Thanks for starting this week's thread Ryan. I've been swamped and there are going to be some weeks where I just don't have the time to get the thread up. Anybody feel free to start a thread if I haven't gotten around to doing it by Thurs. or Wed.

Cowboys and Chiefs had a good start, the other games are close so far.
Edit: Holy crap! Vick just got intercepted for 100 yards. Shame Cardinals look horrible, and Warner throws the ball like he is drunk.
Edit 2: Woah! Jets in the lead against the Colt! Could they come up with the bomb? Probably not, but you gotta commend them for the effort.
Edit 3: Vanderjagt just missed a 26 yard fieldgoal. Unbelievable.

The Chiefs finally woke up. The defense looked great and Huard look better than I thought he could play. Luckily they have the crappy Cardinals next so they should be 2-2 before they play Pittsburgh. They could rebound to have a decent season. Man Miami is being a major bust. How long before they go to Harrington?

Today was another example of why the Ravens are probably headed to the AFC championship game with Steve McNair as their QB. With the inept Boller at the helm they'd be lucky to be 2-2 right now, but with McNair they're undefeated because they now have a former MVP at the most critical position on the field.
The ending to the Colts game was amazing. Manning just kept battling back and tearing up the Jets D late in the game.
What the hell has gotten into the Redskins gatorade? That was just any defense they put 36 points on, it was a Jags defense that looked like one of the best in the league the first 3 weeks of the season.

Arrowhead is a tough place to play, I don't think they get enough credit for being one of the toughest places to play in the entire nfl (denver is up there too).
The last time the road team won in the KC/Denver rivalry was 2002 when the Broncos swept the chiefs.
2006- So far Denver has won their home game, they play in KC for the first ever night thanksgiving game in week 12 on November 23rd
2005- Split their games, home team won both times
2004- Split their games, home team won both times
2003- Split their games, home team won both times
2002- Denver won both games
2001- Split their games, home team won both times
2000- Chiefs won both games
1999- Chiefs won both games
1998- Denver won both games
1997- Split their games, home team won both times
1996- Split their games, home team won both times
so in 6 of the last 10 years the home teams have held court, and the 2 teams have gone exactly 10-10 (denver is now up 11-10 with their home win this year)
the last time they had a split series where the road teams were victorious was 1994
1995- Chiefs won both games
1994- Split their games, road teams won both times
1993- Split their games, home team won both times
1992- Split their games, home team won both times
1991- Denver won both games
1990- Split their games, home team won both times
1989- Denver won both games
1988- Split their games, home team won both times
1987- Denver won both games
1986- Split their games, home team won both times
looking at the next decade the teams split again 6 out of 10 years and the road teams held court only once in 20 years 1994, Denver did better going 12-8 over that span including the 3 superbowl trips of the 1980's
Denver at home in 20 years vs the chiefs 16-4
KC at home in 20 years vs the Broncos 14-6
thats a stat of arrowhead against 2 teams that almost every year have a pretty good team that could make the playoffs
Jedi Master Carr
Oct 1st, 2006, 06:37:09 PM
Arrowhead is a tough place to play. I would say its the second toughest stadium to play in. (I think Seattle has the best homefield now).
sirdizzy
Oct 1st, 2006, 06:48:10 PM
i decided to do the next decade, and I threw out 1982 because it was the strike season and Denver lost at home
1985- Denver won both games
1984- Split their games, home team won both times
1983- Split their games, home team won both times
*1982- strike season only played once, KC won in Denver
1981- Split their games, home team won both times
1980- Cheifs won both games
1979- Denver won both games
1978- Denver won both games
1977- Denver won both games
1976- Denver won both games
1975- Split their games, home team won both times
now this is the most skewed decade but still the road teams did not hold court, Denver went 14-6 (14-7 with the strike year) in this time and they only split 4 times out of the 10
If I were to go back any further we get to where Denver was one of the worst teams in the afl and its going to be mostly chiefs wins, although in 1974 the road teams were victorious again only the 2nd time in 32 years
if you want to know why the cheifs hold the series lead even though these teams split their home games every year its the afl days that did them in
1963 (the first year the chiefs joined the afl, denvers 4th)- Chiefs won both games
1964- Split their games, home team won both times
1965- Chiefs won both games
1966- Chiefs won both games
1967- Chiefs won both games
1968- Chiefs won both games
1969- Chiefs won both games
1970- Split their games, home team won both times
1971- Chiefs won both games
1972- Chiefs won both games
1973- Split their games, home team won both times
1974- Split their games, road team won both times
so in 44 years only twice have the road teams won both games, 1974 and 1994 so the next time by the 20 year span should be 2014, in their first 10 years the broncos went 2-18 against the chiefs, since then they have gone 36-25 in the last 32 years

