lol appalachian state
Holy crap that is completely unprecedented. A Div-II team has NEVER beaten a ranked Div-I team, much less the fifth ranked team in the nation - at their home field.
I really hope I can find the video of this game. One for the ages. Glad it happened to a team like Michigan :)
And in other news, my alma mater did okay too :)

Part of me laughed profusely at Michigan's fortune, but the other part of me is disgusted at how it seems to be one thing after another that makes the Big Ten look just terrible.
The Michigan loss spells the end for Lloyd Carr. They've now lost 3 games in a row going back to last season, and given up 108 points in the process. Three straight losses to Ohio State (Carr has only beaten Jim Tressel once) and three consecutive bowl game losses were hard enough for Michigan fans to swallow, but this loss is pretty much unfathomable. Carr won't be fired, but he'll be "forced to retire" at the end of the season, and I think he's pretty much lost the right to hand pick his successor.

The AppState QB said, Michigan didn't make any adjustments at all after the half. That is a sign of awful coaching. UM fired Coker for it much faster, thankfully.

You know, I would feel bad for Michigan... but Gator fans suffered terribly at the hands of disgruntled Michigan partisans for about a month last year and that's still pretty fresh in my mind. Ohio State fans weren't that mouthy, but I've never met a group of fans with a larger sense of (undeserved) entitlement than those who came from Michigan. Mind you, OSU was offensive... but Michigan fans were THE worst.
I took much satisfaction in USC's drubbing of Michigan earlier this year and I took just as much satisfaction with this loss to Appy State.
It's amazing how one game can make someone, who never had any problems with the Big 10 and used to root for Ohio State, completely loathe an entire conference.

I am surprised nobody started this thread yet. The big news this weekend was Applachian State beating #5 Michigan. That was an amazing victory by that Div !AA school. It is embarassing for Michigan who fell out of the top 21 with that loss. (that is a 25 spot drop). I was happy Clemson beat Florida State yesterday. That was a big win for them and got them ranked today.

It's too early to get much of a read on anything. The Appalachian State game is obviously the biggest upset I've ever seen. The Fiesta Bowl in January was probaby more "important" for the litttle guys out there, but the Mountaineers win is BY far the bigger upset. They aren't even in the same division for crying out loud.
(Oh yeah, our new coach's 1st game was a 79-10 beat down....let's hope 69 point losses aren't a trend or I'll be looking forward to basketball season even more than normal)

It was the biggest upset I have seen too. I guess you could argue about some of the ones in the early days of college football but not too many left who saw those games live.

It's probably the biggest upset since Notre Dame picked apart Army in 1913 via the passing game.

Score at halftime: Oregon 34, Michigan 7
Egads, I sure hope Penn State rolls over Michigan this year, because Michigan has been their nemesis the past few seasons.

So, hypothetically speaking, say Michigan does get steamrolled by Oregon and by many other subsequent opponents. Does this diminish App States accomplishments and further illustrate why preseason rankings are dumb?
Jedi Master Carr
Sep 8th, 2007, 04:08:57 PM
I think it shows how stupid preseason rankings are. I don't think it diminshes what Applachian State did. I mean that was still a huge upset. I also think Michigan is just falling apart after that loss. They probably won't even make a bowl game this year with the way they are playing. Also Oklahomha might be a team to watch out for after beating Miami 51-13. While Miami is down right now, beating them by almost 40 points is still pretty impressive.

Yeah you can't diminish what Appalachian State did. I mean is OU's throbbing of UNT last week, diminished by their throbbing of Miami today? No.
I think the Michigan coach is now toast by the way.

Appalachian State's accomplishment was amazing last week, but they only won by one point. This week Oregon came in and cleaned the Big House from top to bottom. :dance

Penn State ices away a 31-10 victory over Notre Dame and their underage quarterback, and now the 0-2 Irish will travel to Ann Arbor to face the 0-2 Wolverines. So now the question becomes, which team sinks still lower?
Honestly, I think Michigan can beat Notre Dame. The Irish do not have the speed to stretch the Michigan defense the way Appalachian and OU did, and Jimmy Clausen could manage next to nothing at QB until Penn State already had the game in the bag. And if Michael Hart can stay healthy, he should be able to wear down Notre Dame's defense just like Austin Scott did for Penn State.
Of course, Chad Henne is listed as doubtful, which means it'll probably be Mallet again at QB for Michigan. Yeah, Lloyd Carr will DEFINITELY be keeping it on the ground as much as possible.

