I saw the game at Target yesterday and was curious about it. But before even thinking about picking it up, I was wondering if anybody heard anything about it?

Yes, I heard it sucks :(

I was incredible bored during the limited amount of time I could tolerate playing it in the beta. Very dull graphics and gameplay. It does not feel like Tolkien's world at all. Just a cheap cash in attempt on a well known franchise I'm afraid.

My advice: Go for Age of Conan instead. It should launch by end of october.

That sucks so it is worse than Galaxies, I am guessing? I looked at the box and saw you couldn't even play as elves or dwarves only Men and hobbits. I thought that looked bad alone. I will check out Age of Conan when that comes out, in the meantime, I might just play Guild Wars again since its free.

Well, I MIGHT be wrong. You see, I played this really early in the beta (alpha almost), and it should have improved a lot by then. I searched around a bit, and although there are few reviews so far, most seem to like it. Don't expect anything groundbreaking different from the standard MMO formula though. I probably don't have to tell you what a time sink its going to be :)

I've heard of it. Seen a bit of the Beta. Doesn't look all that good and the graphics aren't great. I myself didn't play it, but I know those that have and none of them have been thrilled with it.

I would agree with Yog that, of the next round of MMOs scheduled to come out, Age of Conan has the most potential. I wasn't really impressed with what I've seen of/read about LOTR Online. Same with Warhammer.

Well there is this

That seems somewhat postive. I still will wait though.

From what I've read, both online and in magazines, the game does not look interesting in the least and it looks like it's just, as Yog pointed out, "Just a cheap cash in attempt on a well known franchise". I will certainly be staying away from it. While the visions of Tolkien make good books and movies, I don't think the realm of video games is appropriate. I have yet to play a LotR's themed game that I enjoyed.

I liked the Battle from Middle Earth that was a pretty good strategy game. the ROTK PS2 game was pretty good as well, but that is all that I can think of.

The problem is that the company that developed Lord of the Rings Online basically followed a formula. They didn't imbue it with love and creativity. Instead, they used an engine they had already created and pretty much just threw content at it instead of ingenuity.

For those that don’t know, the developer was Turbine.

They’re the guys who made Dungeons & Dragon’s Online. It’s another example of horrible, horrible gameplay, mediocre graphics, and boring grind.

I think the way to go for groundbreaking MMO experiences would now be Indie development. Large gaming companies don’t want to take risks. They want guaranteed income. It’s that simple.

Indies are more willing to experiment.

I...uh...I kinda like the Beta when I was playing it. I didn't think the graphics were THAT bad, and you CAN choose between dwarf, human, elf, and hobbit. It's really open, even giving you the chance to play as a monster with the chance to attack settlements and kill people. Put side by side, World of Warcraft vs. Lord of the Rings Online, I'd choose LOTR simply because it has more appeal. I mean, I got pretty far in the Beta and, if I had the money, would be willing to buy and pay for the full version just from playing it. Sure, it's not quite original...but it would have been impossible to be original with that world. Plus, it did just come out at the beginning of the month. Find a friend of yours that has it...and is obsessed with LOTR on the side, and try playing it before judging it.

I played the Beta for this game too, sad to say, it didn't catch my attention long enough to get me really addicted. Alot of it didn't even really seem "Lord of the Ringsy" at all... especially some of the monsters you fight. They looked like something cheesy that belongs in World of Warcraft or whatever.
