Mm... I'm getting just about sure picking the Giants over the Skins in Washington is going to cost me. I keep forgetting the Giants have even less defense than usual these days.

So, I'm changing my pick to WAS and documenting it here so you know that's all I changed.

These are throwbacks to their unis from their first year in the league. Their colors back then were based on the colors of the Philadelphia flag, which are in turn based on the colors of the flag of Sweden.

The Pittsburgh Pirates' colors were also based on the colors of their city flag, and the Steelers still use them.

Maybe now people won't make so much fun of the Steelers throwbacks. :lol

Packers got the benefit of the tuck rule to keep a drive alive and get another TD. Favre is at 419 now, just one away from tying Marino's record.

Kale
Sep 23rd, 2007, 12:28:58 PM
Say what you want about those uniforms; the Eagles have woken up in this game. Or maybe it's just the Lions defense, which looks like Louisville's these days.

Packers are up on the Chargers 17-7 at the half. The Chargers have just looked slow and stupid so far this year. I thought firing Marty Schottenheimer was a bad idea at the time. But how does an NFL head coach take a team that went 14-2 last year and put that mess on the field?

Edit: Okay, so they've scored one more TD before the half, but even so.

Yog
Sep 23rd, 2007, 12:35:02 PM
What an unreal shootout before half time between Eagles and Lions. It must be the new uniforms.

Edit: some fun stats around half time played..

Westbrook: 102 rushing, 98 receiving, 3TDs

Curtis: 205 yards receiving, 3TDs

Favre to Jennings, 57 yd TD, #420.

And Green Bay takes the lead with 2 mins left to go.

Lots of time for San Diego to work, though.

Kurt Warner has come in for the Cardinals in Baltimore and is making things interesting - driving in Ravens territory with under three minutes, down 23-20. Can the Ravens stave off another fourth-quarter comeback drive by a backup quarterback?

Meanwhile, Green Bay has just taken a 24-21 lead over the Chargers thanks to a record-tying TD pass by Brett Favre - his 420th - and San Diego take the kickoff with 1:58 and two timeouts left. Can the Chargers drive into field goal range, or are they going to fall on their face against an NFC opponent?

The Eagles have taken a commanding 56-21 lead over the Lions. Can Detroit - nah, never mind.

EDIT: The Cardinals tie it at 23 with 1:50 left. Could head to OT if the Ravens can't drive.

Figrin D'an

The Eagles definitely took out some frustrations today. The question is, was this a fluke caused by bad defense from Detroit, or has Philly's offense put it together?

Kevin Curtis seems to have emerged as the go-to guy for McNabb.

San Diego's problem is not involving Tomlinson in the passing game. He's probably the best pass catching RB in the league, and he has been given very few opportunities make plays as a receiver. Turner's system doesn't use the RB in that roll very often, which is taking away a powerful aspect of San Diego's offense IMO. We all know what Tomlinson can do on a well-executed screen pass (they ran one against Green Bay today, and it went for a touchdown). Unless Turner starts using Tomlinson as a complete offensive weapon, and not just a between-the-tackles RB, teams will continue to stack the box with 8 defenders and force Rivers to make plays under pressure.

Kale
Sep 23rd, 2007, 03:50:09 PM
Anyone else surprised the Jaguars are leading the Broncos 20-7 right now? Or that Joey Harrington has pretty much constituted the Falcons' offense in the first half, throwing 19 of 25 for 262 yards and a TD? Where are Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood?

In other news, the Bengals defense is back from their week off, and this is actually a great game between them and the Seahawks. Lemar Marshall has just sacked Hasselbeck in the endzone for a safety, putting the score at 14-12.

Edit: Poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor Browns...

At least that means I'll probably only drop two of the late games instead of three. The Bengals pass defense folded again to give the Seahawks the lead, and then the Cincy kick returner fumbled to rob Carson Palmer of an attempt at a 1:00 comeback drive. And the Giants are leading Washington by a TD with 2:33 left. Maybe I shouldn't have switched that pick after all. :mneh

Anyway, sad day for Ohio football. But Steelers remain alone at the top of the AFC-North! :D

I started out 8-1 (Finally the Chiefs won a game). The second half games have killed me. I didn't think Denver would lose to Jacksonville and Cleveland blew it missing that FG. And I can't figure out Washington. I picked against them the first two weeks and they win now they will probably lose. And SD is a mess right now, I think the AFC west is a little more wide open, probably the winner of that division will win 10 games.

