Yes, I ranted about Alvin and the Chipmunks earlier this week. Yes, I've complained mightily about movies that seem to be meant simply to kill off the remaining parts of my childhood.

But if there's a rare movie that seems like it might be done right....

I loved the Speed Racer cartoons when I was growing up. Good grief, I even had a freaking crush on Speed. So when I first heard about a live action Speed Racer movie, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Well, the trailer is out, and it actually looks like the darn thing might actually work! With the Wachowski Brothers behind it, maybe it will be good! (The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions notwithstanding ;).) And it looks like a good cast...John Goodman as Pops, Susan Sarandon as Speed's mom, Christina Ricci as Trixie, and Matthew Fox as the legendary Racer X. And Spritle and Chim Chim are in it too!

Take a look and see what you think...part of me still doesn't know whether to laugh or cry, but overall, I'm feeling more positive about it now :).

Hmm, looks like they actually made it, well, more flashy.

Interesting, but, they're going to need a better trailer to actually make me want to see this.

LOL They almost SOUND like the cartoon. But their mouths don't move like in the cartoon. So yeah it could work.

The cartoon was contemptable crap. If it's as far away from it as possible, then I'm all for it.

I don't think it looks very good, but here's hoping I'm wrong.

Oy... agreed. I'm slightly intrigued, but I'm not a big fan of live action merged with computer animated backgrounds unless it does something really really interesting visually. (Or is so incredibly cute that it triggers that "Awww" response.)

I know I risk getting pelted with rotten eggs, icky tomatoes, and other assorted spoiled fruits and veggies for dredging this thread up, but...I saw the movie today. Not great, but not terrible either. Terrific eye candy, although the visual style will drive some people bonkers. The script is pretty weak and pedestrian, though...a truly cheeky, savvy, and smart script could have steered the movie toward becoming a classic. And one thing that critics have carped on is right...it's way too long. Two hours and 15 minutes for this kind of movie is stretching it for sure.

But it was worth a matinee price, and I can think of worse ways to spend a couple of hours in a theater. Overall, it was okay, but I think it's mostly a cult thing for devotees of the cartoon...if you didn't like the cartoon, I doubt you'll like the movie.

I have a frying pan and I'm not afraid to use it.
