Dr. Lipschitz, Shere Khan, The Elder God... all gone. :(

Legendary Royal Shakespeare Actor and Voice Artist Tony Jay has succumbed to his battle with recovering from a micro surgery done to remove a non cancerous tumor from his lungs. He was admitted to Cedar Sinai Hospital in April 2006 and was well on his way to returning home with his wife Marta and his son Adam, when his vital signs became critical.

Many of you probably won't know of Tony Jay by name, but I'm sure many of you would recognise his voice. If you play World of Warcraft, you will know him as the narrator. He also voiced the Elder God in the Legacy of Kain series, Megabyte in the CG-series ReBoot, Judge Frollo in Disney's Hunchback of Notredame, Magneto in the X-Men Legends games and narrated the Austin Powers movies, among many other roles.

When I was young, I used to watch the Disney Afternoon after school, which included Tail Spin of course. I remember this one episode where Baloo saved Shere Khan's life and Shere Khan granted him anything he wanted in return. Of course Baloo abused this and hilarity ensued, but Shere Kahn uttered a line in that film that I took to heart: I always repay my debts, and I never go back on a deal.

Though I remember him from many things, that is probably my earliest memory of anything Tony Jay. It is how he, and Shere Khan, will go on in my memory.

Oh man, he was great, really great :cry

The first role I think of when I hear his name is Paracelsus in Beauty and the Beast. Plus he was the voice of the Supreme Being in Time Bandits.

Dagnabit. :cry

Even his singing parts sound great. His voice has so much presence... really epic and ominous.
