I generally enjoy international football, but don't get to watch nearly enough. Wish coverage in teh states were better, but part of the reason is that I haven't had cable in years. I only became a fan of the sport during the 2002 World Cup.

In other news, Real Madrid of Spain wins the spanish league, taking the title away from barcelona FC, very intense stuff!

In the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Mexico beats Costa Rica 1-0 and Guadaloupe beats Honduras 2-1 to book tickets to the semifinals.

The USA defeated Canada 2-1 in the north America Gold Cup, but I have to say Canada was robbed by being stripped of a perfectly valid goal at the last minute.

Mexico beat Gudaloupe 1-0, so the final will be between USA and MExico, a regional classic this sunday.

What is the difference between Italian Serie A and B or German Bundesliga 1 and 2? Like different conferences?

Serie A in Italy is the top flight of football competition, there are so many different cities with their teams that you have to have different levels, there are 18 teams in Serie A and 22 in B, I think, who all play home and away matches versus each other.

For example, let's say my hometown of Bari in Italy has a team (which they do) but then the neighbor city has three teams and so on, they all compete back and forth in Serie C2 (lowest league) and the ones that finish in the top three are promoted to C1, the ones who finish top three in C1 get promoted to Serie B and the ones who finish in the top three go to Serie A, the best of Italian football.

It works opposite when a team finishes within the bottom three, then they are relegated to the corresponding lower division. It works exactly the same way with the Bundesligas in Germany, the English Premiership in England, the Primera Liga in Spain and the rest of Europe.

Those are the top four divisions in the world and where most legends are born, the ones in each divison who finish in the top four every year go to the European Champions League, which is a tournament between the champions every year, adding top first or top two from the other little countries.

The current champions from those leagues are Inter Milan in Italy, Manchester United in England, Real Madrid in Spain and Stuttgart in Germany, when the time for international tournaments like the Eurocup or the World Cup comes, the federations choose the best players from their respective divisions and form a dream team to compete.




And what does the initials stand for before or after a team name? Such as AC Milan?

Usually in all languages they stand for "Football Club", "Sporting Association", "Football Association" and when you see different letters it's just variations in the languages of the respective country.

In AC Milan's case, stands for Associazione Calcio Milan, which means Football Association of Milan.

Group stage for U-20 World Cup in Canada 2007

The 24 participating teams were distributed between six groups of four teams each, according to a draw held on March 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_3), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007). The groups are contested on a league system, where each team plays one time against the other teams in the same group, for a total of six matches per group. Each group winner and runner-up teams, as well as the best four third-placed teams, qualify for the first round of the knockout stage (round of 16).

FRANCESCO TOTTI RETIRES



ROME, July 20 (Reuters) - AS Roma striker Francesco Totti announced his retirement from international football on Friday.
Totti, who made 58 appearances for Italy scoring nine goals, had not played for the national team since they won the World Cup last July after asking to take an extended break.


He has now decided to quit the Azzurri completely.
"The word finished is ugly but I have taken this decision to end the chapter with the national team for various physical reasons and not technical," the 30-year-old told a news conference.


"I have weighed up for a year after the World Cup what to do and I have decided to finish with the national team in order not to create problems for the Azzurri staff. I am sorry, but health is the most important thing."


Totti broke his ankle last year and was rushed back for the World Cup in Germany. He was expected to have to undergo another operation during this close-season to remove a plate put in to help the ankle but doctors said recently it was not needed.


One of the most gifted players in the world, Totti has never fully achieved his potential at international level despite his World Cup winners' medal and a runners-up medal from Euro 2000.


He was famously sent off when Italy were eliminated by hosts South Korea in the 2002 World Cup and was banned during Euro 2004 after being caught spitting at Denmark's Christian Poulsen.


The one-club man, idolised by Roma supporters since making his debut aged 16, was arguably in the form of his life last season even with the plate in his ankle. He said his break from the national team was a factor behind his performances.


He was Serie A's top scorer with 26 goals and earned the European Golden Boot as Roma finished second in the league behind Inter Milan and won the Italian Cup.
Italy stuttered without him in their first two Euro 2008 qualifiers but results have since picked up and they lie second in Group B with leaders France visiting Milan on Sept. 8.


"Sincere sorrow, but also a great respect for the reasons that are behind his choice," Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) President Giancarlo Abete said in a statement. "When a player decides to leave the blue shirt it is never good news."


Italian media had speculated that Totti, devoted to his TV presenter wife and two children, wanted to play for Italy on a part-time basis but that coach Roberto Donadoni and FIGC bosses were against the idea.

LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Manchester United have signed a gifted nine-year-old after his grandfather sent the Premier League champions a DVD showcasing the boy's talents which has become a YouTube sensation.

Rhain Davis, who was born in England but has lived in Australia since the age of four, was hailed by the British press on Thursday as the next Wayne Rooney after the United striker.

The boy's dribbling and goalscoring prowess for an Under-10 side in Brisbane, Australia, feature in a four-minute YouTube clip, already viewed more than 800,000 times.

United confirmed the signing but played down the hype around Davis, who has moved back to Cheshire in northern England with his father, near the club's training ground.

"He's a member of our academy and we don't comment on individual members," a United spokesman told Reuters.

He added that the club sign about 40 players of Davis's age every year and, as is standard, will decide annually whether to renew his contract or release him.

What was so unusual in Davis's case was that his skills were brought to the attention of United's youth scouts by the DVD submission, which could inspire other hopefuls, the spokesman said.

"We're bracing ourselves for a whole series of DVDs," he added.

Davis has been thrilled at the chance to rub shoulders with some of his idols.

"The best part has been meeting lots of players like Wayne Rooney," he told British newspapers.
