Months behind, but here are a few pics from my vacation to Italy earlier this summer.
Me at the Colosseum
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy1.jpg
Trajan's Column. My girlfriend and I both agree that we would much prefer this type of remembrance of our great feats in life than something like the Arc de Constantino.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy3.jpg
Me standing by a column at the entrance to the Pantheon. This might be the single most impressive building I have ever seen.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy2.jpg
A view of the city of Florence from the top of Il Duomo.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy4.jpg
Because I'm a giant science nerd, a pic of Galileo's original telescopes.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy8.jpg
This was the view from our hotel room in Bellagio, along Lake Como in northern Italy.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy5.jpg
A shot of the hotel we stayed at in Bellagio. If anyone has watched the TV series "1000 Places to See Before You Die," this is the hotel that was featured on their visit to Lake Como. (Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni).
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy6.jpg
A villa on a peninsula in Lake Como. Some here may recognize it... this was the place that George Lucas used for several of the Naboo shots from Episode II, including the balcony scene in which Anakin and Padme kiss for the first time.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii93/ndkroken/Italy7.jpg
I have a lot more, but that will have to suffice for now.

Christin and I are planning to go to Rome next year, and this is pretty much one of the major things I am excited to see. This would be like FDR having a mausoleum that had the entire graphical chronology of World War II on it. The amount of historical content on this thing is astounding, as far as the minutiae of warfare is concerned. The only parallel I can think of is Caesar's field memoirs of the Gallic wars. The History channel had a dramatization special on Roman "shock & awe" in the Dacian wars that pretty much pulled directly from the column as well as a few other battlefield artifacts. If I could find it I'd buy it immediately.
Trajan is my favorite of the Caesars. Damn dirty foreigner (the first non-Italian to be the first citizen), Militarily gifted, winning major wars in Dacia and Parthia, and presided over the Empire at it's most massive territorial zenith. He ruled from northern england to the persian gulf. He's also one of the more progressive of the Caesars, and dialed back much of the religious persecution, or just outright declined to enforce some of the laws against certain sects. I mean, the Catholic Church bestowed the guy some honor, and he was still a dirty pagan in the truest sense. That's a lot of chutzpah.

One of the big things I can recommend regarding Rome is to start your days early if you can. Most of the tourist attractions open at reasonable hours (9 or 10 AM), but most of the rest of the city doesn't really get moving until almost mid-day. For example, we were able to get into the Colosseum right away when it opened and got to see both it and most of the ruins of the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill before the crowds got heavy. Rome is definitely a night-owl city... it was not uncommon for even the side streets to have activity well into the early hours of the morning. Many restaurants don't even open for dinner until 7-8PM.
My girlfriend and I spent 3 days in Rome, and we packed a lot into that schedule. There were a few things that we missed just because of limits to our time. But, we were pretty happy with how things went.
I unfortunately don't have any pictures of it, since photography was not allowed in the gallery, but we did make a point to see Michelangelo's "David" while we were in Florence. We saw a lot of art and sculpture on our trip (including the Vatican galleries and the Sistine Chapel, the Uffizi in Florence, the Galleria Borghese in Rome), but this was the single most impressive piece we saw. It's one thing to see pictures of it in books and on the Internet... it's another to see it in person. A close second was the statue of Christ the Redeemer at the Santa Maria sopra Minerva basilica in Rome.
Trajan's Column is truly impressive to see in person as well. I think my favorite location we saw in Rome however was the Pantheon. It's an absolute marvel of architecture... it's amazing to think that it was completed in 125 AD, under Hadrian's rule, and was the largest domed building in the world for more than 1700 years.

Pictures of my daughter's first day of school - the pictures AT school were taken by someone else who will send them to us later, but I took some of her and her "school bag" when we got home.
The "bag" in question isn't her proper school bag, of course, but something kids here get on their first day - filled with all kinds of little things and sweets. This particular one I spent the last two nights putting together... especially the little fairy was a huge pain in the behind to make... grrr...

Aaaaand one more of Skeletor in his costume. The bunny in the background was an easter gift for Charley. I was angry at him for some reason, but still wanted to get him something for easter, so I bought a stuffed rabbit, slit its' throat and pulled out the body stuffing, then took a red marker and colored on blood. After that I stuffed the body with a movie and a star wars action figure ^_^;

Liz, the stripey shirt is a telnyashka, and you can find them pretty easily online at any place selling russian military surplus. Red Soldier (http://www.redsoldier.com/All-Products?search=telnyashka) has them for about $15 each. They're seriously warm and comfy undershirts.

It started out as a beautiful night - Mr and Mrs Mehling were enjoying a rare evening alone. The house - empty of the usual war cries and pleas for mercy - was blessedly clean and as they sat on their newly-finished deck, sipping wine and exchanging loving glances as the waves lapped gently below, they remarked on how unusually vibrant the sky was.

"Why, I believe you're right, darling!" Replied Mrs. Mehling. "Perhaps we'd best go inside!"
"Yes, yes, quite." Agreed Mr. Mehling.
Things began to get very strange.

Well, my sister's cat doesn't like being picked up. She always tries to escape over my shoulder, and when that happens, I bend over so the cat makes less use of her claws on me. The result is that she usually sits on/curls up on my back. Taken with my webcam within the past ten minutes.

ROFL you brought pieces of pottery from a vacation in Turkey to the US?
A little legal advice just in case you or someone else who wants to to Turkey does not know that: Bringing pottery or similar stuff that might have historical value out of the country is considered a crime in Turkey.
Depending on the value you might face several years of prison.
Darven
Jan 5th, 2009, 05:26:05 PM
Heh... yeah. Not to the US - to Germany.
<-- ist Mara, Hallo Peter! ;)
Back then they didn't care all that much about that law. My dad once carted an entire plinth of a stone column home (we drove down there in our minivan) that the mechanic at the camping site we were staying at was using to put his oil cans on.
Wouldn't bother trying to bring anything home on the plane - hell no! But they only searched the cars of Turkish families leaving Turkey in those days; everyone else just got a wave through. Which was very considerate of them, seeing that we'd got half a sarcophagus of graverobbers' loot in the car somewhere.
The town we were staying at had a giant necropolis that stretched for miles. Seemed a shame not to buy up some of the stuff the locals had "liberated"; in those days the government was only interested in Ephesus, Troja and Catal Höyek and everything else was like a giant free-for-all for those who weren't afraid of the occasional snakes and critters living in the ruins all over the rest of the country, and wanted to make some good money.
Oh yeah. Fun days. I even have two paving stones from a roman road downstairs somewhere.... hehehe...

If by "superior" you mean "average" then yes you are correct.

Some of the new American bills are getting on the color bandwagon. I got a 5 a few weeks ago that looked like a rainbow threw up on it.

It's not as colorful as our Canadian Monopoly Money (I would take a picture, but I have $4 in my wallet, which is coin, not bills).

Allow me, Miss Mandi - the lighting is horrid, but you can get the general idea. Our money isn't just money it's fuckin' art.

Oh god this is so embarrassing. So there's this project in the works. It's just meant to be amongst friends but one thing led to another and... just yeah.
Anyway, besides the MISSING EYE, what's the verdict on this tentative jacket photo? Yay/nay? Any suggestions on how to make it less of a travesty? Better font ideas?

Oooh, its very pretty. I like it. :)
The font's pretty good, I like the hand written look. I think maybe you should wear more than just a spaghetti strap, it looks a little like its there all by itself. But then, this might end up looking better than the other. So, you know, up to you. :)

More Owen. He learned how to stand up on his own last week. Now he's into everything twice as fast.
And eat. Mmm. Eating real food is messy.
