Tell me about... Prom

So, my place of work is hosting it's first annual "80s American Prom" and I thought who better to ask for advice on what to wear than American's who might have attended prom in the 80s.

Or not ^_^; Either way, you guys are going to have a better idea than me!

Prom isn't something that is really done over here, but we're having one just for the sake of getting dressed up a little silly and dancing to some cheesy tunes. Any suggestions on what to wear would be fantastic :p

phew. I thought you wrote "pron." For girls it meant big, solid hair and bad pastel-colored dresses. For guys, it means big, solid hair and bad pastel-colored suits. Frilly stuff on the suits or dresses is optional, but highly recommended.

Puffy dresses, "wave" bangs, crimped hair. You could always wear neon - that's something I remember wearing in the 80s. ^_^;

Basically prom is 4 stages. Photos, Dinner, Dance, After-Dance.

Traditionally men wear tuxedos and the women wear fancy gowns. However, in the proms I went to (I went to three), I saw everything from tuxedo shirts to guys dressed like Captain Morgan and girls in a whole range of weird things.

So once you're dressed, you go to one house and take photos. Photos for hours. And hours. And hours. Okay, it isn't that bad but it feels like it. After you take the photos, its time to go to dinner. A lot of people get a limo, a lot of people drive themselves to save on that cost. Dinner is pretty self-explanitory, fancy resturaunt, spend lots of money, etc. etc.

Now it's the dance. Basically it's whenever you arrive there to midnight of the butt-grinding style of dancing to the rap/dance mix music. They serve finger foods and beverages. Occasionally you'll get a slow song and dance accordingly. Sometime during the night, the prom king and queen will be named. These were voted for usually the week before in school. They get crowned and then its back to the dancing.

The after-prom stuff is usually a "sleepover" at someones house. More times than not it involves alcohol. But that's about it in terms of prom. And the photo below, that's one of the many millions of pictures I took at my first prom, in the series of photos getting into the car.

There are definitely some 80s movies you can watch to get some inspiration. I think the guy who made Breakfast club made one like that.

Yes, to big bangs and crimped hair. Some little white lace gloves, and white lace socks with gaudy-colored high heels, over a different color of tights. ;)

Tuxedos, nice restaurants, and finding creative ways to get drunk when faculty is on the lookout for drunk kids. Also dancing like retards.

I'll see if I can find my senior prom pic and upload it. I looked quite awesome if I may say so myself. Of course thats when I was at the peak of my physical shape and the tux I wore was one of those weird, post-modern styles.

I will never tell my kids about prom. How boring. Life after high school is much more interesting. Trust me, I climbed a mountain.

Hijacking? No, we're telling you about Proms and basically we're saying Proms suck much butt :)
