I really have to express my disappointment that my cable company has not chosen to carry the NFL Network.

Sure, they have little to no worthwhile original content to offer. Sure, they've pillaged great games that most of the country would otherwise be able to enjoy. Sure, their coverage is shoddy, their commentators incompetent, and their graphics outdated eyesores.

Sure, they're demanding to be added to the basic cable package at a premium rate despite the fact they have only eight nights of meaningful content out of the year. Sure, the entire enterprise is just one more example of the NFL saying, "Screw you fans."

But is that any excuse to not pander to the NFL's ever-burgeoning greed and corporate hubris? Isn't drastically driving up the cable rates for everyone (not just football fans) a small price to pay for meaningless press conferences, training camp coverage, and, eight times a year, Chris Gumbell forgetting the rules of football during nationally televised games?

I, for one, am outraged, and, in protest, will be going to a sports bar to watch the Packers-Cowboys game and will not pay the NFL a cent for the privilege.

N.Y. Jets at Miami W (they have to win eventually)

I was going to make the same pick for the same reason - seemed they ought to be able to handle the second-worst team in the conference on their home turf - but then I remembered they lost two more running backs against the Steelers.

Man. It's hard to imagine much more going wrong for the Dolphins short of a scandal or a team tragedy.

INT!! Dallas picked off Favre as he was hit! Muahaha!

Edit: TD Dallas!! 3-13 :D

Edit: Another INT by Dallas!! Looks like the Cowboys are starting to inflict some damage on Farve, after the hit he took, he got up holding his arm. Score 10-20 with Dallas getting the ball after the INT :)

Wow. Seems like the Packers got re-focused now that they've got another quarterback in there to protect. Aaron Rodgers is giving a great effort.

I hope Favre isn't badly hurt; it'd be a shame to end his streak of starts. :(

Pretty good game. Obviously, as a Packers fans, I would have preferred the outcome to be different, but I'm more so concerned about Favre's injury. It didn't appear to be serious enough beyond keeping him out of the game tonight, but it's always a concern of course.

However, I was very impressed with how Aaron Rodgers played once Favre went out. He made enough plays to give Green Bay a fighting chance in the game, which was much much more than I expected. In the end, the big plays Dallas made were enough to win the game (Al Harris had a horrible night against TO, and Charles Woodson was definitely missed for the Packer's defense).

I look forward to (hopefully) the rematch in January.

Kale
Nov 30th, 2007, 12:46:31 AM
This game certainly makes it more likely that, if there is such a rematch, it'll be in Dallas instead of Green Bay. Which is a shame (unless you're a Dallas fan). Wouldn't it be amazing to see a rematch of the Ice Bowl with these two teams?

Ah well, it's very early to be predicting either conference championship. As secure as these teams look at #1 and #2, a lot can happen, especially if injuries become a factor. I certainly hope they don't in Favre's case - here's hoping it was just a nerve pointer and nothing more.

Not sure what other NFC team though would be good enough to challenge either. Seattle is probably the third best team in the NFC. I have little faith in Tampa. None of the potential wild card teams scare me.

It's a shootout in Philly. Matt Hasselbeck just hit Nate Burleson wide-open for a nifty catch and run to the endzone, and the Eagles responded with a very fast drive including a nifty flip from A.J. Feeley to Brian Westbrook and culminating in a dart over the middle from Feeley to the tight end for a touchdown. It's 21-17 in the second quarter.

EDIT: It's somewhat unsettling how much Andy Reid and Mike Holmgren look alike.

Kale
Dec 2nd, 2007, 02:49:44 PM
The Bills now have fourteen points.

That's right. Three field goals and a safety. :\

They've cut it close, though. Another safety will tie it.

EDIT: Lofa Tatupu is A.J. Feeley's new favorite receiver. The Eagles were unable to capitalize on a 64-yard Brian Westbrook punt return which set them up on Seattle's 14 with 1:30 left. Feeley threw straight to Tatupu on third down, the linebacker's third interception of the game, and the Seahawks win 28-24.

EDIT 2: Wow - the Bills just kicked the go-ahead field goal in Washington with 4 seconds left!

I just caught the very end of the Browns-Cardinals game in a sports bar. The Browns were mounting a last-minute drive down by six, and Derrick Anderson threw a long strike to Kellen Winslow, Jr. in the endzone at the sideline as time expired. Winslow caught the ball and was forced out of bounds by a pair of Cardinals defenders, but the ref standing right at the play called the play incomplete.

On replay, it was clear that Winslow was just inches away from having both feet in-bounds - had he not been hit, he would have come down in the endzone standing up. It should have been a ruled a touchdown, but, of course, force-outs aren't reviewable. Unfortunately, this was a rare case where a single bad call at the end of the game literally meant the wrong team won.

