Ive just finished watching Smallville Season 5 as I waited for it to come out on DVD. Oh my god was it great! Best season so far. I felt it got off to a bit of a slow start but the last few episodes were superb. Lexmas was a brilliant episode.

Im just not sure how they expect me to wait until the next series!

I've completely disowned that series now. I have season 1 and 2 on DVD but somewhere through season 4; I believe it was when Lana turned into a vampire with heat vision I began to realise something. In my opinion, Smallville has nothing to do with the legacy of Superman. It's simply Dawson's Creek meets the X-Files with a splash of bastardised Kryptonian backstory for good measure. Regardless, I watched some of season 5 but it only served to reaffirm what I already believed. Yes, some of the episodes are very impressive but in all honesty, they didn't need to have characters called Clark Kent and Lex Luthor to make it work. I'm glad you're enjoying Smallville so much but I am just bitterly dissappointed in it and hate hate hate the notion that some people believe that wet blanket Tom Welling could ever grow up to become the Man of Steel! :mad

Yeah, I can understand why you're not impressed with it and there are episodes that would simply make you cringe if you didnt just take it for what it was. For me, Lex has been the star. His acting is super(b). How he starts off quite nice and friendly then gradually twists and becomes darker and darker is extreamly well written. The humour in the show is spot on and most importantly the morals behind superman are all there.

We have season 2 on DVD but haven't watched it yet. ^_^; Season 1 wasn't at the store when they were on sale. :mneh

I'm sort of in Dru's camp on this one, AND it seems to have gone on much too long. Shouldn't Supes be in Metropolis filming Superman: The Movie yet?

I used to watch this, but I got turned off for the same reasons Droo did. It really is a "pretty white kids with problems but oh wait one of them's also SUPERMAN" show.

For me, one of the great things about Superman was the moral and ethical basis around which the plots were often centered. Yeah there was a lot of fanservice and cool fighting, but particularly in the Justice League cartoons of this millenium I saw the Superman I really wanted to see: someone with enormous power forced to make many ethical choices on how to use it. When it would have been simpler to take matters into his own hands and crush problems beneath his bootheel, he did not.

I didn't see that in Smallville and I stopped watching it about two years ago. My opinion of things then was that most of the shows revolved around either Clark's love life or the latest krypto-fiend/conspiracy. The morals really were not there in the sense that deciding what's right and what isn't is hard for teenager Clark Kent. The only character with any promise in the show was Lex, but the "depicting how a nice guy becomes a villain" thing is starting to wear a little thin for my tastes. Besides which, the show is supposed to be about Superman. Telling how Lex also grew up would make for an excellent counterpoint, but I don't believe Lex Luthor should be the show's saving grace.
