Well I will make my picks this weekend so there will be at least three of us doing this. Probably this thread will get more discussion with the BCS games, IMO so either way it is good.

Purdue played like garbage, which I completely expected, but my blind loyalty made me pick them regardless. These slow starts in bowls games have gone beyond ridiculous.
Leave it to Minnesota to give up the biggest comeback in bowl game history. Iowa choked late against Texas.
Here comes the criticism of the Big Ten once again... sigh.

The Sun Bowl was probably the best one so far. Oregon State made the gutsiest call, that's for sure.
I'm now at 10-11(thanks to Miami winning). Looks like Layton is running away wih this thing.

I move to 13-12 before the start of the BCS games. All of the early conests today were pretty good. I watched the Cotton Bowl the most, which was a pretty classic defensive battle.
As a native to the DFW area, I miss the Cotton being one of the 4 big ones. It was for generations...until the mid 90's when the Fiesta took its place.

Just shows you what kind of equalizers rivalry games are. UCLA had the emotional edge to beat Troy, but otherwise they shoulda been killed. I would've taken SC over Ohio State if they'd played in the Championship game. Heck, I'd probably still take them if they lined up against the Buckeyes.

Congrats to Boise State. They nearly gave the game away, but managed to force OT and win it on a 2-point conversion. Gutsy and brilliant play calling by Chris Peterson's staff.
Michigan can't win the big game, period. Grats to USC on playing well, but good lord... does anyone choke more than the Wolverines in these type of situations?
At least Penn State and Wisconsin won to save some face for the Big Ten. I guess we'll see if Ohio State can make it 3-0 against the Big Ten/SEC matchups.

Jedi Master Carr
Jan 7th, 2007, 08:22:50 PM
I thought USC and Boise State both had a chance. Boise State more so, I was very tempted to pick them but went with Oklahoma, I think that was more my bias towards them in the pass. With USC I thought they could play with Michigan I just thought Michigan would eek out the win. I am not really impressive with Florida this season. I have seen them a few times and I don't think they are as good as Ohio State.

Really hope Florida pounds the Crap out of Ohio State, not that I care about either team. Im just still ticked that it isnt Boise state they are playing, and im very curious to see how the Rankings will end if Ohio state looses.

Like most BCS title games, whichever team avoids making the "big mistake" play will win the game. With the exception of one of these title games, there has always been at least one or two incredibly boneheaded plays by one team that puts them in a hole they can't climb out of. The main reason why I'm going with Ohio State is because Tressel's teams almost never make big mistakes. Ohio State is a team built for the big games... they may not always look like world-beaters and blowout the lower level competition, but they always are well prepared for games just like this one. Florida, for all of their athleticism, talent and ability to pull out close games, has been prone to some bad mistakes this season. They can't get away with that kind of play against a team like Buckeyes.
It'll be a close game late into the third quarter, but Ohio State will pull away and end up winning by a reasonable margin because they'll capitalize on a bad turnover or two by Chris Leak.

Florida answers back with a nice drive after getting good field position. Game on.
Figrin D'an
Jan 8th, 2007, 09:26:41 PM
Pretty unbelievable first half. I made a point of stating that Ohio State doesn't make big mistakes normally, but they've made several thus far that have given Florida great field position. Also unbelievable is that Jim Tressel got outcoached in that first half. The decision to go for it on 4th down on his own 29 yard line was just a huge mistake, and was an act of desperation to try to get some momentum back.
Another half to go, but unless Ohio State starts playing with some fire and Florida makes some bonehead mistakes (which could happen), the Gators are going to walk away with the title.

Hope Florida keeps it up !!!!!! this is great, Other than the Boise game, I have not enjoyed a college game this much, not cause of the game, but because the SUPPOSED #1 is getting pounded!!! Now as long as I havnt jinxed Florida LOL!!!!
Figrin D'an
Jan 8th, 2007, 09:35:31 PM
Several of the BCS title games have been "upsets" in that the #2 has beaten the #1. I think what's surprising is that Ohio State seems to have not shown up. This might be the most apathetic performance by a consensus #1 team in a national title game since Miami got stomped by Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in the early '90s.
Figrin D'an
Jan 8th, 2007, 10:28:43 PM
Nothing much changed in the 3rd quarter, other than Florida has gone more conservative on offense. Ohio State looks completely lost on offense. Troy Smith has played as poorly tonight as he has in at least two seasons, but a lot of it is because his offensive line can't block anyone.

Seriously, I was starting to lean towards the Gators(though I stayed with tOSU), but that was just emphatic.
The University of Florida is the center of the college sports landscape. Football and basketball champions. Everyone is jealous of you now...live it up Gators.

well, lets see. A team that goes 13-0 wins their bowl, and no other undefeated team and they end up 5th in the rankings??? WHAT A CROCK OF CRAP!!!!!! like i said before it should be called the BS system instead of the bcs. Atleast there was One person who isnt a complete idiot and gives them a first place vote. Oh, well have known College football was a joke for a long time, guess I shouldnt have expected any better this year.

Ideally, there should be a playoff system, thus giving teams like Boise State, '84 BYU, '04 Utah, etc, their chance to play for a national title. However, since we don't have that system, and it's likely not going to happen anytime soon, we have to deal with what we have.
The correct two teams were in the National Title game, given the system we have. Ohio State went undefeated in the regular season with a reasonable schedule, including victories against two top 10 teams. Florida ran the gauntlet of the SEC, came out with one loss in a closely contested game, and won their conference championship game against a very good Arkansas team. They were the second most impressive team up to that point, taking all factors into account. Had USC beaten UCLA, the Trojans probably would have been that second most impressive team. Boise State had a great season, but the major factor playing against them was their schedule. The WAC, while improved, is not the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, ACC or even the Big East. The Broncos had a good win against what turned out to be a solid Oregon State team in non-conference play, and the win against Hawaii was good, but the rest of their slate wasn't exactly a murderer's row of opposition (like what Florida had to face).
People criticize the BCS, and it is not without many flaws. However, it has been a step in the right direction (the eventual goal being a playoff system, even if it's only four or eight teams). How quickly people forget the mess that was the Bowl Alliance system, in which a game matching up #1 and #2 didn't happen most years because of conference contracts with various bowl games... not to mention that in that system, a team like Boise State doesn't even get into a major bowl game.
Boise State made another statement for the "mid majors" that, on any given night, they can play with the big boys. Eventually, those statements will become strong enough to compel change. It's just not going to happen yesterday, which is what most people demand.

I have to say I am shocked at how bad Ohio State played. I don't know if it was the layoff, poor preperation or just got outmanned. I would have never thought it was possible honestly. I still hate the BCS. I rather have a playoff systerm and I think it will happen in my lifetime. Although I wouldn't be surprised if I am 50 before it happens :p