Sep 24th, 2007, 02:45:21 PM
It must suck to be a Bears fan right now. You've got this great window of opportunity to go to the Superbowl because of the pathetic NFC, but you're stuck with a loser at QB. They got there last year despite Grossman, but there's only so far you can go with a dud.

The good news is that they're only a good QB away from legitimately challenging for the SB, but that's easier said than done, isn't it?

Jedieb
Sep 24th, 2007, 08:33:05 PM
Chicago & Dallas
You can say what you want about Grossman but he wasn't playing defense yesterday. The Cowboys moved the ball all game long against the Bears D. Even in that low scoring first half the Cowboys piled up some yards. The Bears look ripe for a Superbowl hangover. I wouldn't be stunned to see the Packers win that division this year. Dallas is for REAL. The defense looks decent and the offense looks GREAT. Certainly good enough to win the NFC and represent the conference in the Superbowl. A big showdown might be looming a few weeks when the Pats go down to Dallas. Both teams could easily be undefeated. Last year the Cowboys surprised the Colts and beat them at home and I believe they were either undefeated or only had 1 loss.

The Colts
They look solid. The defense looks better than last season's regular season version so the defections don't look like they've hurt them. The Colts went 9-3 last year in games decided by less than 7 points. That's a surprising stat, most people would naturally assume that the Colts won a lot of blow outs last year. So close wins this year shouldn't be a reason for concern.

The Steelers
They're back, it's as simple as that. They were a defending Superbowl champion that had their season derailed by a freak offseason by their QB, the loss of Bettis, and the off field distractions of a lame duck coach. They haven't played any tough teams, but they still look good. Certainly good enough to split the season series against the likes of Baltimore and Cincy.

The Packers
They're 3-0 and they've done that against 3 playoff teams. That's impressive, I don't care how young they are. In the NFC this is the kind of start that can propel you into the playoffs. I think they're good enough to split their games with the Bears and with Chicago's early troubles that's enough for GB to be able to make a playoff run. I think the key for the Pack is for Favre to LISTEN to his coach and keep playing smart football. Keep throwing the ball short, take what the defense gives you and stop trying to needle the ball between 3 defenders.

The Chargers
Marty must be laughing his butt off. AJ looks like an arrogant fool right now. Here's a stat to consider and one I wasn't aware of. Last season the Chargers played only 2 playoff teams and they lost BOTH of those games (Balt. & NE). Their other loss was against the Chiefs. Is this team really that good? A new coaching staff, an inflated record, and a devastating home playoff loss could all contribute to this team being one of the biggest dissapointments of the season.

The Pats
Lord I'm going to be hating this team more than ever. They're scary good right now. They just aren't winning, they're humiliating teams. They've got some tough games on their schedule; AT Dallas, AT Indy, AT Baltimore, and a home game against Pittsburg. They're not going to go undefeated, but a 3, 2, or 1 loss season isn't out of the question. Crap, could someone please give Tom Brady a motorcycle for Christmas?

Figrin D'an

Pretty unbelievable how bad the Saints are right now. Last season is starting to look more and more like a fluke that was fueled by the emotional wave of returning to New Orleans post Katrina. Absolutely awful on defense, Brees isn't playing well at all, the offensive line can't pass block, and for some reason, they don't seem to want to give the ball to Deuce McAllister 20-25 times a game, which is a big reason why they won last year (used the running game to set up the rest of the offense).

Combined with the Bears now looking like a mess (their defense is already getting beat up, they're in trouble), it's really looking like the best two teams in the NFC right now are Dallas and Green Bay.

I'd throw in Seattle too mainly because they will win their home games which will be enough to win 10-11 games and probably the second or third seed in the playoffs. Outside those three teams I can't think of anybody unless maybe the Eagles keep playing like they did Sunday. The Titans look like a good team. I think they could make a run for the playoffs.

We shall see but the NFC has beaten the AFC in the regualar season and it hasn't mattered. I think the AFC is dominant right now like the NFC were in the 80 and early 90's.
