Cars is showing some impressive legs, I think it will make about 240 and be the second highest grossing film of the summer. Devil Wears Prada should be the next film to cross 100, but after that I don't know. There are a lot of iffy movies that could go either way. Lady in the Water, Super Ex Girlfriend, Me, you, and Dupree, Monster House, Snakes on a plane, and Talagada Nights.

lady in water will depend on word of mouth I think, a lot people were dissapointed with the village plus there is a lot of competition that weekend.
Snakes on a plane has such good buzz going about it, it should be able to at least inch pass 100. Monster House is another kids movie in a diluted market but it also has a chance.
You, Me, and Depree and Super Ex girlfriend will finish in the 70-80 range i believe. And talagada nights is the dark horse.

That is a good assement. I agree about Lady in the Water. If it is good it will make it past 100, it could open less than the Village and make more, IMO.

What do you think about Clerks 2? 70-80 range or possibly inching over 100 mil? It got an 8 minute standing ovation at Cannes and Quentin Tarantino loves it. :p
Jedi Master Carr

70-80 range is the best I could see it doing.

Its too foul mouthed (have you seen the internet red shirt trailer) to make more than 80 million but on a 5 million budget that is still fantastic plus the dvds sales will be good for it. I see it making in the 50-60 range, no more.
Pirates Dead Mans Chest had a 200 million budget, so in comparison if Clerks makes 80 million that is 16xs its budget, POTC DMC would need to make 3.2 billion.

Dead's man chest is guarented to be #1 movie of the year I think. I think it will make 375-425 right now. Cars should pass X3 and probably finish around 240-250.

I have to say I'm quite disappointed in Superman's B.O. performance. I thought it was going to cruise past 200 million. And I still can't believe how popular PotC is. I was floored by how well the first one did, and I am still surprised at how well this one is doing. Unreal.

Teenagers, Depp and Bloom and Knighly are good looking and liked by Teens. Plus pirates are popular and it is a great popcorn movie. As for Superman it is the same reason Batman Begins struggled to get to over 200 the previous movies hurt it. Plus you add in the fact its been over 20 years since the last one it shouldn't be a real shock. The Sequel, I think will outgross it by 50 million.

The fundamental problem with the new Supes movie is that there didn't appear to be any general excitement for it. Can't say I'm surprised - I thought the domestic trailers were pretty ho-hum, they should have screened the international trailer instead (which i think is by far and large better).
With any luck, it'll make $190 million, though pretty disappointing considering so many on a number of BO boards were predicting at least $200-250 million for it.
Batman Begins struggled to get to over 200 the previous movies hurt it.
Yeah, B&R certainly didn't help out, but I disagree with the assessment that it 'struggled' to $200 million. Considering it only opened to approx. $50 million, nearly every major BO predictor expected it to reach only $150-160 million domestic, so I think the fact it displayed good enough legs to make it to the 200 mark was pretty good (especially when you consider Fantastic 4 opened larger yet only made it $150 million or so (I forget the actual figure)). Based on the DVD sales as well as the good word of mouth and reviews it received, I can easily see the next Batman film making at least $250 million, especially if the Joker features. :)

Well it made like 80 million if you count, Wed-Fri. I say barely 200 because so many people thought it do like 250 similar to SR. Also the reason that SR won't make 200 is Pirates. If SR didn't have Pirates in its second weekend it would had made 200.
Atreyu
Jul 20th, 2006, 08:44:52 PM
Some were predicting 250 for BB, but after it's inital release a lot of the predictions dropped to only around 150-160, only to have it end up at just over 200. I suppose it's up to the inidividual on how they want to interpret that. :)
Again, I think BB's end result is quite impressive when compared to F4 (the other big comic book film of 2005) which opened larger but ended up with less. Just helps a bit with the reputation. :)
If SR didn't have Pirates in its second weekend it would had made 200.
Probably, but that's the luck of the draw. WB have know for ages that Pirates had that weekend and if need be could have moved it (they did - a little bit, by opening earlier in the week to give it an extra day or 2).
But 200 million would only have enabled SR to at least claim 'blockbuster' status, since it's reported 250 million budget would have still technically made it look as though it underperformed (not counting international gross). In all honesty, WB really needed 250-300 million (or higher) out of the film to be able to to call it a 'success' but I know of few, barring fanboys, that predicted that high. :\
BTW, I keep mentioning predictions and the like. I visit the WorldOfKJ site and forums: www.worldofkj.com
(made of of a heap of ex-BoxOfficeMojoers - I prefer it over BOMojo personally but that's me)

I visit WorldofKJ it is better than Mojo by far. As for SR well I was thinking low 200's honestly and was thinking maybe it could make 500 WW. It now looks like 190 and 450 WW at the most. I still think there could be a sequel. It will depend on the DVD sales, if it has good to great DVD sales, it will get a sequel. Heck the Hulk is getting one and that a bigger disapointment to me than SR.
Atreyu
Jul 20th, 2006, 08:56:31 PM
I was also hoping for a low 200s result at least, and maybe 250 to be at least able to claim 'made back its budget' (although technically that doesn't count marketing and the like), but after the 2nd weekend drop it was clearly not going to make it (unless it held up really really well in subsequent weekends, but it hasn't).
If it does as well as Batman Begins on DVD though, it should hopefully get the greenlight for a sequel. :)
Is Hulk 2 actually confirmed yet? I remember reading about the possibility in EMPIRE magazine, but I wasn't sure if it was just a rumour or really on the cards.

