Kat Kariena

Shining black boots were not an uncommon sight on the pilots console in the StarChaser. Even now the woman who wore the boots was watching the computers with half open eyes listening to the barrage of mutterings and curses coming from the galley just behind the cockpit as the ship sped through hyperspace. Opening one eye the brown haired woman glanced down the short hallway and decided it was probably a good idea to shut and lock the door, just for good measure, hitting the button to do so with the heel of her leatherclad foot.
"Didn't I tell you to pick up that Ale last port?" came a yell from the blonde on the other side of the door preceded, punctuated, and followed by cursing the entire time.
"If you wanted it you should have bought it!" the brunette yelled back, yawning and stretching her arms. She had been sitting there all morning, making sure everything worked reasonably well, her long dark brown hair pulled behind her head and out of her face, falling down her back from there.
Bangs came on the cold metal bulkhead, echos from the woman on the other side of the door banging. "Damnit, Kat, let me in!"
"In a few hours, I'm taking a nap!," Kat yelled back, a laugh in her voice. Cira McKie and Kat Kariena were polar opposites in appearance and personality. Cira had long blonde hair that fell down to her waist, piercing green eyes, and a fiery temper when tested, while Kat had long brown hair pulled back, brown eyes, and tended to be somewhat cooler when things didn't go her way... Neither woman would have been desireable to be up against in a fight.
It was a final resounding clang and barrage of curses that broke Kat out of her musings of the diffrences in personality between them. Perhaps that was what made them so close in the first place. "What is it now, Cira?" she yelled through the locked door.
"We've got a problem!" came the answer as the whole ship suddenly shook before falling out of hyperspace. The hyperdrive shutting down, followed by almost everything else.
"No kidding!" the brunette yelled, pushing the door open, grabbing her toolbelt as she ran into the engine room. Of the two of them, Cira was the better pilot, Kat the better mechanic. Pulling up the deck plating, Kat crawled into the belly of the ship, going to work while Cira tried to find a place to land, if Kat could get propulsion back. "Come on," she muttered, "Work damn you," cursing at the ship, not like it would help, but it momentarily brought Kat a small comfort as she banged at the piece of machinery with her hydrospanner.
To late.
The entire ship shook as if it had hit atmosphere, alarm bells going off in Kat's mind. Crawling back out as fast as she could, she popped her head back out. "Cira! What's going on?"
"What does it look like?!" the blonde woman yelled back, frustration in her voice. "We're crashing!"
****
Kat woke up again with a start, a cold sweat pouring down her face, hair soaked from the salty liquid that seeped out of her skin. It was that dream again. Always the same dream, always ending with a crash or being shot out of the sky. Who was that blonde again? The name was right on the tip of her tongue, but the dream was already fading into the back of her mind, the name that she could taste fading into the deapths of her mind beyond her reach and recolection.
Standing, she stretched and brushed her fingers through her long brown hair, her chocolate eyes scanning the WindRunner for any anomolies that might have found their way inside in the middle of the night before she ventured out to find food, black boots clanking on the deck plating. There was a local cantina nearby, while the food might taste odd, it was at least edible... usually anyway.