Sep 8th, 2007, 08:08:51 PM
If Michigan struggles against Notre Dame next week, or worse, somehow manages to lose to a rebuilding Irish team, the Wolverines could actually be looking at a losing season for the first time in about 40 years.
The crappy part is that I'm sure my alma mater (Purdue) will still manage to lose in the Big House this year.

Auburn's kicker line drives a 40 yarder. USF is on offense. We need to get the ball in the endzone. Our kicker is erratic. He's already missed a ton of FG's today.

Wisconsin just got a huge running play from their quarterback to maybe save the game against UNLV. They trailed for most of the night.
I think if these first 2 weeks of the season have taught us anything, it's that there need to be no polls of any kind until about mid October.

USF should get ranked after that. Actually the Big East looks pretty strong this year, you have WVU and Louisville obviouslly but then you have USF and Cincinnati looks like it could have a good team with the way they demolished Oregon State, Thursday night. I also can't think Georgia can't be any good if they lose to South Carolina. Now I have to listen to a SC fan tell me they are going to win the National title (I kid you not).

I don't know about a National title, but Spurrier will have South Carolina challenge for the SEC East in the next year or two.

I will give them that. But this guy I know has been irrating me saying they are going all the way this year. I will be glad when in two weeks they play at LSU who should man handle them. Right now, I think LSU is probably the best team in the country.

Right now, I think LSU is probably the best team in the country.
Hard to argue with that at the point. But we really don't know how good any of these teams are yet. Not sure how strong the conferences are versus each other either.
Currently it looks like the SEC looks down. The Big 10 looks down. The Big East and Pac-10 look like their stock is up.
Jedi Master Carr
Sep 8th, 2007, 11:26:49 PM
I mainly said that based on tonight for LSU. I didn't think they blow away Va Tech like that. I guess we will see what they do from here out. Have to see what USC does against Oregon and Cal to see how good they are.
CMJ
Sep 8th, 2007, 11:32:41 PM
Even though I think USC might be the best team...I don't see them going undefeated. All their toughest games except for UCLA are on the road.
Nebraska
California
Oregon
Arizona State(who looks much improved)
Even Notre Dame....rivalry games often go crazy ways.
ALL of those are on the road. I think it's WVU vs LSU at this point. But it's a looooooooooooooooooooong way to go.

At this point, I think you could draw straws between USC, LSU, Oklahoma and Florida for the #1 ranking. Things will sort themselves out a bit more with conference play starting up in earnest.
That Alabama/Arkansas game was crazy. John Parker Wilson really established himself as a playmaking QB though. Bama's final 2 minute drive was impressive.
Purdue is 3-0, with a trip to Minnesota coming up next weekend, followed by a home date with Notre Dame before Ohio State comes to town. Barring a horrific collapse, they should be 5-0 when the face off with the Buckeyes. If they can find a way to win that game, they could be a legit threat to win the Big Ten.

I'm generally skeptical of our QB talent, but I've been tooting this horn ever since last year. This kid has talent like we haven't seen in a while.
As long as he doesn't have Brodie Croyle's glass jaw, he'll do well.

LSU dominated SC for 3 quarters. I don't think the game was as close as the score indicated. LSU did play a little too loose there in the 4 quarter. Biggest two upsets today were Michigan over Penn state and Syracuse over Louisville. Louisville's defense looks horrible.

Someone needs to tell ESPN that Lou Holtz's "expert analysis" isn't amusing anymore. It was mildly funny his first year in the studio, now it's just flat annoying and embarrassing. The other former players/coaches on their college football crew are at least capable of being somewhat objective when looking at their former school's match-ups and performances. They need to starting holding Holtz to the same standard.

Asking the same company that hired Lee Corso to do announcing work for this much mercy wouldn't make any sense though.
Figrin D'an
Sep 22nd, 2007, 07:55:21 PM
Corso is a goofball, and his analysis isn't anywhere near the level of Herbstreit or May, but at least he isn't a total homer that tries to pass off his zeal as legitimate assessment of the teams in a given game.
I don't hate the guy... I think Lou Holtz has been a darn good head coach over the years. He's just not cut out for doing a studio job if he's going to keep towing the South Carolina and Notre Dame lines every week.

