Babel leads the pack with 7 nods and The Departed is right behind with 6. Leonoardo Di Caprio got two nominations for best male actor in Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" and "Blood Diamond".

Well, the film critics groups are probably really the first indicators. ;) The GG can tell us alot, but not everything. They've missed often on matching the Oscars BP the last few years. Granted, it's still cool to win the GG in it's own right.

The general consesus is that Letters from Iwo Jima, The Queen, and The Departed are in the Oscar BP race and that Dreamgirls, Babel, United 93 & Little Miss Sunshine are competing for the last 2 slots.

What do you think of Leo's and Scorseses chances this year?

DiCaprio has no shot at the Oscar. And I won't believe Scorcese will win until I see it. Especially after 2 years ago.

Really? I thought with 2 GG nominations, Leo had great chances. As for Scorsese, I hope he finally gets it as he is long overdue. I have to actually watch these movies for a more qualified opinion. I plan to do the Oscar marathon this year.

Forest Whitaker has been winning all the critics awards so far. And Peter O' Toole has never won a competitive Oscar. One of those two will win the big guy in February.

I haven't seen any of the nominated pictures, although there are a couple of them in my Netflix queue, and I really really want to see The Queen.

I'm just tickled about the TV drama nomination for Heroes :thumbup.

I saw Apocalypto last night. It was incredible. It is not for the squeamish, but it was a startlingly clear look at an extinct civilization, and I loved it.

I hate, however, people who bring babies and 6 yr olds into rated R movies that feature grisly and horrible mutilation and death. :shakefist

I don't get it either. It happens all the time to a scary extent. There were small children when me and Drin saw it Tuesday night as well. A SCHOOL NIGHT >_<

Wow, why have I not even HEARD of many of these movies? Well, it could be that I just don't care, or that they simply don't interest me.

The day an action movie can get recognized is the day I'll start caring again. Whoopee, people win awards. That doesn't make a lousy but technically brilliant movie any more enjoyable, or sometimes even enjoyable in the first place.

Not only is it disrespectful to everyone else who paid $8.75-$9.75+refreshments to see the movie in theatres, but it is terrible parenting.

I want to own a movie theatre so I can ban babies from all movies except for rated G matinees, and enforce a "no one under 13 in R rated movies ever no exceptions" policy. Oh, and actually have bouncers instead of ushers, so that people who talk or who pull out their cell phones get thrown out.

From the shots I have seen, Helen Mirren looks great in The Queen. Can't wait to see that one.

I'm also glad to see that Helen Mirren is following up her Emmy win for Elizabeth I with a Globe nod. That was a truly spectacular miniseries. What a year she's had, playing both Queen Elizabeths. :D

Sorry, but very few action films are worth much of anything.

And in many ways LOTR were action films of sorts. Even more they were fantasy...a genre even more likely to be ignoredaccording to internet fanboys. So maybe you should care. ;)

While my taste doesn't always reflect the Academy, or Hollywood Foreign Press, or NBR, or any of these other groups, I usually find they do a pretty decent job.

Action movies are also going out of style anyway. They have been doing poorly at the box office the last couple of years as well. As for Fantasy movies I think the academy could award another one although what who knows. I guess if the Potter movies keep getting better and better, Movie 7 could get some major nomination but that is something that is way down the road.
About this year I thought I read Dreamgirls was one of the front runners? It is what the media has been pushing the last week or so.

CMJ
Dec 16th, 2006, 12:39:14 PM
The early industry buzz on Dreamgirls has been solid, but not enthusiastic. How it does at the boxoffice should give us a better idea.

Not that BO really matters in voters minds, but films that have low grosses rarely win. Usually the film ends in the top 20 films of the year money wise.

Jedi Master Carr

Yeah Crash last year was the exception. Its been a long time since a movie that low won. I think it won't happen again this year.

... No Over the Headge for best animated film? :(

I hadn't noticed that, that's odd...I thought Over the Hedge was one of the best animated films I'd seen in the last couple of years. I absolutely loved it. Flushed Away was terrific too. I haven't seen Happy Feet, for some reason I'm not interested enough to go see it in the theater, I'll see it on DVD. I finally saw Monster House about a month ago on DVD and didn't think it was all that great, and I also wasn't interested in Cars at all and haven't ever seen it.

Maybe it's just me, they just happened to pick stuff I'm not all that interested in :D.

Jedi Master Carr

Cars and Happy Feet were locks. They were two biggest animated movies of the year. Cars being Pixar was a lock for that reason anyway. Flushed Away was a critical sucess, although a box office failure. Ice Age 2 got it because of box office. Monster House, I think only got rewarded because it was concidered innovated.

Guess Dreamgirls is going to be the Heavy Favorite at the Oscars since The Departed lost out to Babel. I don't see Babel winning BP at the Oscar.

The Guilds will give us more of an indication. Dreamgirls didn't win director...so it's a shaky frontrunner(as is Babel for the same reason).

No big surprises for the Golden Globe movie winners. All look like worthy winners. Can't comment on the TV series, as I have not seen enough to know.

I edited the original post with winners in bold text.

