Heroes!!!
This episode was awesome. Of course, they've all been awesome, and this just continued the tradition. ;)
Favorite part:
Hiro: You're the flying man! *loud whooshing sound with accompanying hand movement*
Nathan: Can you keep it down?
Hiro: *little whooshing sound with accompanying hand movement*

Yeah, the whole "Flying man!" moment was one of my favorite parts of the episode. Plus when Hiro triumphantly pulled the sword out of the scabbard, only to find out that it was a replica :lol.
Y'know, one person who continues to amaze me on the show in Jack Coleman as HRG. I mean, up till now I think the thing he was most known for was playing a stud on Dynasty years ago. Who knew he could be so deliciously evil? :)

Don't know if anyone has posted on the subject before -- don't have the time to search through any more than the first page of posts, really -- but has anyone been watching the NBC Television show "Heroes."
I have to admit, when it first started, I hadn't the time or inclination to watch it. Then, one day at work one of my co-workers turned me on to it. I caught a few episodes repeated on the sci-fi network, and during the month's hiatus between new shows, I caught up by watching every show online at NBC.com.
Now, along with Battlestar Galactica and a few other shows, it's one of the shows I can't stand to miss.
EDIT ----Ooops -- no wonder I couldn't find anything. Was searching through wrong forum..... sorry.....

Woohoo!! So Nathan is Claire's papa! A part of me wasn't totally surprised by that revelation, but still, I jumped about 6 feet in the air when they showed who her mother was calling. Interesting twist, gonna be interesting to see how they follow it up. And it will also be interesting to see what happens if/when Peter finds out Claire is his niece.
Speaking of Peter, loved the moment when Claude threw him off the roof and told him to fly. That Claude, what a card :lol.
The stuff with Hiro and his dad was great too, can't recall having ever heard George Takei speak so much Japanese. I also noticed at the very end, when Kimiko was getting into the car, there appeared to be an in-joke in the license plate number of the car...I clearly saw NCC before it cut away, but I assume the whole number was NCC 1701. I'm sure somebody will have a screencap of it somewhere.
And Sylar in the Bennet home...I'd read in last week's TV Guide that someone who's been with the show from the beginning was going to die this month, and for a moment I thought it was going to be Mrs. Bennet. Oh, and I loved the moment when she told Sylar that it was funny to hear her husband referred to as "Mr. Bennet," she'd always known him as...then she switched to another subject :lol. I was even straining to look at his driver's license when Sylar held it up...has anyone ever figured out what his first name is? :lol
Overall, this was a great episode, I really liked it. :thumbup

There are possible spoilers from the episode on Monday in this post - I am not masking them because it already aired and if you haven't seen the episode just stay out of the thread. ;)
I thought it was hilarious that Mrs. Bennet nearly told us what Mr. Bennet's first name was, but interrupted herself to tell the dog off. :lol
Peter has finally broken through to his powers and it appears that Claude is someone who Mr. Bennet thought was dead (and in a way that indicates he tried to have him killed!). The plot thickens. And now he's Claire's uncle - it'll be interesting to see how Nathan reacts to having a superpowered daughter! And I bet he didn't know that his ex-lover was a firestarter - unless he did know.... dun dun dunnnn...
Speculation: The hero that dies is Matt Parkman. I have nothing to back this up except for what I got from the preview for next week - so I covered the name up just in case we have someone here who is purposely not watching the previews. Who kills him? Jessica...who is revealed to be totally evil?

Did it say specifically that a hero dies? Because some of the characters who have been with the show from the beginning are not "special".
Here's what last week's TV Guide interview with Tim Kring said:
Hit us with the bad news first. Who's dying? Are we going to hate you?
Some people will be upset, sure. During February sweeps we are going to kill off one of our regulars, someone who has been with the show from the very beginning.
You're using the word "regular" as opposed to "hero." Is that a clue?
You know what? I personally never use the term "hero" because I happen to know that, ultimately, some of our seemingly heroic characters will not be heroic. But with our ability to bend time and change things, not all those who are killed are making their last appearance on the show--and we actually do have plans for the character who's dying.
So take that as you will. I tell you who I've been afraid for a long time is going to get killed off...Ando. I dunno, I just *ahem* have a bad feeling about this.

Its not going to be Matt, first he wasn't in the first episode. And second previews never reveal the death. I am going with Ryan for the death on this one although my second guess would be Zack because the actor is leaving the show to play John Conner in the Terminator TV show they are making

Maybe it is Nikki - they say in the preview something along the lines of a decision is made between good and evil, which makes me think maybe the 'good' side of Nikki/Jessica is killed off.

I've been trying to figure out if I missed something since the show's second half started on Jan. 22. All of a sudden, Hiro's power is weakend. Did I miss the episode where this occurred, or was the first we know about this on the Jan 22 episode? I thought I had caught up with the show online, but I guess it's possible I missed it.
If I didn't miss anything, is his loss of power psychological -- because he wants the sword so badly, he convinced himself that his power is somehow tied to the sword?

