My dad is using Mozilla Thunderbird as his mail client on his laptop, and it's been giving him increasingly more and more trouble. It takes 4+ minutes to load up, processes commands slowly, and freezes if left running for extended periods of time. It also will not automatically download new messages and sometimes just freezes in the midst of routine tasks like deleting old messages or moving messages between folders.

We're guessing the problem is the volume of old messages he has archived. He keeps his inbox tidy, but he has possibly a thousand old messages sorted in folders within Thunderbird. He wants to keep these messages archived for reference, as many of them are related to work.

Thunderbird may not be set up to handle this volume of messages, but is there another program that would, whether it's another email client or a separate program for archiving emails? Obviously the situation as it is with Thunderbird is unacceptable. I'd appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

If there is a database defragmentation tool for Thunderbird, use it. But of course before you do, back up the email files. Otherwise... (Gulp) in reality the best mail client for Windows IS Outlook, either 2003 or 2007. It also handles big databases a lot better and has recovery and defrag tools.

I have no love for Microsoft but on this one I'll concede they did a more than acceptible job.

It's been a while since I used it (I only use gmail nowadays), but Eudora is pretty robust. You can easily store thousands of mails and you can back up everything.
