New Releases
Evan Almighty

Newly elected to Congress, the polished, preening newscaster, Evan Baxter, is the next one anointed by God to accomplish a holy mission--walking in the footsteps of Bruce Almighty. Evan leaves Buffalo behind and shepherds his family to suburban northern Virginia. Once there, his life gets turned upside-down when God appears and mysteriously commands him to build an ark. But his befuddled family just can't decide whether Evan is having an extraordinary mid-life crisis or is truly onto something of Biblical proportions.

1408- Stephen King based story.
Renowned horror novelist Mike Enslin believes only in what he can see with his own two eyes. But after a string of best-sellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world, he has no real proof of life--afterlife. But Enslin's phantom-free run of long and lonely nights is about to change forever when he checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel for his latest project, "Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms." Defying the warnings of the hotel manager, the author is the first person in years to stay in the reputedly haunted room. Another best-seller may be imminent, but first he must go from skeptic to true believer--and ultimately survive the night.

I am not going to bother with A Mighty heart. I don't think it will be in enough theaters to make the top 5.

It's early, but Bruce Almighty is sitting at 27% rotten tomatoes score right now. Does not look promising. It's been a disappointing year for sequels so far.

You mean Evan Almighty :p Actually Evan Almighty I think will be the worse of the sequels. I think this one will be bombs away.

Yeah, I mean Evan Almighty.

It was not that big of a franchise in the first place, so if it flops, it really flops, heh

Jedi Master Carr
Jun 20th, 2007, 09:29:16 PM
Well the minute Carrey said no the Franchise took a hit. He made the first film work. I don't understand how it cost 170 million to make. I heard one review say it has the worse CGI of any film this year. So what did they blow that money on?

Probably all the animals.

Probably all the animals.

Still 170 million is a lot for animals especially when they don't look real from what I read in the reviews. It sounds like they wasted a lot of money or something. It is probably something like Waterworld which went way over budget because of a lot different things. Also I am having a tough time with this weekend. I am not sure if I should let the reviews influence my picks or not. Even is getting trounced probably the worse reviews of the summer so far and as bad as Poseidon did last summer. 1408 on the other hand is getting the best reviews of the new films. So could it possibly score an upset?

I think you are underestimating 1408. It is getting great reviews and is having really good buzz so far. Also why did Paramount release A Mighty Heart in June? It seems more like a fall film and I think they are really stupid releasing it now. I bet it bombs and gets no Oscar nominations because of that move.

Okay this is my guess right now, might change it later
1 Evan Almighty 32.67

3 1408 20.77
4 Oceans 13 11.65
5 Knocked Up 10.11

I go out on a limb with 1408 but I love me my John Cusack even if I'm too much of a chicken to actually watch this movie. ;)

Even Almighty is tanking somewhat, should probably have mid 30M range over the weekend, below studio expectations. 1408 should have close to 20M. Very nasty drop for Fantastic 4. Knocked Up continues to hold well.

*rubs hands together* perrrrrfect

Well, some of those movies need to make a little more money, but I think I have the order down. :D

Jedi Master Carr
Jun 23rd, 2007, 12:43:35 PM
You should have the order down unless the F4 does better Saturday. 1408 is going to be around 19-20 and there are three of us that pinned it around that so it will be nailbitting to see who wins that one. Evan Almighty will probably do 34-38. I think with that low of an opening it will not make 100.

You are right, the horrible WOM will make sure of that. Which is sad, considering it's like the most expensive comedy EVER. I wonder what Universal was thinking. For starters, it does not have Jim Carrey in it, which pretty much guaranteed it would do worse than the first.

Oh, and Even Almighty got a 20% RT score now, haha. What a turkey.

The summer so far can be summarised like this: Lots of hype, frontloaded traffic and no legs for the big movies. Sequels have been disappointing.

Maybe Harry Potter, Transformers and Ratatouille will save the summer. At least one can hope.

Well critics are loving Ratatouille so I think quality wise that one will be great. I think the quality for Potter will be there much like it was for the last two films. I doubt Transformers will get lucky from the critics, although it probably won't matter in terms of box office. We also have Bourne Ultimatium and Rush Hour 3 left so I think Box office wise this summer will be fine, but it is more that the summer movies so far have underperformed.

Have you seen the trailer for Rush Hour 3? Chris Tucker put on like 100 pounds, he looks so bloated. :x

I haven't seen the trailer yet, so I haven't seen that. I actually haven't seen Chris Tucker in much since Rush Hour 2.