I've presumed that Hiro's power is weakening at least due to a psychological factor, because he was so upset that he was unable to use his powers to save Charlie. As I recall, it's never been fully explained up to this point...
Lilaena De'Ville
Feb 10th, 2007, 04:15:41 PM
I believe it is totally psychological. I don't think the sword itself will do anything other than once its in his hand he'll believe he has his powers back. :p
And before the break Hiro was trying to return to Ando in the diner but ended up all sorts of other places (on the rooftop in Japan?) - losing Charlie upset him a lot. And now he's convinced himself that he needs the sword to focus his powers and then everything will be okay.

Feb 13th, 2007, 07:59:41 AM
If Jessica gets killed off, then Niki becomes kind of useless as a character...although the producers have made it clear that characters are going to come and go on the show, so it's going to have to happen sooner or later.
My money's riding on Mrs. HRG now. Seeing as how she's deterioriating to the point that HRG allegedly took her to a neurologist, plus now she doesn't even recognize Claire or (heavens to Betsy!!!) her beloved Mr. Muggles, makes me think she's going to deteriorate further until all that's left is death. Plus there was the moment in the trailer for next week's episode where an obviously emotional HRG was telling someone (looked like Claire) that "I was only trying to protect my family!" I could be completely wrong, but that's what I'm sensing at the moment.
And if it is Mrs. HRG, does that mean that you can only have your mind wiped clean by the Haitian so many times before it does extreme damage? Hm....
Loved the episode overall, can't wait to see what's up with Ando and Hope :lol.
Jedi Master Carr
Feb 13th, 2007, 06:04:38 PM
I don't think she is going to die. I think she will end up in an medical hospital because she can't remember anything. I think she had her mind wiped way too many times. Also I think a major characters is going to die and I don't consider her major. Also they could kill off Niki now that would be shocking and leave Jessica around. Also Niki could gain Jessica's powers by killing her, although she won't be as interesting without the other side of her personality.

Someone flies, someone dies... I hope Nathan doesn't get killed! But Peter could be the flier, and so Nathan could be the one who dies. Except that in the extended preview for this season there is a scene with Nathan that we haven't seen yet "How fast do you think we can fly?" that makes me think that he lives and he and Peter are going to fly together.
So Nathan is probably the one who flies. <--speculation based on previews

The new TV Guide has some blurbs about Heroes in a few different places that I thought were worth sharing...first of all, they said to "save the date," March 5th, because that's the night a "major character" goes bye-bye. Now, I'm confused because I thought someone was dying this coming Monday, so are 2 people dying in the coming weeks? Or was the promo another case of NBC airing a misleading promo? Entertainment Weekly gave the show a glowing review last week but did ask NBC to quit airing such "bombastic" previews that make it look like the events of the upcoming episode are so earth-shattering that it just might kill you :lol. I couldn't help but think of that comment when I first saw the trailer for the next episode...anywho, I'm still not convinced about Niki finally killing off Jessica, I still think it's a little too early for that. But I had a conversation with someone at work who I just found out this week watches the show, and she said something I've said here before, that she has this weird feeling that Ando might bite the dust. It might be a monumental moment in Hiro's Campbell-eque hero's journey to lose his beloved sidekick...we shall see.
The second blurb in TV Guide is about a really fun and appropriate cameo in the episode airing on Monday...although it's there in black and white in TV Guide, I'm not going to spoil it here. Just look out for the bus driver...'nuff said :mischief.
Jedi Master Carr
Feb 16th, 2007, 12:38:59 PM
I think they mislead in the preview and the death will happen the following week. I am not sure who else might get killed off than. I am going to look at the suspects. I am including major characters who appeared in the first episode. I am going to rule Matt and DL because they didn't show up then.
Peter- I think he is safe, he is just too huge of a character.
Claire- Same as Peter besides she kind of died once and then they went through all that effort to save her she is safe.
Nathan- He could but I doubt it, his story line is too interesting.
Hiro- Another major character that is safe.
Ando- Well they could kill of the sidekick (Bucky, Jason Todd, etc it has happened before in the comics), but I don't think they will besides the way it looks in the upcoming episodes they won't really be in danger unless Linderman has him killed.
Mohinder- Well he is hanging out with Sylar but I don't think they will kill him. His character I think is too important to the series.
Issac- He is a possibility, especially since Sylar already killed him in the future if we go by Hiro's trip.
Simione- I doubt it honestly, I think they want to keep up the female interest for Peter.
Mr. Bennett or HRG- They could especially if they bring Linderman in as a major player. I think he works for Linderman and if Linderman gets tired of his failures he could have him killed.
Niki/Jessica This is what I was thinking kill off one of the two personalities. Although the Tv Guide article said people would be upset. I am not sure if anybody would be upset about Jessica be offed. Maybe if they killed off Niki instead but that would make the character a pure villain then and do they want her to compete with Sylar?
Micha- No way will they kill of a child, IMO.
So I think now it will either be Issac or Mr Bennett. I can't rule out Niki or Jessica nor Ando. I kept off Zach because I am wondering if they are just going to write him out another way.
Doc Milo
Feb 16th, 2007, 01:42:04 PM
Also Niki could gain Jessica's powers by killing her, although she won't be as interesting without the other side of her personality.
I might be wrong on this, but I think the powers are not necessarily restricted to only one of the personalities. I think Niki has the same powers as Jessica, but doesn't really realize this. If the powers are genetic, as Mohinder keeps saying, then Niki and Jessica have the same exact genetic code. Niki believes Jessica is a different person, but she really is just a different personality, therefore, any power Jessica has, Niki also has. When Niki finally realizes this, it may give her the cofidence to fight Jessica once and for all. Not that this fight will be a physical one. It will be totally mental/psychological. I thought, when Niki was in prison, talking with DL and her son through the glass, and she asked if she could just give her son a hug, and was denied, that she defended herself against the guards with "supernatural strength" as Niki and not as Jessica because after tossing the guards, she looked at her hands and was shaking her head....
I don't think the death will be one of the personalities. It could be the Niki/Jessica character in total.
My money is on Ando or Isaac.
Jedi Master Carr
Feb 16th, 2007, 02:35:40 PM
I could say Issace but I am betting on HRG right now based on some other things I have read. I have also hear a rumor that Eric Roberts is joining the show as someone connected with HRG. I suspect he will be Linderman.
Edit scratch what I said above. Roberts is playing a new character. I just read that Linderman will be played by none other than Malcolm McDowell. Actually, I like that better, McDowell can play great villains.

