It's amazing that the Bengals are able to win at all, what with all the distractions & arrests surrounding the team:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6036512?FSO1&ATT=HMA

When commissioner Roger Goodell visited Cincinnati last month, he reminded the players of their responsibility to stay out of trouble. Less than a week later, linebacker Odell Thurman - already suspended four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy - was arrested on a drunken driving charge

Gotta love the fact that some of these guys have absolultey NO respect for authority. Especially on a charge like drunk driving.

jjwr, must know something the rest of don't know about Arizona :p I know I am biased but I wouldn't pick Arizona right now against any team unless it was the Raiders. There offensive line is horrible. They can't block for anything and the defense has been horrendous too so far this year. I think Leinhart is going to have a horrible game Sunday, but I am not sure if it is because of the Chiefs or the horrible Cardinal offensive line.

sirdizzy

I agree, this is why I didn't think it didn't matter that they signed James. The Cardinals would have been better off signing Hutchinson from Seattle.

About the TO show... My brother tells me that ESPN.com just ran a poll asking its readers' perception of the TO homecoming story. Nearly two thirds of the respondents called it primarily a media creation.

Makes me wonder whether they'll include that option next time they run a poll like that. :)

No doubt that the Raiders are pathetic, but they're bound to have some support in SF. Both these teams suck, but I think the Raiders may just be able to eke out a win. It's a stretch, but hey, I'm behind.

Wow, the Bears are absolute monsters. Buffalo does not stand a chance. And look at Grossman. He could be a top 5 QB this year if he keeps up like this. This years Drew Brees. Who would have thought that?

Edit: Interesting fact, Bears outscored opponents 143-29 so far this season.

Edit2: Entertaining fact, Losman has a 17.8 passer rating so far in this game, and he has been sacked +2 times for 12 game starts in a row.

Great bit of chatter from the CBS pregame show:

"We do."

Now watching PHI and DAL. Looks like TO stands for turnovers so far.

dear god in heaven, the human totem pole has a rushing TD, the appoclypse will soon be on us

and I have to say today was the first time I have been really impressed with Reggie Bush. That was one of the biggest punt return TDs I have ever seen to win a game.

Tannis V'larr
Oct 8th, 2006, 03:34:48 PM
Here I was thinking I was 8-0, too, until I checked and saw that I picked the Skins, not the Giants. >_< Ah well, I'll settle for 13-1...

PHI and DAL is a great game so far, and a good thing, given that it's practically a national game (http://www.gribblenation.net/nflmaps/05-FOX-L.gif). Owens is still without a catch, yet the Cowboys are showing they can be effective without him.

WOAH! Drew Bledsoe goes Steve Young on us. Never would have expected him to go headfirst into the endzone on a bootleg scramble like that.

Meanwhile, Matt Leinert is putting in a fairly impressive premiere performance: 8/13 for 102 yards and 2 TDs after two quarters. The Jets are getting shellacked by the Jaguars. And the Raiders jump ahead of the 49ers thanks to Randy Moss's 100th career TD reception.

Yog

The bears have been a monster but I am not just ready to write 16-0 besides the bears name yet. It has been 5 games, 5 very impressive games but there is a long way still to go.

In 1998 the Denver Broncos, defending superbowl champions and with a team that was stock piled with hall of famers, Shannon Sharpe, John Elway, Rod Smith, and Tom Nalen (these 4 guys will all be in the HOF) and a bunch of probowlers (Davis would have been HOF if he hadn't got injured) whomped through their first 12 opponents. Their first scare came against KC in week 14 a game they still won 35-31, they scored 401 points in their first 12 games, thats 33.41 points a game. Their lowest victory was by 5 points and their average victory was by 16.25 points. I mean they were the scariest thing in football and then they dropped an unfathonable game aginst the Giants 16-20, the only time all season and all post season for that matter where they did not have at least 21 points which would have been enough to win the game. Cmon in 18 of 19 games they put up that 21 points.
In 10 regular season games and 2 playoff games they put up 30. In 3 regular season games they put up 40, they could have had 40 in a playoff game too but with the score 38-3 and first and goal on the dolphins 5 with under 3 minutes to play they knelt down 3 times to end the game.