Bleh, I was disgusted with Penn State's play today, which basically amounted to run, run, incomplete pass for most of the game. It seemed the coaching staff didn't gameplan this match-up any differently from the game against Notre Dame. Penn State's WRs have the speed to stretch Michigan out and open room for the running game. They could at least have tried some screens or end-arounds to give them more things to cover. But, no, pretty much all Michigan had to do all game was stuff the middle.
Doesn't help that PSU had two stupid, stupid fumbles, one of which led to a Michigan TD and the other of which took away a scoring opportunity.
Also bummed that Texas Tech lost a shootout to Oklahoma State. Really tough way to lose, too, with Michael Crabtree dropping the winning TD in the endzone on 4th down. Crabtree is an electrifying player. As a freshman WR, he has over 200 receiving yards in each of his last two games and leads the NCAA in TD receptions. If he stays along this track, and if TTU can get some more media coverage, he could be the closest TTU has ever come to having a Heisman candidate.

I don't blame you. I'm not sure why 'Bama didn't see that coming on first down... with Georgia's kicking game so strong, it made sense for them to take a shot at the end zone right away on their possession.
USC was impressive again, which they probably needed a bit, as their defeat of Nebraska in Lincoln looks a little less impressive given that the Huskers barely beat Ball State at home today.
LSU looked good again. Florida struggled but won on the road. When those two meet in a couple weeks, it should be a great game.
Stanford is giving Oregon a lot of problems at the moment.
How bad is Louisville's defense if they give up 38 points to Syracuse?
Purdue is going to beat Minnesota in the Metrodome tonight, but the defense is giving up too many big plays and not tackling well. I'm not really concerned about it for next week against Notre Dame, but it has to get better by the time Ohio State comes town in two weeks.

My Bulls handled their first game as a ranked team pretty well today. We're taking on big bad West Va next weekend at the New Sombrero. We'll probably get smoked, but we're doing great for a young program. We stunned them in Morgantown last year so we won't be sneaking up on them this year, but I can still hope for another upset. :cool

Louisville gave up like 30 some points to Middle Tennessee State a few weeks back and that kind of gave a hint of their defensive problems. Their QB threw threw for 555 yards that shows how bad their defense is.

I also went to the UCLA game this evening. The Bruins looked pretty good in beating Washington - they should eventually climb back into the top 25.
My alma mater UNT lost a heartbreaker 30-20(closer than the 10 point margin indicates as FAU got a late score). We're still going thu growing pains with the new coach. But watch out for us in another year or so.. :)

Washington isn't that bad. They're young at key positions, so they're prone to some mistakes, but Jake Locker is going to be a monster in the coming seasons. I can't really see LSU moving up to #1, especially considering they struggled for a half against Tulane before finally getting it together. USC will win a conference road game against an improving team, there's no reason to drop them because of that.
The teams that will really benefit from all of these upsets are Ohio State and Wisconsin, whom will probably be #4 and #5 respectively when the new polls come out.

Allso USC didn't look that good at all. Washington is an awful team. To have so much trouble with them is embarassing. I think LSU could move up to #1 or at least steal some votes from USC.

Well I think LSU will get some more #1 votes to get closer. I don't think they will pass USC until next weekend if they beat Florida.

South Florida controls their own destiny in the Big East now. How huge would it be if they were to win that conference and get a BCS bid? (I know, a long way to go yet, but it's fun to think about it)
Kentucky could be the second best team in the SEC this year. We'll find out in the coming weeks.
Purdue cracks the Top 25, but they have a big showdown with Ohio State in West Lafayette this coming Saturday, then travel to Michigan the following week. Things start to get difficult now, so we'll see how they handle the meat of their schedule.