Well, for once the previews didn't mislead...someone did fly, and someone did die. I was shocked that it was Simone, although after thinking about it, it kind of made sense because I think her storyline was either completely done or bound to become repetitive. But boy, is this ever going to make Isaac and Peter's already contentious relationship even worse, what with Isaac accidentally killing Simone and her dying in Peter's arms. Whoa. But from the thing I read in TV Guide, I guess someone else is dying in 2 weeks.
And we appear to have said good-bye to 2 other characters, at least for the time-being, what with Hiro telling Ando to go back home and Claude panicking and literally disappearing. I love both those characters and will miss them if they're truly out of the series.
Overall, it was a fabulous episode, what is Mohinder going to think when he realizes that "Zane" is actually Sylar, and he led him right to poor Dale of the superpowered hearing? Massive drama, for sure.
Next week's episode looks like it's going to KICK BUTT!!!! I can't wait!!! If someone else is going to die in the March 5th episode, I bet it's going to be someone in the Bennet house....

Well Lost could also get better, if they start to move towards its endgame.
Personally, I think 24 has done a better job in managing things in terms of serial drama. Of course that might because they pretty much just take things one season at a time and not really try to do any storyline that connects all of the seasons.

I totally, totally agree, I loved the episode. I've said before how much I like HRG, and last night's episode made me like him even more. As cruel and heartless as the man can be, the one thing they've made clear about him is that he truly loves his family. And what he did to protect Claire throughout her life proves that. I loved the moment when crispy Claire came out of the house, then HRG realized the Eric Roberts character was standing right there and saw what she can do. He knew that life as he knew it up to that point was over. And the final scene, with him handing Claire over to the Haitian so that she can remain hidden and allowing himself to be shot was actually very moving...and when the Haitian moved in to do his mind-wiping thing, wow. :thumbup
The flashbacks were great. Loved seeing that Claude was so involved with HRG, I just want to know how he survived the fall off the bridge. (Or did he really fall? After all, he disappeared before he completely fell.... ;).) And cripes, Hiro's dad is involved too? That just totally blew me away :eek.

Really, really great episode, very moving. I liked how Matt and HRG worked as a team and basically gained each other's trust. Though it was sad to see Matt wind back up in that place as a test subject. :( I don't think HRG liked that too much either.
And I agree, that final scene was very emotional, between Claire and HRG... man.. :(
Claude totally did not take a fall off that bridge. He made it look like he did, that wiley ole coot.
I had a feeling that Hiro's father was somehow involved in all this, or in cahoots with Linderman. I mean, why else randomly show up at the correct place and the correct time to 'stop' Hiro from beginning his journey to meet with Linderman. He knew. Oh yes, he knew.
This episode gave me two questions:
1.) When any of the 'heroes' are under a lot of emotional stress, or rather, on their deathbed, do they lose control of their powers? Or is it a concious (sp?) choice they make? With Radioactive man, he seems like he has a really decent grasp of his powers and can control it with amazing finess, but when he got shot, he sorta was like... "boom" and I believe he really couldn't stop it. And when Claude was shot in the flashback, his invisible-ness faded in and out repeatedly as he was shot - it really looked like he couldn't control it until the very end. And with Claire, well... every time she dies her powers always comes back to bring her to life! :p
And 2.) The Haitian told HRG that he was working for someone that superseded HRG's own calls when he didn't wipe claire's mind... something about Claire's real family. Did I miss something, or miss hear what he said, or what? And if I did hear him correctly... who exactly did he take the order from? Himself? HRG (in some tragic twist!)? Nathan? ...Claire's biological mother? *blinks*

I thought the episode was pretty cool. I think that shadow organization is controlled by three individuals. Eric Roberts (I don't think we ever caught his name), Hiro's dad, and Linderman. I suspect Linderman is the head of the organization and the others either work for him or are collaberating with him. Oh and Malcolm McDowell is in the next episode.

