View Full Version : My sister got a stupid-huge job offering

So with about a month left in her final semester in nursing school, my sister got tapped by the Childrens' Hospital of Birmingham to be a nurse in their pediatric oncology group. Apparently this is unprecedented, because nurses for this practice are never tapped directly from nursing school, and are transfers in from other departments. The review board was apparently impressed enough by her during interviews that they pulled protocol and gave her the offer. She won't be making quite the agreed-upon salary for the first year (but will have full benefits and everything else), but she'll be brought to that pay grade with her second year in. Either way, a lot more money than I'm making, that's for sure.

I'm very proud of her. She went through hell and back this semester (and still not technically done), especially with the HESE exam. She got hospitalized for some horrible migraines and they ended up doing a spinal tap on her, screwed it up, and had to do a blood patch procedure to fix their mistake. All throughout this, she was studying and doing her portions. She failed the HESE once before, and was incredibly stressed about making the grade on the second attempt. Finally it seems like she's found some sense of vindication.

I figured everybody could use a little good news story. I'm so used to bad things happening to good people that I'm on cloud nine thanks to this. Go sis.

Yay Sister!! :D

I'm on the same path as her being nurse and went through hell this semester. Not as much as her mind you, but I understand about stress and having to do all your work AND clinincals while concentrating is a bitch

btw - it's HESI ;)

I couldn't remember the acronym :)

But yeah, she's been doing clinicals at a hospital 90 minutes away from her school which is a complete crock. I cannot believe she's been able to stay sane. Her supervisor for clinicals is a bit of a slave driver as well.

As a nurse myself, I must say I'm really impressed by what has obviously been excellent work by your sister, and the job offer she received sounds like a tremendous opportunity...many congratulations to her indeed! :thumbup

Pediatric oncology can be a sad field, though...but I'm sure she knows that already. Best of luck to her, it sounds like she'll do a great job!

In the words of Christopher Eccleston, while playing a certain time-traveling cosmic hobo:

"Fantastic!" ;)

My deepest respect goes out to those who have the strength of heart to deal with what certainly must be a very heart-wrending position; the health and lives of little ones at their most vulnerable. It has to be especially difficult if she ever plans on having children of her own. Those little faces refect the faces of ones own. Yet for the same reasons it must be very rewarding as well.

I'm the dad of a toddler, so it kicks the strong, protective feelings in. I'm a sap. :D

Well, good luck to her.
