimed he saw it made it up

I saw it today and I liked it overall. It was a lot better than X3. I can't complain about Deadpool because I know so little about him. I liked how they portrayed Sabertooth better in this film and Jackman was great as always. It was a good way to spend an afternoon in a theater at least.

Enjoyable film - but on the other hand, enjoyable doesnt mean good. In fact really it was pretty much crap. But it's got a few fights and explody bits amongst a story that makes not a lick of sense.

Enjoyable. Glad I wasn't expecting anything.

My biggest complaint is what the hell was up with Gambit jumping in and busting up Logan finishing off Victor? WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!?!?! GAH! Made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Oh well. Still enjoyed it for what it was.

Well, at that time I think Gambit thought that Logan and Victor were both enemies, so he thought to destroy them both

Also, I just thought of a good idea for another Origins movie.

The primary plot would revolve around the origin of the Scott Summers and Jean Gray relationship, with both of them meeting in their teen years, with the primary atagonist of Mr Sinister.

EDIT: After doing a little research, it seems there are four further X-men movies in the works. A sequel to the Wolverine origin movie, a Magneto origin movie, a movie detailing the formation of the X-men, and a deadpool spin-off movie.

What on earth was I thinking when I said that? Why did I think this excretement was in any way shape or good good? Why the hell did I watch this again??????

I will now give myself an uppercut cause DAMN was I dumb or what?

I finally saw this yesterday and I'm pretty familiar with the source material and really enjoyed the movie. It wasn't great by any means but it was a comic book on screen...about the best way to describe it.

Yes, he thought both were enemies and that Logan was there to capture him and take him back to the experimental lab facility.

But even *if* Gambit thought he could take both of them out - it doesn't make any common tactical sense.

You are fighting for your life against someone you think is there to haul you off like a lab rat. And if they are from the secret agency to do that they most likely have others nearby getting ready to crate you up and haul your ass out of there. Suddenly boom! that someone is getting their ass kicked by someone else. THUS they have forgotten completely about you. Now... do you:

A - run like hell before anyone else shows up packing mutant dart guns

or

B - jump in between the two assholes trying to kill each other thus giving more time for a possible retrieval/strike team to get into position to tag and bag you

Keep in mind that you are suppose to be a card shark excellent gambler scoundrel who knows how to play the odds who IS NOT a hero archtype.

That whole exchange was not thought out and still pisses me off. That's what I call *lazy* writing/film making. There were objectives that needed to be met in regards to the story - and whatever committee was controlling the decision making process in the film took the easy route without thinking it through or over ruled anyone on the creative team who might have been trying to make the scene make sense.