I know, I wonder if TV Guide is going to have to explain something about their big thing advertising that everyone should stay home and watch last night since someone was going to die. Either dates were wrong and they were referring to 2 weeks ago when Simone died, or else...I don't know.
But...oh, Lord, was that ever a terrific episode last night. I don't know which I liked best, the Nathan/Linderman meeting, Hiro finally getting the sword with Ando's assistance and then teleporting to the ruined future, HRG's cover story about Claire's disappearance being blown, all the Mohinder/Sylar stuff, or (hallelujah!) getting a shapeshifter on the show. It was all excellent, excellent, excellent.
One promise the episode did deliver on was its having another one of those crazy endings...I have to admit I let out a screech when Sylar started doing his thing to Peter. Then the screech got much, much louder when I realized that the show won't be back until April 23rd! :shakefist

Looks like Isaac will probably still be killed by Sylar. I'm curious as to how set in stone his pictures of the future are, since everything has at least looked like what he's painted, if not turned out the way he interpeted it.

I think Simione was the death because she actually died in the beginning of the episode. I read about that on the ASK columun in TV guide. I don't think Peter or Sylar will die. I think the fight will be a stat still and Sylar will flee.

Yea, Peter will definately heal as fast as Sylar can finger cut. Or, at least, not be too hurt by it, since in the preview for the April episode... Sylar says something along the lines of, "Normally people are screaming right about now."
And I'm so very glad that my second question was answered!

Mar 8th, 2007, 01:10:32 PM
Peter should become very powerful after this confrontation. Sylar, it seems, has to kill someone in order to gain their power (although, I'm not 100% sure of this.) Peter just has to be around them (or do they have to use their powers around him?) Peter should, during their confrontation, be able to "aborb" all of the powers Sylar already has (or at least the powers Sylar uses around him...) Sylar has telekinesis, Peter, in their confrontation, should be able to gain telekinesis. Sylar can "finger cut" -- Peter then, should be able to do the same, at some point during their confrontation....
Lilaena De'Ville
Mar 8th, 2007, 05:02:33 PM
I think Sylar has to study the brain - what he does with it after he looks at it I dont' know. Maybe he does have to eat it! So I would assume that looking at/consuming a brain = person dies.
And Peter has already used Sylar's telekinesis!
Speculation: Peter and Nathan's mom is superpowered and has perhaps been the person giving Peter his dreams. She is definetely more than she seemed before, now that we know she's the one who's been giving the Hatian his orders. Can't wait for April 23rd!!! :shakefist

Next week: Seeing what happens when they don't save the world and go with Linderman's plan instead will be very interesting. At least we know how Jessica might get on the right side of the law - Linderman messed with Micah and that's a big no-no in her crazy book.

Oh some fun theories we've been tossing around here at my house:
Isaac told Sylar that he knew how Sylar could be stopped and he had already written it down or passed it on or something like that. I don't remember the exact wording. My hubby thinks this means that the secret to stopping Sylar or the exploding man will be in the comic that he sent off to the printers just before he bit the big one. Perhaps his courier will post scans of it online so the Heroes can see it without having to wait for it to go to print?

I knew that Nathan was Slyar. He just seemed too evil to be the old Nathan. Man Sylar is just a monster. I want to know who actually blew up. Right now my theory is that Peter tried to stop him and just couldn't control all the power and used the radioctive power that he got from Ted and blew up NYC. Will Hiro kill Sylar is the question. Although I think they need all of the major characters to take on Sylar.

So, can Sylar restart time after someone stops it? Or did Hiro just lose his own focus?
Also, I sorta almost love the fact that they made Sylar more human. A tragic villian. Kinda sad to see he was willing to stop what he was doing, but because of his past, it ended up like the boy who cried wofl. :(

I thought this episode was great - and I think Hiro lost focus, not that Sylar was able to affect Hiro's power.
Everything and everyone is colliding together, and things are definitely ramping up for the season finale in two weeks. Aparently Linderman and the Company are working together (I can't remember if we knew that already or not) and Mom Petrelli is working with Linderman as well. The Heroes 'verse is getting pretty vast as the season progresses. Our Heroes are at least the second generation of 'special' people, there is a first generation of people that include Linderman and Ma Petrelli, and most of them are working towards saving the world through destruction or something like that. A league of supervillains. ;)
Makes me think that Hiro's dad will most likely have a super power as well. :dance

I did think last night's episode was a little lackluster, but it still had some great stuff in it. I agree that what they did with Sylar was brilliant...you almost had to feel sorry for him when he realized that his mother had been stabbed with the scissors, because it really was an accident. But once we saw him drawing pictures in Mom's blood, it was like he'd finally gone completely over the edge and was now a bonafide psycho.
I think last night's episode was like the calm before the storm...the next 2 episodes are pretty much going to rock the world, I think. I loved the glimpse of Hiro's dad with the sword at Hiro's neck. And, of course, hearing Sylar say, "Boom!"