My wife showed me the rankings today and I almost passed out. I was expecting us to be just outside the top 10 but all the upsets this weekend just pushed us right up the rankings. That #6 is just too good to be true. Here's the rest of our schedule:
at Florida Atlantic
UCF
at Rutgers (ESPN)
at Connecticut
Cincinnati
at Syracuse
Louisville
at Pittsburgh
Like Fig said, we're in control of our own destiny. The Big East and a BCS bid our within our grasp. We've already accomplished so much that I don't want to get greedy. I'd be happy with 2 losses after this start because it's been such a fun ride so far.

The key game for South Florida will be at Rutgers. Both Louisville and West Virgina now have a conference loss, but Rutgers still does not (their one loss being to Maryland from the ACC). If the Bulls can go into Jersey and shut down Ray Rice the same way they stopped Steve Slaton and Pat White, they'll be on their way. The trap game for them will be against Cincinnati.

Still hard to believe that USC lost to Stanford... at home. This will either be the biggest wakeup that USC has had in the Pete Carroll era, or it portends disaster for the Trojans.
Purdue played like garbage. They didn't even score until the game was almost over. This is going to be like 2004 all over again... 5-0, lose to a big time opponent in disastrous fashion, then fold up and lose about 4 more time to teams they should beat.

I'd say Ohio State and South Florida have been the most impressive, but even they have their flaws. I'm not going to be surprised one bit if, by the time December is here, we're still looking at LSU, Oklahoma and Cal fighting for a spot in the title game.

The Hokies have looked a lot better in recent weeks. People still have that blowout loss at LSU in their mind when they look at Virginia Tech, it's not the same team now. They actually have decent quarterback play now with Tyrod Taylor, and the defense is playing much, much better. They will pose a solid change for BC. Clemson is, as usual, a Jekyl and Hide team that, if they show up, can beat anyone. I wouldn't hand a title game spot, or even the ACC, to BC just yet.
Look at the upsets that have happened, and that keep happening every week. Colorado tops Oklahoma, Stanford beats USC, Auburn beats Florida in the Swamp, Kentucky beats LSU, Oregon State wins at Cal, Illinois beats Wisconsin then loses to Iowa, Michigan's woes early in the season... this has been one of the most unpredictable seasons in recent memory. No one is dominant, no one is untouchable. Teams that look like world beaters one week are humbled by supposed lesser competition the next.
There's no point in predicting anything anymore this season. It's impossible to tell which teams are going to handle the prosperity of being a Top 5 program, because no one thus far seems to want to stay there for very long.

2. Ohio State - Great defense
3. Boston College - they just win
4. LSU - so much talent
5. Oklahoma - always look great...until they don't... :lol
6. Arizona State - REALLY underrated right now
7. South Carolina - Only loss to LSU, and they play'd them tough in Baton Rouge
8. California - I almost give them a pass on today because they played their backup QB. Should they win the next 2 they'll shoot back up
9. Oregon - Only loss to Cal in a game that coulda gone either way
10. Kentucky - What a win today
Also wanted to fit West Virginia on the list. I won't put USC back on my top 10 until they can win one of their big road tests.
Obviously, I'm not a voter.

Ugh, that was just gut wrenching. We EASILY could have won that game. Injuries, stupid penalties, horrible special teams gaffes, and bad play calling doomed us. Even with all of that we still had the ball inside the Rutgers 50 TWICE in the last 5 minutes of the game while only down by 3 but we still couldn't get in FG range to give us a chance to push the game to overtime. Well, we've still got a shot at the Big East and like Court said, the Orange Bowl.

That was an amazing ending last night. Throughout my building Tech fans are still stunned. The teacher next door to me was at the game and hates Tech so he's in a particulary good mood. I was hoping Tech would knock off BC and provide USF with a slot to slide up. My dream scenario would be for us to have played VA Tech in a BCS Bowl. The trash talking I would have unleashed around here would have been legendary.

Several upsets, Uconn beat S Florida hurting their chances at the Big East Title. Although UConn has the edge now which is shocking to see a Baseball power on top in Football. South Carolina loses to Tennessee. And inconsistent Kentucky getting beat by Ole Miss. All the big teams pretty much won, although Arizona State is in a close game with Cal.

