View Full Version : Extravagant/Stupid Purchases

A big chunk of money turned up in my bank today, and the first thing I did was order a pizza and buy myself some new shirts. I didn't need either of those things, and they weren't really what the money was for, but I bought them anyway! A couple of years back, I decided out of the blue to buy an electric buy. I am a terrible impulse buyer, really.

So, I was just wondering... what stupid stuff have you bought just because you can? Really expensive stuff, or even stuff that isn't so expensive but is of no real use - for instance, a monocle!

I've bought shirts on impulse that I wore once and haven't touched since. Beyond that, nothing comes to mind.

NCAA 2008 for Xbox 360. The Bourne Identity and Supremacy. A copy of the US Constitution and a book of Winston Churchill speeches.

does buying all of my paintball gear and then only playing paintball twice count? I have a good $300 worth of gear sitting in a closet.

Didn't really break the bank with that one, I guess.

I've spent over $1,000 on climbing gear in the past two months... Some of it I won't even get to use until spring. I just like climbing gear. It's so shiny and colorful.

I have a lot of books on my shelves that I haven't gotten around to reading. Those totally count, right? I'll probably never get around to reading them. Stupid school.

A $250 pair of "wrap-around" prescription sunglasses.

This new computer which, including parts and whatnot, cost me $850.

Video games and lots and lots of DVDs. My DVD collection is soon to hit 200, if it hasn't already.

Oh. And I was close to buying an '86 Corvette a few weekends ago. And apparently (according to my dad) a Charger (I think) is being sold around here someplace for $16K. He told me I should get it and build credit. I think he just wants to drive it. I'm tempted.

About 15,000 in cash worth of cars and rally bits last month. Going to drop about another 10K on cars by Christmas.

Last year - WRX at about 40K.

I spend my money on cars, cats and computers. The rest I just waste ^_^

I'm an impulse buyer too. I bought my laptop on an impulse buy, thats the largest purchase I've done. Mostly I buy smaller things, DVDs and video games, things like that.

The extent of my impulse buys are usually restricted to chewing gum in the checkout line.

I never impulse buy. Sometimes I'll pull the trigger a little earlier than originally planned, like in the case of my Xbox 360 ($250 shipped for the Premium package) but impulse buying pretty much never. I bought a pair of $150 prescription sunglasses, but I love them and they were worth it.

Impulse buy, hmm, probably going out to eat at a seafood joint for lunch, ordering 40$ worth of seafood, the cost of gas for driving 25 miles to reach it, one-way, just because I wanted to go there, and I had a ton of money in my account.

A $2000 paper hole puncher

Seriously that's all I'll ever do with this thing.

The most recent thing I can think of was three H.P. Lovecraft books, a game art book, and a noir art book.

At least that's a really, really nice hole puncher.

S'illy? Game art? ;)

Whut game?

I buy comics on impulse all the time. The last big thing I bought on impulse though was a 100 dollar Clone Trooper Tank (whatever the gigantic 10-wheeled one is called).

The last thing I bought on impulse was an erotic manga drawing book. I tend to spend a lot of money on books, most of which are sitting on my shelf right now. ^_^;

Mmm I once bought an iPod, and then on the bus I felt so bad about spending $150 that I got off at the next stop, walked back to the mall, and returned it.

Other than that? Maybe clothes for Rhys. He grows out of them so fast but The Children's Place is like a black hole of irresistability! It sucks you in!

Speaking of extravagance, I am shopping for Roman weapons and armor, FOR NO REASON

Ah, but one doesn't really need a reason to shop for Roman weapons and armour. That's the beauty of such things. ;)

I'm shopping for Spartan armour.

Now I need to find the body for it too -_-

If you're talking about Spartan armour from the movie 300 then... well its really just a helmet and a shield... and a loin cloth. :mneh

For drawing reference? They have a whole series of books, and I'd like to get all of them because they're good for poses (which I suck at, so it helps to have something to look at so I get the proportions right).

My mother bought me one of these when I was 14, not realising what it was. She just bought me a big pile of 'How To Draw Anime' books :lol

The last thing I bought on impulse was tortillas. I haven't opened them yet. The only thing I really buy on impulse is food, to be honest. Bigger things (i.e. electronics) I research heavily, to find a good deal.

A bronze and wood hoplon will cost you at least $300.

A body fit to use it will cost you considerably more.

I'm looking at having to lose a considerable amount of weight just to be able to fit into a set of lorica hamata, since they only size to XL. Better to do that than to try to fit into lorica segmentata though.

I can't decide whether I'd want to buy stuff for either late republic or early imperial kit. The helmet would probably be a lot cheaper as an Imperial Gallic, but the Republic stuff is off the beaten path and looks awesome. Plus I'm not sure if the Empire was using Mainz blades at the time they were wearing Imperial Gallic helmets, and I love Mainz gladii.

So why you think I like my bike so much? :)