Holy cow, yeah, what a body count in last night's episode. Seeing Sylar get to Ted wasn't a big shock, but Thompson and Linderman caught me by surprise. Especially Linderman, wow! I'm sorry to see him go since I like Malcolm McDowell so much, but I really like the fact that DL got the drop on him through his powers, and what a great thing that Linderman didn't live to see if his plans came to fruition. But what a moment that's going to be when Nathan's wife hops up out of her wheelchair to show the world that she's been miraculously healed.
I think my favorite aspect of the episode was the revelation that Papa Nakamura isn't such a nasty man after all, and that he's actually proud of Hiro. I'm just nervous about Ando now that he's gone off after Sylar on his own...I've had this bad feeling that Ando was going to die before this was all said and done, and now it looks very possible that it might happen.
I loved the final scene, the montage of everyone while Nathan was giving his acceptance speech. A goosebump-inducing moment.
I think I caught a couple of interesting things in the preview for next week's episode, like it appears DL is still alive, and then it sure looked like Mohinder comforting Matt in a hallway with Matt having blood on him, wonder what that's all about. (Oh, loved how Matt faked their way into the building past the security guard, that was awesome :lol.) And are we going to see the big Peter vs. Sylar showdown we've all been salivating for? The rumor is that the taste we got in Five Years Gone of Peter and Sylar... will be fully real and awesome in next week's episode. :dance
Candace standing in for Linderman? I don't think so... for one she'd be dead and not sitting with Micah. I think the Candace shocker is going to be what she really looks like. ;) Can't wait for that reveal, hopefully not as Sylar is killing her and taking her power because I really really don't want him to get it. :uhoh

I cannot wait for next week. It'll hopefully answer so many questions, but it'll probably give us many more for the second season.
Did anyone catch a sneak peek of next week's episode on the TV Guide channel? I saw it last night, and it has Molly possible giving light to a new villian. Matt asks her about her powers and her ability to see everyone. "Well, I can't see everyone. There's one I can't see. But he can see me." "Who is it? Is it the boogeyman?" "No. Much worse."*

I was surprised they killed Sylar, unless he can somehow survive that. The question is Nathan dead? I suppose he could have released Peter at the last second and flew away. Finally, I think Molly was hinting at someone worse than Sylar. So there is an evil person out there who is worse than him, I think they are setting up Season's 2 main villain.

My only complaint was that I really did think we were going to get a big apocalyptic showdown between Sylar and Peter, so I was startled that it didn't reach the big crescendo that I thought it would. But Hiro came through with doing what he was supposed to do...I was bummed that Sylar was dead because he's been such a great villain, but then came that one shot of the trail of blood leading to the manhole cover...heck, Sylar ain't dead, at least not for now, woohoo! Although his defeat is inevitable, no doubt about it. But Molly's revelation of the one person she can't see is definitely a set-up for the next villain coming along, and this one sounds like he's going to be Sylar x 1000.
Watching Nathan fly off with Peter, and then seeing the explosion up in the atmosphere...wow. That was a very affecting moment. I'm of the notion that Nathan will have let Peter go at the last moment, although with Nathan now having thwarted Linderman's great plan, well, I'm not totally sure where his story might go from now.
Claire's swan dive out the window was priceless. And huzzah, we now have HRG's first name! :lol
And needless to say, the final scene of Hiro in feudal Japan was great. I've read that the Generations storyline will really delve into the history of the characters we've seen so far, and so we'll see more of Mama Petrelli and Papa Nakamura and people like them.
PS...that footage from Fantastic Four they subjected us to before the final act? Blech. :x

I watched Heroes for the first time during the Sci-Fi channel marathon on Saturday, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I'm sure I missed a few things, but I think I was up to speed enough to follow the finale and enjoy it quite a bit.
However, I'm left with a rather glaring question.
A few episodes ago, we saw what the world will be like five years from now if the bomb goes off in New York. Future Hiro assumed that the key was to save the cheeleader - presumably because if Sylar caught Claire, he would become, for most purposes, indestructible and unstoppable. However, that wasn't the case after all, because Claire was still around in the future timeline and the bomb had still gone off. I took this to mean that Future Hiro was wrong and that Present Hiro would be returning to the past under false assumptions. As long as Claire was safe, he would try to kill Sylar, not realizing that Peter Petrelli was the bomb.
As it turned out in this episode, Hiro (apparently) succeeds in killing Sylar, and, as expected, Peter starts to go nuclear anyway, and there's nothing Hiro can do to stop it. What saves New York is Nathan going against The Plan and sacrificing himself.
While present-Hiro may have performed different actions since returning to the present than future-Hiro, he had no significant dealings with Nathan Petrelli in that time. All other things being equal, I would have expected Nathan's actions to be the same as those that originally led to the bomb going off. My question is this: what changed between the future-Hiro timeline and the actual timeline that ended up causing such a profound difference in Nathan's actions?
PS...that footage from Fantastic Four they subjected us to before the final act? Blech. :x
I agree whole-heartedly. You could hardly write stupider dialogue if you tried. As if the big Dodge logo on the front of the Fantasticar wasn't enough to tip you off on what the movie's really about (as if the twenty-minute product placement bonanza in the last movie wasn't enough either)...

