Hey all, I saw some talk about Nick's Avatar: the Last Airbender in the Transformers thread, and I was glad that there were more fans of this awesome show. I haven't found a group to discuss this show with yet. I admit, I discovered it late, but I breezed through all the episodes.
Anyway, is there a hard date for the premeire of Book 3 yet? I haven't been able to find it's schedule anywhere.
Anyway, the voice of Uncle Iroh, Makoto Iwamatsu, has died :( and will be replaced from now on by someone who - hopefully - can keep a similar speaking pattern.
Favorite episode: "Earth King". Man, some awesome fight scenes in that baby. Particularly the battle to see the Earth King himself.

I have seen the first 2 seasons of the anime series, and loved it so far. Has season 3 started already? :huh

I keep hearing good things about this show; I just might break down and buy it.

Nope, it hasn't aired yet. Hopefully soon though. It's going to be great.
Loklorien s'Ilancy: You definitely should consider it at least. Definitely the best American cartoon out. The animation is infinitely better than the other stuff made in the US.

I discovered it when the last episode of Book I was airing and my kids had it on the TV while we were at dinner.

Everyone in my house (which means me and my three adult siblings) all watch it every Saturday morning. ^_^; I love it. I stumbled on it accidently, when they were showing a rerun at 4 am.

sIl - definitely check it out. Although it's targetted at kids and has fairly simple storylines, it's really cool. Plus, the flying bantha is cute :D

I bought the complete book one collection on your guys' word; plus I ran into Ak at Walmart! He also said to get it :p
And yeah, I told him he was a butt for not visiting in so long.

Ok, so I blew through season one in like, one day. Fantastic; the animation is the best I've seen in a long time coming out of US cartoons, and the writing is surprisingly good.
The humor seems put in at just the right spots (and is actually quite funny at times), and I must admit that General Iroh is my favorite character. Such a shame that Mako is dead now :(
I'm watching it again with Charley, and now he won't shut up about wanting a flying bison. He even called me into the kitchen last night, and ended with a 'yip-yip'. Wasn't sure how to interpret that one :p

Who wouldn't want a flying bison? Appa :love
Sokka and Zuko are my favorite characters :)

Man, Sokka really is amazingly funny. Initially, I thought he would just be delegated to the role of being annoying. But I can't help but like the guy. A lot of the time the things he says are genuinely clever and funny, plus for a guy with no powers, he's amazingly brave. I've gotta say he's my favorite human character as well.

I love this show :) LOVE IT!
And yes I do want a flying bison because that may be the coolest pet ever.
Favorite character, I'd say General Iro.

Am I the only one who doesn't like this show? It's like the rest of those wanna be anime style cartoons out there. I'm a little miffed on how everyone says it's an anime, when it's not, it's an american cartoon with anime style art.
I suppose that perhaps I might get into it a little bit if I actually had time to sit and watch it...I find I had a hard time reading the little comics of it they sell at work though ;.;

Well, just because it's produced in the States (although I'd say a good portion of the animation department probably have their share of experience working on anime) doesn't mean it's bad. I'm glad they've allowed themselves to be influenced by anime styles. It's one of the first times I've seen action/fight animation done right in the US. And they definitely have a very universal approach to the plots, whereas in Japanese anime, a lot is lost on American viewers who aren't familiar with certain areas of Japanese culture.

Evangelion illustrates your point perfectly, Hart. It's got a lot of parts that are quiet with no action going on, and it seems that kids here in the states crave explosions and omgfightstothedeath.

Its like an anime, except with a plot and dialogue that isn't awful.

No - crap is crap in any culture. And frankly most cartoons or comics or manga or Anime is crap, no matter what culture it comes from. There are few of any art form that rises up and becomes standouts.
Avatar is to my surprise rather good for all I've been able to watch and genuinely funny in places, with rather good action to boot. It's what I call good for a mental break form the other things I have flying about in the home office.

I also like a lot of anime, and really dislike american cartoons made in that style (and yay, Canada has FRENCH anime too :|), but I love Avatar. The fact that we all watch it together is saying a lot; I can't wait untill Book 3 because I WANT to know what's going to happen next. With a lot of shows today, it's just a one-off thing. There isn't one major "pay off" at the end that you're waiting for, it's just a series of stories that happen to the same characters on a different day. I think it's the characters that got me hooked, but it's the story that keeps me watching. :)
Charley -- we were going to dress Pickle as Appa for halloween ^_^; All he needs is horns and two extra legs! LOL!

The only anime that I've seen that I think is generally worth the money is Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and maybe GitS SOC and Gunsmith Cats. Everything else out there is either an extreme niche appeal, or is just plain unwatchable. I watch both Gunslinger Girl and Dragonball Z to name a few, but I have no illusions that these aren't very good for the total package.
Mandi: Take pictures! Pickle would make an excellent Appa :D

Nah, you aren't the only one. I watched a few episodes, i HATE it. I may assassinate the creators!

I had it Tivo'ed for a while, but the only episodes that I got to watch were #4 and #6 from Book 3. I've already seen all of Books 1 and 2. Very good anime, easily ranks up to number two (I'm a diehard Inuyasha fan, which is my #1 fav) on my fav list.
I'll probably end up waiting for the season box set as well.