This was the most impressive team in the last 15 years or so (the 1989 niners were scary as well as some of those dallas teams in the 90's) and they couldn't do it.

Its hard to keep up that intesity for 16 games, not to have one slip, not to do something you did in all 18 of your games.

Then comes the questions of sitting once you have home field. Denver dropped the following game to Miami as well because once the record was gone they sat.

Yog
Oct 8th, 2006, 05:20:02 PM

I was glad to see the Chiefs pull that one out. I have to give Leinhart a lot of credit I thought he was going to have a horrible game. Although he played below average in the second half, including the INT that ended up tieing the game up. As for the Eagle game, Philly has just out played the Cowboys in the second half.

03/04 Pats - 28-4. If Belechick can't keep a teams head in it for 16 straight games and prepare them to win them all than no one can. In '04 they lost to the Steelers(who they thrashed in the playoffs) and to the 1-12 Dolphins. They were easily the better overall team just not on those days. Bad days happen which is what makes it so hard.

Tannis V'larr
Oct 8th, 2006, 09:51:53 PM
Argh, I'm really mad at the Steelers. I barely got to see any of the game, but how in the heck do you lay down and blow a 10-point lead if you're THE STEELERS? The stats from the first twenty-five minutes were downright dominant -- and then the wheels just came off. Giving up an 80-yard drive for a touchdown just before the half is simply inexcusable.

There goes my optimism for this year. The Steelers running game hasn't recovered from losing the Bus. The defense is getting winded too early in the game. The special teams are giving up too many long returns (releasing Chidi Iwuoma is looking real bright now). I can't see any particular reason for them to be so sloppy. Yes, they've lost a few players, but the core of the team is still largely intact -- the O- and D-lines, the linebacking corps. Last season, when one squad faltered, the other squads always stepped it up and took off the pressure. That's just not happening this season.

Yes, they've shown they can bounce back from a three-game skid... but it's hard to maintain hope when they've shown so little so far this year. :(

jjwr
Oct 9th, 2006, 07:08:31 AM
The Steelers are overrated in general, they got hot at the right time last year and got quite a few generous calls go their way to win it. This year they lost some players and aren't getting the breaks and they are losing. Big Ben is good isn't good enough to carry the team every week, he was protected by a great line, great D and a power running game. Take those away and he's still a good QB just not as good as most thought.

You fail to remember that since 2000, the Ravens have won
In Baltimore, 21-3
In Denver, 20-13
In Baltimore 34-23
In Baltimore 26-6

And the only loss came 12-10 in Denver, because of Kyle Boller's fumble when he scrambled untouched. Billick can beat Shanahan. The Denver running shuts down when it plays a physical opponent (Ravens, Steelers, etc.) and Jake Plummer is an interception waiting to happen. McNair + Defense = Ravens W

Denver is a soft team. If you play smashmouth football with them, they will fold.

Yea thats right, suck on that. I am sorry the question of who has the best D in the AFC was answered and it wasn't the popular answer everone expected. Denver punched the ravens right back in the mouth and went blow for blow with them and wore them down and made them choke on the ball in the 4th quarter.

The big difference is Denvers front 4 who are getting nothing but constant pressure on the opposition. This has allowed for Denver not to have to blitz as much and allowed them to stop big plays over the middle. Just ask Steve Mcnair and Tom Brady who were harrased, knocked down and just plain knocked silly by the denver front 4. Denver still has the best trio of LBs in the league and arguably might have the best trio of CBs too (the bears trio is pretty fearsome as well). For the first time a team decided to challenge Bailey and look what happened.

In 66 years only 2 teams have allowed only 1 td in 4 games the 2006 Broncos and the 2000 Dolphins.

The broncos are reminding me of last years Bears team, all D and just enough offense to get the win. Know if they can get the kinks worked out of their offense they will be fearsome.