I know...it's just that I don't want to think that Nathan might be dead. I found myself thinking, Geez, did anyone absorb Linderman's power???. That power would come in very handy right about now, not only for Nathan, but also for Matt and DL.
And Dragon, I had to think about your comments for a while, but I think I came up with at least a partial answer...the whole "save the cheerleader, save the world" thing wasn't as literal as some people, including Future Hiro, thought. In that timeline where Claire was killed by Sylar, he absorbed her power and would have been able to be the human bomb. Instead, Peter did save her, and the action still ended up saving the world, although it wasn't in as obvious a way as people suspected. Because what changed for Nathan was Claire's words ("The future isn't set in concrete") and her actions (jumping out the window after saying she already had a family). The close-up on Nathan after she jumped out the window was incredibly intense, and you could just imagine something clicking inside of him. If Claire hadn't done those things, I don't think Nathan would have been spurred to save the world like he did. And if Nathan is truly dead, then it was an extraordinarily selfless and loving thing done by a man who was quite often selfish and nasty...giving his life to save millions of other peoples' lives and spare his brother the guilt of being the cause of such a catastrophe.
*whew*
So like I said, I think that's at least a partial answer to your question. :)
Dragon

Oh, certainly Claire played a role in changing Nathan's mind. But that still doesn't explain what it was that changed the timeline. Because Claire was alive in the future timeline we saw and presumably would have had the opportunity to say those things to Nathan. So apparently, just saving her wasn't enough to avoid the bomb.
The only things that the future episode could have changed in the timeline we saw were Hiro, Ando, and everyone they came into contact with. As far as I know, they never met Claire, and the only time they ran into Nathan (to enlist his help) he seemed entirely unaffected.
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps Hiro would have approached killing Sylar at the showdown in a different way, and the battle would have turned out in some fashion that Nathan wasn't able to reach Peter and prevent the explosion. But that seems unnecessarily convoluted. To really make it clear that Hiro made a difference, we'd need to see a tangible way in which he made Nathan's sacrifice possible, even if it was removed from Nathan by several degrees.
I think they could have made it work out, but it seems to me like they just overlooked some of their loose ends. And after the very skillful build-up, I found that disappointing. :(
Still some neat stuff in the episode, though. And I loved Hiro's final subtitle. :)

I also think that when dealling with time travel, there's always going to be loose ends...it's just the nature of the beast. It always makes me think of an episode of Deep Space Nine where Chief O'Brien was suddenly traveling a few minutes into the future, and there was one scene where both O'Briens were on-screen when one of them said, "I hate temporal paradoxes." That made me laugh, because it was so true...it would be interesting if Hiro were able to go into the future 5 years again and see how things have changed and what impact this moment had on that timeline. Plus, there's still the matter of Sylar not being dead, at least not yet, and the question of, just because Peter exploded, does that mean he will now suddenly be able to handle Ted's powers? Is it possible that the explosion in New York wasn't prevented, but just delayed?
Oy, it's too early in the morning for such deep thinking :). I'm not sure if I have anymore ideas about how to answer your question...anybody else have any ideas?

In the last episode before this, we see Hiro interact with Nathan -- this is after Hiro goes to the future. He tries to get Nathan to help. Nathan says that nothing can stop the bomb. Hiro then says to Nathan that in the future, he's a villian. He screams it at the car as Nathan drives away, VILLIAN!
That would not have happened in the timeline we saw in Hiro's future travel. Hiro of the future was surprised at running into past Hiro when they first encountered each other in Isaac's loft in that future episode.
I believe the knowledge that Nathan of the future is a villian, and then Claire's actions in this episode let Nathan see just how much of a villian he already had become. Giving him the decision, Do I want to be a hero or a villian?
Rutabaga
May 22nd, 2007, 06:57:42 AM
I agree, that scene with Hiro and Nathan where Hiro yelled, "Villain!" at Nathan had to play a role as well.
I think it comes down to time being fluid...as a wise being once said, "Always in motion is the future." ;)
Doc Milo
May 22nd, 2007, 08:38:04 AM
We also have to remember that Nathan of the future was not Nathan, but Sylar. Perhaps things unfolded a bit differently in that timeline. Sylar perhaps killed Nathan before Nathan could come and save the day in that timeline.
This might sound a bit convoluted. But here goes: Hiro is in the future, thus has not yet returned to the present. Therefore, Hiro, in the future timeline that he views is not there to kill Sylar, or even have any of the interactions with Sylar that he's had before the final confrontation. The confrontation occurs without Hiro. When Nathan arrives, Sylar is still alive, fights him. They fly off, Sylar kills Nathan. Meanwhile, Peter goes boom

