Well that was fun, but we've got other things to do.
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/sat21.jpg

Going to a museum is always a lot of fun, and especially when it's showcasing things from ancient Rome :D This exhibit we went to today was about Pompeii, so you can imagine how excited we were to get there. Unfortunatey cameras weren't allowed into the exhibit rooms, and we had to turn our cellphones off, but I did get a few pics of the outside banners :)

On the left:

And the banner on the right:
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/sat23.jpg

We did walk out of the museum with almost 200 bucks worth of swag though!

Charley bought these books:

And I bought these:

I also snagged some nifty postcards!

We also got two mini-fresco thingies that were pretty dang sweet:

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/sat28.jpg

I bought Charley a neat little Roman spoon :D

Glare sucks, but this print is really awesome.

And last but not least, another fresco print. The glare on this one came out less crazy, thankfully.

And that was our Saturday! Sadly the snow was long gone by the time we got home. *le sigh* Oh well.

haha, sounds like you need some northern lovin' ;) There's plenty of snow in NY and up in Vermont. Not to mention, slopes for boarding ;)

Looks like you had fun, never the less!!!

Awesome Roman swag!

Do you people have any idea how lucky you are to have such a picturesque little slice of the world like that to yourselves? Plus snow and art in one day? Colour me green with envy!

Great photos and videos, you two. :)

The downer today was seeing a really little kid (maybe 3-4?) who was killed at Pompeii. It was so tiny :(

2) Oh, oh, oh snowboarder! One of these days we are going to my cousin's cabin in Whistler. For real. 0_0

That one, the flexing, and the one where she's hugging the telephone pole I backed into are the best. I need to find a weekend to visit again.

Even if it was a little piddly hill, it was still fun to strap onto the board and putter down ^_^;

I'd have fallen over and broken something before I even tried the first hop. Snowboarding is not for me, I'll keep my skis thanks.

Was the museum one of the ones where they have the dinosaur fossils on exhibit? I'd love to go to one of those museums one of these days and just stand next to one of those and see just how massive they are compared to me.

Eluna Thals

No its a museum of art, so its primarily art stuff. This was unique in that it was also archaeological stuff in addition to the art such as jewelry, wall frescoes, etc. I think about 99% of the stuff there was authentic 1st century AD stuff recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as outlying communities.

The Etruscan & Greek exhibit included some stuff from 5th century BC if I remember, as well as some enlightenment-era reproductions, which Christin and I actually thought were poorer in quality than the real deal.

I've never been to either cuz I'm from a small town where the idea of a museum is "women's rights!" stamped on everything. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful, but god I want some more culture than that.... I want to see artifacts that date back farther than that and I'd love to see some artwork. I envy you guys. Must have been fun.

It's Birmingham, so its not exactly the bastion of civilization. Culture is where you find it, and according to the eye of the beholder.

Sounds like a cool museum. You would probably love some of the stuff local to me. About 20 mins away we have the foundations of the Segedunum roman fort, which was a 600-man garrison back in 250AD. Perhaps more interestingly, Segedunum is the beginning, on the east coast, of Hadrian's Wall.

lol Probably a heck of a lot more culture than Seneca Falls, NY. It bored me to the point I had to escape with my life. You can be bored to death ya know. :x

And how fast were you going down that hill? lmao

That would place it just after the Severan reforms, so yeah Hadrian's wall got a refitting around then. Pretty cool.

I intend to do the same whenever I get my massive european vacation planned. The trouble is, I have all these places I want to go in Italy & Greece in particular, but also have friends in the Ruhr valley in Germany so to do this, I would probably spend about a week around Duesseldorf & Amsterdam with maybe 2-3 days in Munich & Prague, then a frantic dash for Rome, Capri, Pompeii, Delphi, etc.

Why not have the friends come with you to some of the locations? Make it their vacation too? LOL

The nice thing about Pompeii, Capri and Rome, they are rather close. Naples is only a few hours drive from Rome, if I remember correctly. Naples is one of the most pictoresque cities I ever seen, btw. The entire city of Rome is like a museum. You can see and do a lot in that area.

Be careful when you travel though, because it can get really hot in the summer. May is the best month to travel.

My friend freelances his own mortgage firm and is a bit of a workaholic. I know he'd spare the time to hang out locally and go as far as Prague, but I'm not sure how much time he can afford to take. His wife is the same way so I don't know. I'm sure I could ask but I don't think he's as keen on it as I am.

I've looked at Roman vacation packages and they're very manageable. I can trim the fat because I don't have much interest in seeing the Vatican or any of that. I'm SPQR all the way.

I just found this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompeii:_The_Last_Day), and I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy it ^_^;

It's got a five out of five stars on Amazon, and here's an excerpt I found on YouTube:

BBC documentaries :love

Amazon has an option to buy that and Augustus together for 22-ish bucks, and since Charley developed a mancrush on Peter O'Toole after we watched Masada, I'll probably get the both of them.

Don't forget I, Claudius :love

That Pompeii video is awesome. I could recognize so much of the scenery from the exhibit :)

And yes I have a mancrush on Peter O'Toole. It's only slightly smaller than my Daniel Craig mancrush.