I hate that lets move are movie trend to avoid competition. Superman just never had the buzz of Pirates and no matter where they put it something was going to take a chunk out of it whether it be Da Vinci, X-Men, Cars or Pirates.
Do you really think that Pirates has made 320 million on people just going to the movie once, no it has made that much on people seeing the movie 3-4 times, most people watched superman once and they were done with it.
It has done ok, the movie was 50+ million in the whole before they even began shooting and it will break even on the dvd market (hey even waterworld finally turned a profit). Superman is a big franchise and if you can get it going the sequels could make bank.

i just read on mojo that Pirates is the first summer movie since Signs in 2002 to win 3 straight weekends, now thats amazing with movies like spidey 2 and revenge of the sith none of them were #1 for three straight weekends
it won't last miami vice should break the hold this weekend
Jedi Master Carr
Jul 24th, 2006, 09:03:40 PM
Miami Vice will be #1. also looks like Lady in the Water is M Night's first major disapointment. It will probably make between 50-60 million total. Lucky for WB the movie only cost 55 to make.

It's funny how the headline at CNN said that Miami Vice "clobbers" POTC this weekend...aw, c'mon. Considering the fact that this was POTC's 4th weekend, winning the weekend by a measly $5 million isn't a clobbering. I figured MiamI Vice would be number 1, but it also did the numbers I kind of anticipated. I don't think there was that much interest in it, so it'll sink fairly fast. Not a good thing with an estimated $135 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
Eh, the summer is pretty much over for me movie-wise, at least until Snakes on a Plane. I was going to go see Lady in the Water and Monster House, but I've decided to just make those Netflix rentals.
And I think it's a given that POTC is going to go over $400 million when all is said and done. :thumbup

Miami Vice is a disapointment, considering it cost like 130 million. Talagadah Nights should do better, I think that will make in the 30 range. I am not sure what World Trade Center will do. United 93 did poorly at the box office, although Nicholas Cage is in this one so it could do better.

I think Talladega Nights will do well, purely because of the massive NASCAR culture in the country. It'll be a rental for me, though.
I won't be surprised if World Trade Center doesn't do well in general release, especially since United 93 didn't do well either. Although what I've seen of it so far looks like it's probably good stuff.

WTC will prolly do decent at the BO, but no way will it be as good as United 93. No movie this year will be.

Yeah you are right Nascar people will help that, plus Ferrell has his fans as well. That and Snakes on the plane will probably be the top 2 movies of August. WTC could go either way. People stayed away from United 93 and they might stay away from WTC for the same reasons.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $401,253,092
2. Cars $239,618,177
3. X-Men: The Last Stand $234,150,411
4. The Da Vinci Code $217,536,138
5. Ice Age: The Meltdown $195,297,762
6. Superman Returns $194,165,746
7. Over the Hedge $154,482,036
8. Click $135,468,818
9. Mission: Impossible III $133,501,348
10 The Devil Wears Prada $118,996,040
11. The Break-Up $118,442,310
12 Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby $114,341,263
SR needs 5.835 million to make 200. I actually think WB will push it until it reaches it, though it probably won't make it till October. Other than that it could be a while for the next 100 million dollar movie. Snakes won't make it. Invicible could be a sleeper, but best case to me is 75-80. WTC the same it won't make more than 75-80 which is pretty good for it. I am not sure about the fall movies, I haven't looked at their potential so far.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $414,013,957
2. Cars $241,979,000
3. X-Men: The Last Stand $234,306,945
4. The Da Vinci Code $217,536,138
5. Superman Returns $196,817,144
6. Ice Age: The Meltdown $195,329,763
7. Over the Hedge $155,019,340
8. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby $138,301,172
9. Click $136,511,362
10. Mission: Impossible III $133,501,348
11 The Devil Wears Prada $122,035,776
12. The Break-Up $118,683,135
So now Summer is over, and it could be a while before we get another. Invicible is doing well but it won't make 100 and I don't think Little Miss Sunshine or the Illustionist will do it. Both are having great legs but neither probably will get beyond 60 or 70 million. I think it will be a while before there is another.

Casino Royale Should be right behind.

I foresee Casino Royale having good legs, so it should climb up that list quite a bit.
Jedi Master Carr
Nov 27th, 2006, 05:53:43 PM
Well it will have good legs. I actually think Happy Feet will be up on that list above it. I think Happy Feet should finish between 5-7th and Casino Royale right below it. I am not sure if any of the December movies can make a run. There are three that have potential to be huge though
The Naviity Story, it is about the Birth of Jesus. If the Christian audience gets out for it, it could top 200-250.
Charlotte's Web: Probably one of the most famous Children books ever. I would say it has been read more than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and less than the Harry Potter books.
Night at the Museum: This looks hilarious to me and Ben Stiller is very funny. I think it could pull in good numbers.

15. The Devil Wears Prada $124,708,140
16. Departed $120,016,826
17 The Break-Up $118,703,275
18. The Pursuit of Happyness $103,746,000
We have 18 now, should have 19 when Dreamgirls eventually passes it that would equal the same amount as last year. I would say Charlotte's Web could do it, if it had opened to a bigger amount. I say it makes about 90 million. The bigger story is Night at the Museum. I think that could make over 200, I say it passes Superman and probably Da Vinci Code to make the top 4.

It is at 68 million right now should do great now with the Golden Globe win and the Oscar nominations coming up.

Saw Night at the Museum on Wednesday. I was surprised at how good it was. Wouldn't have rated it that highly before seeing it - looked like too much of a kids film to be that popular - but it really is as good as the hype.
I'm glad Cars did so well, though. Pixar is always amazing, and after having seen that film recently...just goes to show that Pixar can be relied on to churn out good films.
And I still need to see POTC2, damn it. :(