May 22nd, 2007, 03:11:30 PM
Ah I see what you're saying! I was trying to figure out all the different alternate timelines we've encountered in this season.
Timeline one: This is the one Future Hiro comes from. Sylar is the bomb. He is indestructable because he killed Claire at Homecoming, and when Hiro tries to stab him he regenerates. Ando dies in NY. Micah dies in nuclear blast. Peter and Hiro team up to fight crime. Hiro spends 5 years trying to figure out how to fix it without creating a "rift" - goes back in time to the subway to talk to Peter Petrelli in the past.
Timeline two: Future Hiro speaks to Peter while he is on the subway with Mohinder. Peter saves the cheerleader. Sylar does not have regenerative powers. Peter is the bomb (by accident or on purpose). Sylar survives the bomb somehow, kills Nathan, DL, and Candace, absorbing their powers. I assume he does not kill Molly Walker as Noah (:D) Bennett is able to hide Claire from 'Nathan'. This is the timeline Future Hiro returns to. Our Hiro jumps to this timeline five years in the future, and finds out what happens when the bomb is allowed to happen. Oh nos! He jumps back with Ando to save New York.
Timeline Three: This is the timeline Hiro returns to. It will not turn out the same as timeline two because Hiro has seen the future and he is now interacting in this timeline to change the future. He confronts Nathan and calls him a villian. Add this confrontation to the empassioned plea that Claire gives him before throwing herself out a window, and Nathan makes a different choice than he did in Timeline Two. He comes to help Peter, and flies him into the upper atmosphere, making the ultimate sacrifice and ironically proving that he was worthy of leadership all along. Hiro also stabs Sylar "killing" him, though it seems Sylar escapes into the sewers, which may be what he did in Timeline Two, though how he survived the blast is a bit beyond me.
Also I don't know how in Timeline Two Micah would be dead, but Nikki and DL and Nathan and Bennett and Claire all survive. They're all obviously there at ground Zero. Unless Nathan gets a big net and scoops them all up and flies them away, but Micah falls out. ;)

I think there are two things you have to realize to answer the question. The first is that If Sylar had gotten Claire's power, there would be no way to kill him. This is evident in the fact that Future Hiro had already tried after Sylar killed Ando in the future and he had failed. The other thing you have to realize is that Nathan did not survive to be in the future that Present Hiro went to. There's no saying whether under the circumstances Sylar, with his invulnerable self, would then have gone to get all the obvious powers that he could. In the future, he had obviously already killed Candice and taken her ability to change what people see, and he had killed Nathan and gotten his ability to fly.
Had Sylar become invincible, he would not have needed to hide or fear being stopped, so why hide? All he would have to do is find out someone had the ability, then proceed to either use them like he did the Future Matt, or kill them like he did Nathan.
That was the problem the Future Hiro ran into. He never could have followed every single choice and action. Honestly, Hiro could have gone into the past and stopped Sylar from scaring and then killing his mother, or better yet, Hiro could have gone and killed Sylar BEFORE he found out about his power and before he killed Dr. Suresh (or however you spell his name) Sr. Better yet, why not go and kill Sylar AND Ted, that way, there is no bomb and Future Hiro obviously had no qualms about killing people. Like many of the Heroes, I don't think Hiro, present or future, realized the potential of his power. So far, the only person I've seen in the series that used their power in the best way possible in a situation was Nathan in the last episode.
And now that three people have pretty much said the same thing three different ways, if you're still reading this and don't have most of it figured out, you might consider just watching the show over again. :D

I think Nathan was influenced heavily by Claire. Peter saving Claire, gave Nathan the chance to meet her. She influence him to save Peter especially with what she told him in that episode. He realized that he couldn't let millions die and he was willing to sacrifice his life to save people. If he is dead or not we will see. If he lives that probably means nobody died in the episode as I think Matt and DL will recover and it sure looks like Sylar is still alive.

May 22nd, 2007, 04:12:14 PM
No, that would have happened in Timeline Two as well. The only difference between Two and Three is that Hiro knew what would happen in the future in Timeline Three and so he is the wild card that changes everything. So we have to assume that Claire's plea is not enough to move Nathan, but add in Hiro's confrontation with Claire's plea and we have the magic combination to save the world. :)