EDIT: Ouch, 9-6 so far. Lots of close games this week. Of course, one of my bad picks was the biggest blowout of the week, unless the Patriots top it against Baltimore.

Baltimore is up 7-3!! O_o

Boller connected with Derrick Mason on third-and-goal for a five-yard TD, threading it between two Patriots defenders. His arm was hit as he threw - maybe that's what it took to get him to throw accurately. :p

EDIT: Is anyone watching this? The Ravens are running all over the Pats defense!

24-17 Ravens after a great play-action throw by Boller on an all-out blitz by the Pats.

The age of the Pats linebacking corp is showing badly in this game. As long as Baltimore's O-Line has gotten good blocks on linemen like Wilfork and Seymour, New England gets gashed by the Raven's running game.

The Ravens defense is really jacked up tonight... you can tell they want this upset badly.

A microcosm of the Raven's season over the course of those last 90 seconds or so. They played better than New England for about 58 minutes of the game. The two minutes that they screwed up with mental mistakes cost them.

Good lord...Kornheiser had it right though. You could sense the inevitability of the Pats coming back to take the win. The Ravens just kept screwing up over and over again in the last few minutes. Untimely timeouts, 35 yards of penalties, and just an inability to get a first down when you badly need it. They played better for 55 minutes, but there's a reason why games are 60 minutes. They simply did not do the things necessary to win.

Rutabaga
Dec 4th, 2007, 07:39:53 AM
That was just heartbreaking last night. Ravens played great for 58 minutes, then fell apart. If it hadn't been for that holding call on 4th down, they would have won the bloody game. As far as I'm concerned, the Patriots didn't deserve to win :shakefist.

The Eagles almost beat them last week, and the Ravens almost beat them this week. I think the Steelers have a realistic chance of ruining the streak next week. And I'll be picking them over the Patriots, because I'm one of those people who just wants to see them get beaten at some point at this season.

If the Steelers don't do it, it would be insanely awesome if their only loss might be at the hands of the lowly Dolphins. But I doubt that will happen.

If it's not holding for the firty fifty-eight minutes...

Which was one reason the Ravens had the lead, they were mugging the Pats WR"s in the secondary and never got called on it. Welker was held pretty clearly on the INT and as a result couldn't get to the ball.

Admittedly if they aren't going to call it for the first 58 they shouldn't call it at all but it was a mistake to not call it a few times before that so it doesn't bother me too much...

Jedi Master Carr
Dec 4th, 2007, 12:37:55 PM

I heard the stories, something about a Ravens player alleging that the ref or one of the other officials repeatedly called him "boy." Even if that's true, it doesn't excuse his reaction to it, which I guess led to all those penalties.

Jedi Master Carr
Dec 5th, 2007, 12:03:16 PM
Okay I read about it. It sounds like to me he was just sore for what happened at the end. Of course it could be the refs got mad at how they were being yelled at and throwing the flag in the stands. Rolle says he didn't think they should have thrown flags for either one. He is an idiot. I mean throwing the flag in the stands is unsportsman like conduct. And arguing with the refs about the call can be depending on long you did. I saw a couple of those players in the refs faces, I don't really blame the refs for throwing flags. They had to to keep control of the game.

Rev Solomon
Dec 5th, 2007, 12:52:54 PM
Calling players derogatory names isn't keeping control of the game. It's losing control.

I don't doubt that the Ravens did something that deserved the first unsportsmanlike conduct call. And throwing the refs' flag deserves another. But the ref who called Samari Rolle "boy" deserves to be suspended. There is absolutely no excuse for refs throwing around slurs in an already-heated situation.

I don't know what the order of events was - I'd tend to guess the slur followed the rest of the penalties, since that's when Rolle would have been the most angry. If it preceded the first penalty, then shame on that ref all the more.

As it was, I think the effect of the penalties was negligible. If it had just been fifteen, the Patriots could have squibbed the kickoff and tried to pin them deep. Kicking off from the Ravens' 35, it made the most sense to just kick out the back of the end zone to avoid something crazy happening in a very unusual situation. It set up the Ravens at the 20 and guaranteed that no time ran off the clock, whereas a kickoff return could easily run ten seconds off.

Nathanial K'cansce
Dec 5th, 2007, 04:42:49 PM
..Boy really isn't a slur. Rolle is probably a good 15+ years yougner than the ref. I also heard that Rolle told the ref that he "has apparently never played a football game." The ref he told this to had played for a number of years before reffing. If I were the ref, I'd call the smart mouth kid a "boy" too. Respect your darn elders!

Jedi Master Carr
Dec 5th, 2007, 10:26:12 PM
It depends on how boy is used. Like you said Rolle is probably 20-30 years younger than the ref. My question though is when does Al Sharpton get invovled?