I felt Babel was a shocker because that was it's only win. The last time a film won Best Picture - Drama with no other statues was Bugsy in 1991. Silence of the Lambs,a crime thriller, won the Oscar.

Good news for The Departed?

Jedi Master Carr
Jan 16th, 2007, 03:48:48 PM
Well I think Silence of the Lambs was a unique case. It was also a more memorable film than The Departed. There is no Hannible Lectar character or chilling moments in it like SOTL. Honestly, I think Departed wins director anyway. The Oscars have been strange lately about not giving the BP winner, BD. 3 times in the last 6 years BD went to someone else. I personally think the Departed is too gritty to win BP but that is just my opinion. I give the edge to Dreamgirls winning for the same reasons Chicago won.

Who knows if The Departed isn't memorable? Let's see in 10 years honestly. Until then, many "memorable" debates are ridiculous. :)

Pretty much I think it's a 3 way race for BP. I could make cases for any of them winning.

Well I was making a comparison to SOTL. I don't think its valid mainly because that was such a different type of film and very unique. I remember the sketch that Billy Crystal did during the Oscars that year. SOTL screamed memorable from the start but it is radically different than The Deaprted so who knows. I hope Babel doesn't win that looks way too art house for my taste. I have heard people who have seen it tell me they couldn't figure it out. Also it would take Crash's record of lowest grossing film away unless it really has a huge expansion after the Globes.

CMJ
Jan 16th, 2007, 04:54:55 PM
I wasn't saying that Departed *was* SOTL originally you know. I was pointing out that the last time a film won BP at the Globes with it being the SOLE win a crime drama won BP at Oscar. And SOTL also won Director at the GG IIRC.

Just thought that was interesting. You gotta look at historical things like that. ;)

Crash was only the 4th film in 63 years that won the Oscar without at least being nominated for a Globe (the other 3 were The Sting, Ghandi and Chariots of Fire)

And never has there been 3 years running where the winner of the Oscar did not at least win the Globe first, and right now the streak is at 2 with Crash and Million Dollar Baby which didn't win a Globe either

So best bets for Best Picture would be Babel, I just don't think Dreamgirls has it in it to win the Oscar. It will get awards though, Murphy almost seems a lock as does Hudson.

All 19 films that won the Best Picture without winning the a Golden Globe first (and you'll notice the 4 of the first 5 were in years they didn't do nominees for the globes just winners, so its almost 15 instead of 19)

2005 Crash
2004 Million Dollar Baby
1995 Braveheart
1992 Unforgiven
1991 Silence of the Lambs
1982 Gandhi
1981 Chariots of Fire
1978 The Deer Hunter
1977 Annie Hall
1974 The Godfather part II
1973 The Sting
1970 Patton
1969 Midnight Cowboy
1968 Oliver
1955 Marty
1953 From Here to Eternity
1950 All About Eve
1948 Hamlet
1943 Casablanca

Of those 19 movies only 4 of them were not even nominated for a Golden Globe (excluding the years 1955, 1953, 1948 and 1943 when there were no nominees for best picture only winners).

2005 Crash
1982 Gandhi
1981 Chariots of Fire
1973 The Sting

I think Babel is way too art house to win Best picture myself. I can't think of a film that is this non-comercial that has won BP in the last 30 years. Maybe CMJ can be sure of that though. I think Dreamgirls will win, unless The Departed makes a comeback and wins it.
OH and CMJ I see what you mean, I wasn't trying to be too picky there about making a difference between the two being memorable. I understand what you mean now by history.

Yog

I would not call Babel an arthouse movie, personally. Maybe 15 years ago, I would called it arthouse. Its a movie with 3 parallel stories, much like Crash. Its hardly an alien or revolutionary concept in movie making nowadays. The characters and stories are realistic and.. "human", you can really relate to them. This is what gives the film its seat tilt factor. Babel just happens to be a very good movie which went way below everyone's radar.

IMO its not shocking that Babel won considering its 7 nominations. Oscars work the same way. When you have a movie with a large amount of nominations, there is a good chance for it to win best picture. Even when they don't quite make the top in each individual category, its still a recognition of a movie's overall excellence.

Having said that, I do agree "dreamgirls" has more mainstream appeal than Babel. Its no guarantee for winning though. I think the biggest draw for dreamgirls is the great soundtrack and the star cast. Some times, the movie with the best cast wins, even though its not quite as good in the more technical categories, cinematography, editing etc.

Btw, I am not sure if Best Picture can even be called a 3 way race. Sure there are the 3 big contenders who get a lot of buzz and won a few awards. But there is also an amount of outsiders: United 93, Letters from Iwo Jima, Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, The Queen.. etc. Its a pretty wide field actually.

We will have a better idea who the frontrunners for best picture is, when we know the nominations for oscars.

Its surprising you guys shut out Dreamgirls and Babel which both won at the Golden Globes. How typical is your group's voting to that of the Oscars? I would also say of that list only The Departed is guarenteed to be a BP nominee. I think the rest have slim chances.
Oh and you want to show some of past winners go ahead. You can just do the big stuff just to get the idea and comparission with the Oscars.