Here's a question for you that blows it all out of the water.. Why did nathan have to sacrifice himself? Peter has his power why not fly himself up into the atmosphere?
Because he had a hard enough time trying to stop the nuclear glowing thing. If he tried to fly, he might lose it control, and blow up right away.
Also like Blood crest said why not go back to Sylar before his power manifested and kill him then.. Course then we wouldn't have this coool story...Hero's rocks.!!
Now that's the real dilemma. With the power to teleport, stop time and even travel in time, Hiro has the most potent abilities. You could split the question in 2 part: What could future Hiro do and what could present Hiro do.
Present Hiro did not have that great level of control over his powers, so that might explain how he is not able to travel to the time and location to kill Sylar before he gets dangerous.
Future Hiro, had a lot more control. But on the other hand, how would he know where to find Sylar. Also, this might also cause a paradox or break up the space-time continuum. The one time where he did travel back, future Hiro did not talk to present Hiro directly, but to Ando.
Expanding on that, what would happen to future Hiro regardless of all this. Will he cease to exist, or would that time line run parallel in an alternative dimension. Or maybe when present Hiro travelled to the future, it was not even a real future, just a physical presentation of a possible future that would only manifest with the current mechanisms and conditions, unless they were changed so it would steer to an alternative path. But then, if it was not real, how could a future Hiro travel back in time..
Another possibility, the future time line / dimension only exists as present Hiro travels forward in time. It is created as present Hiro "speeds" up time, and this allows future Hiro to travel back in time. But the future Hiro had already travelled back in time, BEFORE present Hiro had travelled forward in time. How can future Hiro travel back in time if none of that happened?
Which leads to yet another mind boggling possibility. The future "cool looking" Hiro will exist, but in an alternative path, because the bomb never wiped out New York. This is the one path Hiro can not change, because future already Hiro travelled back in time, creating this paradox. This implies, fate is set to some extent after all, and while the future is not written in stone, there are some things you cannot change.
Confused yet? So am I :lol
Yog
May 23rd, 2007, 05:52:08 AM
It just occurred to me, the "speed up time" theory does not work, because if that was the case, two Hiros could not coexist at the same time. Present Hiro would just fast forward all the events to after the cataclysm happened, and future Hiro would simply not be there, cause he never existed in the first place. Time travelling forward in time would imply more than one dimension.

Plus, it was established with Hiro's attempts to save Charlie early in the season that there are certain things that, despite all his power, Hiro cannot change.
As for Peter and why he didn't fly away himself...like Hiro, Peter hasn't learned to control everything just yet. Plus, as other people have theorized, I don't think he can utilize more than one power at a time. And as Yog said, Peter was so overwhelmed with the radiation that any attempt to fly could have caused immediate detonation.
I rewatched the last act on NBC.com last night...the scene with Nathan and Peter is still just extraordinarily powerful and moving. What an awesome moment :clap.

Not really the showdown I was hoping for, but it did the job well enough.Seriously. There wasn't really a fight there. Also, Sylar getted stabbed was kind of anticlimatic. I think it would have been all kinds of awesome if Sylar was about to off Peter and a sword blade suddenly appeared in his chest. He's completely mystified, turns around, and time-phased Hiro is staring him down.
As for timeline stuff: I think what they went for a sort of Legacy of Kain style timeline. That is, there aren't multiple timelines, per se, but one timeline that's always trying to adapt to the changes being made.
"Drop a stone into a rushing river - the current simple courses around it and flows on as if the obstruction were never there."
In other words, the predefined timeline is pretty difficult to significantly alter. If you make a change, it will simply work around it and try to get back on course. Originally, Sylar would have been the bomb. Future Hiro went back to save Claire, thus giving himself the opportunity to kill Sylar and prevent the bomb. But history simply adjusted a few details, making it so that the bomb would still go off, even with the alterations.
The pebble he dropped into the timestream wasn't enough to divert it. Instead, they needed to drop a boulder - a change in everyone's destiny, not just Claire's.
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps Hiro would have approached killing Sylar at the showdown in a different way, and the battle would have turned out in some fashion that Nathan wasn't able to reach Peter and prevent the explosion. Both Peter and Sylar had the potential to be the bomb. If Sylar had managed to steal Claire's powers, then even if Nathan had showed up to help his brother, Sylar would have blown up. It was set on that course and was pretty determined to see it happen. The future wasn't changed by one event, but by a series of events.

I don't think Sylar was ever the bomb. In the Hiro in the Future episode, Hiro thought Sylar was the bomb because everyone thought Sylar was the bomb, because "Nathan" and Peter made up the story that Sylar was the bomb. Peter revealed to Nikki that he was really the bomb, not Sylar.
In past episodes, Peter saw himself blow up.
I think in all "timelines" Peter was always the bomb. Hiro of the Future was operating on the false assumption that Sylar was the bomb. But he ends up being right, anyway, about saving the cheerleader to save the world, because it is Claire who returns compassion back to Nathan. I am making the assumption the Sylar still "becomes president" by absorbing Candice's power, and killing Nathan in all timelines but the one that played out. Of course, this is only an assumption because we never do get to see the future where Claire was not saved.

I thought it was an awesome finale, although I thought Hiro had too easy a time killing Sylar.
Plus, is Peter only able to use one power at a time? Why couldn't he fly himself up into space?
And Sylar is still alive...? Come. On.
But other than that, an awesome job. BEST. SHOW. EVER.