This is why most of the people who vote in these polls are idiots, or are simply too ignorant to be allowed to vote.
Two essentially equal teams in same division of the SEC, Tennessee wins a close game in the head-to-head matchup yesterday, yet South Carolina is ranking a spot ahead of them in the rankings that come out a day later.
That Kansas/Missouri game at the end of the season is suddenly becoming an extremely important game.
Boston College was lucky on Thursday. Matt Ryan was great those last two drives, but still, it took a boneheaded mistake by Virginia Tech on the onside kick to even give BC a chance to win. I think their days as an undefeated are numbered, and it'll knock them out of the national title game.
I still think West Virginia has a great shot to get back into the title picture, based on their schedule and whom the teams ranked in front of them have yet to play.

Well only Clemson can beat BC at this point. Miami, Maryland and Florida State are all too inept to even stay in a game with them. Clemson can beat them if the right Tiger team show up. I think West Virgina needs a lot of help to get back in it. They need BC, ASU and Oregon all to lose. LSU would have to lose too but they won't play another tough team until the title game. The Problem for WV is Oklahoma play an easy schedule and would probably only get a tough game in the their title game. I just think they need too much help right now but who knows.

Some great games this Saturday. Navy/Notre Dame - even though it didn't mean anything was just a fantastic contest. Texas cotinues to break OSU's heart in excrutiating fashion.
Michigan likewise finds ways to beat the Spartans. The Wolverines may be the most impressive story this year with the way they've salvaged their season.
If I goto Vegas, I'm bringing Les Miles. LSU has gotten so many breaks this year it's amazing. BC didn't get breaks and lost.
Kansas is for real. The way their schedule sets up I think they'd jump 1 loss teams if they win out. They'd have to beat a Top 10 Mizzou THEN a top 5 Oklahoma in the Big XII Championship game.

Completely agree. If they beat Missouri and then Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game, they'll be in New Orleans. Granted, I don't think it will happen, but the schedule strength would be there if it were to come to pass.

Another one bites the dust. Only two unbeatens left. To me it looks like the field is set for a Oregon-LSU title game unless Kansas can run the table. If either of the above two falter I think Oklahoma would take their place. Missouri has a chance too if they can run the table and hope either LSU or Oregon lose. West Virginia has the slimest chance because they need 4 of the above teams to lose and I don't see that happening especially since three of them are playing each other in the next couple of weeks.

So, it's looking like LSU will be #1, Oregon #2.
Let's say LSU and Oregon both win out (very possible). Let's also say that Kansas is for real, and wins it's last three games against Iowa State, Missouri and Oklahoma (Big 12 title game). If the Jayhawks finish undefeated, do they jump over Oregon? Or, let's say Oklahoma runs the table and beats either Missouri or Kansas (both Top 10 teams) in the Big 12 title game. Do they then jump into one of those top 2 spots?
We could end up with some major controversy once again, especially if Kansas were to somehow win out and not get into the National Title game. Lots of football yet to be played of course, but it could very well happen.

Tennessee and UK now heading into the 4th overtime. This has been crazy!
Tennessee's 2OT try ended with an interception. UK's try ended with a blocked FG which Tennessee had a shot at returning.
In 3OT, UK scored the TD but, on the 2PC, threw a pick. But the Tennessee defender fumbled the ball BACK into the endzone, and another Tennessee defender barely knocked it out of bounds just beyond the pylon to make it no good instead of a one-point safety. Then Tennessee scored a TD and was held out of the endzone on the 2PC, and the running back hurled the ball away in frustration, drawing a (strange) unsportsmanlike conduct call.
So Tennessee started 4OT on their own 40 and got it all on the first play!
Aw, Kentucky failed to make the tying 2PC at the end of 4OT - Andre Woodson tried to scramble, but his blockers got in his way and he was dragged down from behind. An incredible game.

Apparently it's really, really bad to be the #2 team against an unranked opponent. West Virginia just went down against Pitt, 13-9. Pat White was knocked out of the game early with a dislocated thumb, and Pitt has played exceptional defense. On top of that, the Mountaineers fumbled the ball away four times and missed two field goals. A very shocking loss for West Virginia against their bitter rivals.
There was some really terrible officiating in this game. It cut both ways at times - a couple of phantom personal fouls that set up scores for each team - but toward the end, the officials really screwed Pitt. A bad holding call erased a touchdown that would have given Pitt a 17-7 lead, and another bad holding call took back a third down conversion, allowing West Virginia back on the field for one final drive. Both penalties were called on perfectly legitimate blocks - I almost have to wonder if the refs were looking for ways to keep WVU in the game at that point. If WVU had won, those penalties would be the story of the game. Way to go, refs.
EDIT: Oklahoma is up 28-17 over Mizzou in the 4th, and they've just earned another 1st and goal. Looks like another #1 is going down.