You're right. Denver has the best defense, considering how explosive and AWESOME the Raven's offense is. Three gifts from a QB who has been in the system for 4 months. You guys rock. Even with horrible special teams and turnovers we continued to hold you to fewer yards while our offense actually moved the ball up until the interceptions. </sarcasm>

just last week Ryan you were praising mister McNair, know you are finding excuses for him. Your exact words were Ravens D + Mcnair = Ravens W

when it should have been Denver D + McNair = Denver win

and Denver stopped the Ravens running game too, and has only allowed 1 TD all season and that was a garbage time TD to the pats. Cmon don't kid yourself your team was overrated and denver was underrated

Well, I figured McNair would improve. He made poor choices. But you can hardly say any of those interceptions were awesome turnovers. Our running game did fairly well. Go look at how well we ran against Cleveland and San Diego.

Which brings me back to my earlier point, Jamal Lewis' days as the starter are numbered. He just doesn't have that burst anymore while Mike Anderson and Musa Smith still do.

I still think the Ravens are a good team, I was just hearing way too many people thinking superbowl and best D in the AFC. Denver has the best D in the AFC, only 34 points and 1 TD in 4 games. Ravens would have the #2 D in the AFC, just look at last nights game that was 6-3 tell the final 2 minutes thats too pretty good D's slugging it out.

Ravens got a real good chance at the AFC North because pittsburg is gone and I think the Bengals will find some way to stumble a little bit. Cleveland is a joke so all you got to do is beat out Cincy.

McNair will get better as the season goes on and he gets more accustomed to that offense but none of his picks were because he wasn't used to the offense, they were jake the bonehead kinds of mistakes against a good D who capitilized. The first one they tried to do a jump ball over Bailey, you can blame that one on Billick for making that call. The second one McNair wasn't paying attention as Williams stayed home and he Mcnair threw a boneheaded play. The last one was because Denver dropped a D lineman intos Mcnairs passing lane and caused a tip ball drill, that one was great Denver D right there.

Listen boys, they are both tremendous defenses and mediocre offenses. I still maintain that if the game was in Baltimore, I would have taken the Ravens and I bet they would have won. But if I were a Ravens fan, I probably would have taken them on the road, even against the Broncos. McNair made some idiotic mistakes and Plummer stopped making idiotic mistakes. It's not hard to figure out why the Broncos were able to slug this one out. Factor in the weather and it truly becomes a game of home field advantage...although I must admit, when the Ravens scored first, I was beginning to worry a bit. It wasn't until the Broncos went up 13-3 that I let out a sigh of relief and knew that my perfect week would come to fruition!

I'd say you were in last because ambrose is missing week 1 (in my pay pickem league if you missed a week you got the low score for that week, why don't we give ambrose the low score for week 1 so he can be on even footing)

Sounds simple enough but I would prefer to award him some sort of average for week 1based on everyone else's average, or his own average based on his other weeks of picking.

Nathanial K'cansce
Oct 11th, 2006, 11:37:50 AM
The problem with giving him an average score (based on his other weeks or the scores for that week by everyone else) is that he has the opprotunity (sp? - mid day breakbetween too many hours of classes) to get higher scores than those who actually got their picks in on time. There's no real punishment for that, and relatively isn't fair to everyone else.

I run a football pool and we have a rule for people who miss their picks. They get stuck with all the away teams. Some weeks it's not too bad, others it's devastating. That's my recommendation.

well lets vote on it

A. Ambrose gets low score for week 1 (6-10 was low score for those keeping track)
B. Ambrose gets the average score from week 1 (average score was 9-7)
C. Ambrose gets all the away teams (week 1 away teams went 7-9)
D. Leave it be.

and last week would be an example of getting hosed by away teams as you would be 2-12 if you picked the away teams.

I vote C, seems fair.

Even though A might make more sense to me, C is more of a random selection. Thus, a bit more fairer.

If its a democracy, you should vote however you feel you should, not how 'everyone else is voting.' Democracy will fall apart!

I vote C. Because I WANTED to vote C. Really. :uhoh