The Ravens have benefitted from no run game (Cleveland) and Marty Ball. They probably won't go to the AFC Championship because McNair is too erratic and they have no run game.

next week should still be pretty interesting because the ravens travel to Denver for MNF, and i normally would assure a Denver win because it is at home and while the ravens are good they are still a little overrated and have benifited from their first 3 opponents being 0-8 and like ryan said this weeks marty ball fiasco, but Denver is notoriously bad after bye weeks
the thing about the denver/kc rivarly is when the teams are fairly equal they split the series and when they are not its the haves/have not syndrome with the better team winning both games, Denver is 10-2 against the chiefs the 6 years they have gone to the superbowl and following Elways retirement the chiefs won 4 straight games

Da Bears!!! :smokin
I thought that this could have been the week that the Bears might end up loosing. They are so good at making us Chicagoans get all high and giddy ... then blow it (of course there is so much time left for that still :p). But they creamed the Seahawks!!! There is hope! :)
JMK
Oct 2nd, 2006, 08:16:06 AM
The Bears punched the Seahawks right in the mouth last night. Would the game have turned out differently if it were in Seattle and Alexander was healthy? Probably, but I still think the Bears would have won given how well they are playing right now.
And the Patriots also serve notice that they aren't dead yet. They embarassed the Bengals yesterday.
Finally, are the Raiders the biggest joke in the history of the NFL? They had a big late lead and they blew it to the Browns of all teams, and they were at home! What a farce!
jjwr
Oct 2nd, 2006, 08:55:45 AM
Raiders are definetly sad, they need to gut the team from the front office down and start over. They should try and trade Moss now while they can still get something for him and use the pick to attempt to rebuild next year.
The Pats definitly had a nice comback, the Bronco's game wasn't as bad as it looked, the Pats D is for real, with the exception of a few missed tackles the Jets would never have been in their game and the Bronco's game would have been totally different. Course the O sucked in the Bronco's game but now that its coming around they'll be much scarier going forward.

I hate the colts, I mean hate the colts but if they would be willing to go 16-0 for me so I don't have to see that god damn champange crap each and every year, I'd cheer for them

Nobody is going to go 16-0. It is impossible, there is too much parity. I wouldn't be surprised if there are no undfeated teams in a few weeks. This season it is very much up for grabs.
Oh and who would have thought the Chiefs would have the 3rd ranked defense :) I know it is only three games but still there defense hasn't been a problem this year.

That's one of the things Herman Edwards is known for. It's a shame that Saunders left for the Redskins. With his playbook I think the Chiefs could have done some damage in a year or two, but I still don't trust Edwards with play calling or game management.

Da Bears
People are seriously underestimating Rex Grossman. I don't care what he did in college, or that he spent most of his first two seasons injured. I saw the difference in the Bears offense when he took over for Orton last year. The guy can make plays and his numbers don't tell the whole story. The offense just has a different attitude when he's under center. The Bears didn't lose to the Panthers last year because Grossman had a bad game, they lost because Steve Smith bent that vaunted defense over, had his way with them, and then snuck out of bed the next moring before Orlacher and company woke up and knew what hit them. The Bears have as good a chance as any team in the NFC to make it to their conference championship game. With that joke of division they'll probably be a #1 or #2 seed.

Well I think today teams are more preoccupied with making sure their players are ready for the playoffs rather than having an undefeated season. Of course it depends on the coach, but I would think that any coach would tell you he'd rather a SB ring rather than 16-0. If a team gets to 12-0, 13-0 I think they start to sit their starters and they eventually lose one before the end, especially whichever game the regular QB doesn't start.