Except that Hawaii is losing to Washington 21-0 right now.
West Virginia is going to be the biggest choke story in a season of choke stories. They had lowly Pittsburgh, at home, were already ranked #2 and just had to win, no matter how ugly, to ensure a spot in the BCS title game. Pat White gets hurt (again), Steve Slaton disappears (again), and the Mountaineers lose. Pretty much sums up the season.
Ohio State is in, the question will be who they play. At this point... I'm thinking it's going to be LSU, or maybe even Oklahoma.

Dec 8th, 2007, 11:26:25 PM
I don't think McFadden playing for Arkansas had anything to do with it. I think it's simply that Tebow had a stronger and more consistent season. The guy set the SEC conference record for rushing TDs... and he's a quarterback. Think about that, with all of the great RBs that have come out of the SEC. Now, throw on top of that over 3000 passing yards and 29 passing TDs with only 6 INTs. Tebow was pretty dominant this season, and even in the games that Florida lost, he wasn't really shut down at all.
McFadden is the better NFL prospect, to be sure. He's a terrific talent that will probably be the 1st or 2nd pick in draft next April. But, when choosing "the most outstanding college football player" for 2007, I think Tebow was the better choice (and honestly, by that definition, I probably would have put Colt Brennan second rather than McFadden).

Looks like Michigan has hired Rich Rodriguez as their new head coach.
Have to say I'm a little surprised that he was convinced to leave West Virginia considering that just last season he turned down Alabama to stay with the Mountaineers.
He won't have the athletes to run his system for probably 2-3 seasons, so the transition period will be interesting.

Don't be. I'm honestly half hoping they lose, so that the athletic director and others in positions of influence wake up and tell Tiller that he needs to make some major changes. There is an amazing lack of mental toughness in the entire program, and it has a lot of fans and alumni, like me, pretty irritated.

Definitely! Missouri vs Arkansas should be a great matchup. Plus the Cotton Bowl is one of the oldest bowl games...and the game itself is soon to be moved away from its longtime home at the Cotton Bowl(Stadium) to the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
I understand why they're doing it....but it's a damn shame. So yeah.....experience some history. For generations the CB was one of the Big four games until the mid 90's when the Fiesta replaced it.

As much as I don't like Michigan, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Lloyd Carr, and I admit it was good to see him go out a winner after such a tumultuous season. For all of Florida's much touted speed, Michigan matched it, and even beat Florida at their own game much of the day.

The big BCS games sure haven't lived up to being good games. Really though they should have put Georgia in the Rose Bowl and pared them together (that would have been a good game) and then put Illinois in the Sugar, Hawaii would have been able to play with them.
Figrin D'an

Illinois shouldn't have been in the BCS to begin with. It should have been Missouri if not for that incredibly stupid rule about no more than 2 bids per conference (the same rule that screwed Wisconsin last year).

Well, not that many people here care about this, but it appears that my alma mater, Purdue, is ready to announce that Joe Tiller will be retiring at the end of next season, and that his former assistant (and current head coach at Eastern Kentucky) Danny Hope will be rejoining the staff for the 2008 season as an assistant and will take over as head coach in 2009.
There's a lot of mixed opinions and rumor going around about whether or not this "retirement" is being forced or is voluntary. Many alumni think that, while Tiller rejuvenated the program when he arrived in 1997, progress in recruiting and becoming more competitive in the conference has become stagnant over the last 4-5 years. I guess they have a point... I think Purdue has significantly underachieved in recently. Still, it's not going to be easy to see the guy who brought the football program back from the dead leave under what could be less than amicable circumstances.
It's obvious that the AD is hoping for the same type of smooth transition that was done with Gene Keady to Matt Painter for the basketball program a couple of years ago. I just hope it works out as well.
CMJ
Jan 9th, 2008, 08:28:53 PM
I remember what Purdue was like before Tiller. Hard to imagine him being ousted.
