The first poster for Sweeney Todd is out. I know its about a murderous barber and there is cannibalism involved.. but...
... Johnny Depp! :eee

Isn't this supposed to be a musical?
Edit: It is a musical. Great stuff. Just saw a larger version of this poster. It's an excellent poster and I'm thrilled to hear that Alan Rickman is in it, however, it is a shame that Sacha Baron Cohen is involved.

It was a musical yes, but there have been non-musical versions.
Sacha Baron Cohen? :( sigh.

I was referring to the film specifically, I'd gone and checked and found out that Burton is actually making a musical Sweeney Todd. Gah! Now I need to see who's scoring it - I wish it were Elfman but I have a feeling it's not going to be.
As for the whole Sacha Baron Cohen thing - I just can't abide the man. He makes comedy unfunny by pretending to be doing it. It's such sneering elitist nonsense aimed for the lowest comon denominator of intellect. If you want examples, just look at the crowds he pokes fun at in his Borat film; militant feminists, conservative middle-class families, extreme right-wing gun-totting bumpkins and a bunch of tongue-speaking evangelists. Please, talk about easy targets. And the worst thing, this is mutton dressed as lamb, pretending to be sharp and ironic and pretty much claiming that if you don't laugh, you're dumb. Worst British export in a long time.
I digress. I hate his work and just wish he wasn't involved in this film or any other in which I may be interested.

Sure, he has his softballs. That is true. Then again, he also mocks plenty of people who are noticably harder targets, so I don't think he should be run out of town on a rail.
The UK has easily subjected us to worse.

This comes out this December it is by Tim Burton and stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonhma Carter, and Alan Rickman. It is a musical and it is very different seeing Depp sing. Here is the trailer
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809834155/video/4367764 It looks dark and funny and fits Tim Burton's style.

Looks cool, however I was distracted by the Cap'n Jack voice.

Depp looks/sounds like a crazy mix between Scissorhands and Sparrow.
Looks like it will be fun :)

I didn't even realize there was already a thread for this. I must have missed this one when it was posted or just forgot about. I agree Depp looks really strange in it. I know on some places the movies have been tossed around for Oscar nominations. I think it would have the best chances in the acting category, I could see Depp, Carter or Rickman scoring nominations.

Here's a picture of Depp and Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd. I have a bunch in my EW this week but I dunno if I want to scan them or not. :p

She looks great, I think her, Deep and Rickman all have chances at Oscar nominations right now. I am not sure about the movie itself or Burton. I mean it could, but it so different I am not sure.

Am I the only person who is tired of seeing Tim Burton's "pretty goth" stuff? It's getting really old, really fast.
Shame it had to happen to a great musical.

I think you are :p That's his style, and he does it great, I think. I really wanna see this flick.

So long as he isn't rehasing similar stories, I don't mind. Corpse Bride felt like a bit of a poor-mans Nightmare Before Christmas, and the less said about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the better... but with some fresh, interesting material I think he'll continue to produce fun, uniquely styled movies. Half of the fun of Tim Burton is that no one else makes movies quite like he does.

But it's not uniquely styled anymore. Even Spielberg changes styles, Tim Burton doesn't.
This just looks like it was poured out of the Tim Burton can.

Comparing Burton with Spielberg is pointless. That's like complaining that all Chuck Jones ever did was make silly cartoons instead of being more like John Ford. They are two very different story teller's with very different interests and goals.
I imagine it's more difficult for Burton to gain financial backing for films that are not "gothic" than it is for him to get green lit on something that is mysteriously kooky. And when Burton does stretch in a direction that is not "gothic" people tend to not know what to do with it. (Big Fish)
Besides, Spielberg doesn't even have a style at all unless you call the Hollywood style a style.

I loved Big Fish, and thought it was excellently done. I would love to see him do more work in a style like that, or at least a variant of it.
And, Chuck Jones also did other things than the Looney Tunes, some of them very masterful.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see how this turns out, but, so far I'm less enthused about it than I was about Corpse Bride.

I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! This looks like a return to the norm in terms of Burton's film choice but he is an auteur and would leave his mark on any film he directs no matter what. I'm not too sure how it will turn out and the only thing that puts me off is Depp's Jack Sparrow voice. I've had more of that than I can stomach.
Burton has signed up to do a live-action/performance-capture 3D animated version of Alice in Wonderland for Disney. That should be fun but I'm more excited about the development of American McGee's Alice.

Little 30 Min. behind-the-scenes preview. Rather mild spoilage. Most of us know the story basics, I gather.

Just got back from seeing it, and wow, it's a movie that only Tim Burton could have pulled off so successfully. I see many Oscar nominations in its future, most especially for Johnny Depp. He was simply spectacular!

Fantastic movie. For anyone afraid of Burton's trademark gothy-ness, there's no need to worry :)
Not to mention putting Helena Bonham-Carter with Depp made for a great pairing, IMO.
