I'm working on a project, and would like some thoughts on the design of this website:
http://www.phifer.com/
Now, bear in mind that this is a multi-million dollar company.
1) What is your kneejerk reaction to seeing the design of this site?
2) Upon closer inspection, what do you like/dislike about it?
3) Would you think that a quality product comes from this company by simply looking at the site?
4) Miscellaneous thoughts?

1. For a multi-million dollar corporation it seems very bland. Very vanilla.
2. I like how all the contact information is right there, easy to find. That's always the biggest problem with websites these days. I'm not a huge fan of the color scheme, it seems sterile--professional but sterile nonetheless.

The front page is kind of blah, but the other pages with the larger Phifer "banners" look nicer. :)

It seems really easy to navigate, though I have to echo the fact that the home-page in particular is 'vanilla'. There is something about Times New Roman, too, that puts me off. The contact info just looks a little odd tacked on the end there.

My initial reaction was that it looked quite plain.
The site was quick to move through and have a look. Looked to be clear and simple to find any information you were looking for. Seems to be pretty easy to get from one place to another with the links at the bottom. I like how you have the text wrapped around the images in the articles and information.
For me, the homepage lets it down somewhat. As I mentioned above the site looks plain, especially the homepage. Personally I dont like the telephone information, but it is easy to ready and understand. The link back to the home page from the content pages looks a little stuck out of the way on the right.
Generally it seems pretty good but for me, doesnt scream "multi-million dollar company".

Look, someone had fun with FrontPage for the first time! (Says so in the source code, too, pretty much)
2) Upon closer inspection, what do you like/dislike about it?
I'll echo that it makes finding the contact information easy. You just scroll down. Of course, it's very unprofessional. I wouldn't charge more than $5 for doing a design like that.
The menus need a complete revision. Organization! It's lacking organization! It would better suit a GUI for a program than a site (though, it'd still be lacking there). The links don't visually represent any of the information they point to. They're bland. They're's a lot of teal and blue... and white...
3) Would you think that a quality product comes from this company by simply looking at the site?
I'd think it was made in someone's garage. No. I've designed garage bands' sites that have a more pro look. Make it that it's a fake company. Yeah, that sounds 'bout right. Fake company. Scheme.
4) Miscellaneous thoughts?
They should spend $3,000 or so and get a better looking site. www.ClinicalIQ.com is an under $300,000/year company with two employees and it has a more pro site.

It looks like crap and the code is crap too. I feel like it's 1998.
The layout is poor and the design elements are equally bad.

I echo most of those sentiments. It needs some life, definitely.