I agree with that, and that is why the Colts lost last year. At least I think they started sitting players the game they lost to SD. Who cares about a perfect season if you lose your starting QB in the last game and end up getting ousted from the playoffs two weeks later.

Well Vermeil was no better. He had some awful game managment at times in KC. Actually old Marty did too, Man KC have been cursed with bad clock managment coaches. Saunders though didn't come back because he was mad at the organization because he thougth Vermeil was going to get the the HC job.

yea but after seeing what happened to the colts last year in the playoffs, if the colts or the bears arrive at that 13-0 point again, I truly think they may consider going all out for the 16-0 to keep the rust off
the other undefeated team the ravens won't make it to their bye undefeated, i don't think they are going to get past denver next week in denver for MNF
so if anyone is going to do it this year it will have to be the bears or the colts

You fail to remember that since 2000, the Ravens have won
In Baltimore, 21-3
In Denver, 20-13
In Baltimore 34-23
In Baltimore 26-6
And the only loss came 12-10 in Denver, because of Kyle Boller's fumble when he scrambled untouched. Billick can beat Shanahan. The Denver running shuts down when it plays a physical opponent (Ravens, Steelers, etc.) and Jake Plummer is an interception waiting to happen. McNair + Defense = Ravens W.

Well the Patriots are still having receving issues :)
Strictly due to his character I wouldn't want him on the team but imagine Brady with a receiver like that?

Send him to Miami. Maybe Culpepper will be comfortable again.
Just kidding.

LOL I am not sure if the Raiders can trade him this season because of the cap fall out. After the season is a different story. The Raiders are a mess, they are so bad I am not sure when they will win their first game.

As hard as it is to go 16-0, it is just as hard to be 0-16. At some point someone will luck themselves to a victory. There's too may trap games out there for one team to go winless.
But maybe the Raiders have a chance this year. ;)

heh true, has anyone even done that gone 0-16 I mean? I know several teams have gone 1-15. Actually, the Raiders are more likely to do that. Looking at their schedule they still have to play Houston and Arizona, both teams are not that good and could play bad enough for even Oakland to beat them. Oakland's biggest problem right now is their QB situation. They will not win a game with the guy they got now. If Brooks comes back they can probably win a game or two but this other guy is horrible.

0-16? Not quite sure. Winless, yes. The Buc's back with Spurrier.

Interesting facts about the 1976 Buc's.
-Shutout 5 times.
-Steve Spurrier in his last year in the league led all Buc's QB with a completion percentage of 50.2% and 7 TDs (12 INTs).
-Louis Carter led all rushers with 521 yards on a 3.0 yards per carry average.
-Morris Owens had 30 catches to lead the team with a team high 390 yards recieving and 6 TDs.
-All four QBs on Tampa's roster retired after the 1976 season.
-The Buc's scored 8.9 points per game, while giving up 29.4.
Sooo... you have to ask yourself are the Raiders that bad?

Looking at those stats you've got to wonder if those guys knew how to play football at all? And all 4 QB's retiring after the season? You'd also have to think that they were all fired from football with numbers that poor.

That Buc team was pretty bad and yeah they went 0-14, which is the most games without a win. The Raiders though are close especially if Walters keep playing QB. He has a complition % of 38% that is horrible. Although I am sure Brooks will be the QB again once he is healthy.

Lamonte Jordan wins the prize for understatement of the year:
"What happens is, everyone has to start thinking about all this," said running back LaMont Jordan, who rushed for 128 yards after running for a combined 75 in the first two games. "If we don't get things turned around pretty soon, it's going to start bringing some rain. Then, the next thing you know, it's going to be a little thunder and lightning. Then, before you know it, we're going to be out of the playoffs.
No kidding? :eek

the only team to not win a game is that bucs team in 76, and just like the 72 dolphins it was done in a 14 game season
I have seen some pretty bad teams that have gone 1-15 and this years raiders team will be lucky to get 1 or 2 wins

The Bengals from about 5 years ago were pretty close to living the dream and being winless. I hope we see a perfect season like that some day.
In the CFL a couple years ago one of the teams went 1-17.

Well Duke has went 0-10 a few times. The Raiders and Lions are probably going to be the closest this season. They both look horrible.
