Well, they are quite rare.

Maybe in florida, but they're pretty common even in the rest of the southeast.

In central and south Florida, tornadoes are a very rare thing in the winter. Mainly because a lot of the cold fronts lose their energy or even don't make it all the way down here to create that kind of weather pattern. That one storm system though was quite powerful.
