With new interest in fleeting with the Empire I thought it would be good to have a thread to discuss tactics and ask/answer question concerning anything to do with fleeting.

I'm not certain this would be specific thread to discuss it, but I was wondering about ground tactics? Are there any tactics that a standard Stormtrooper should know.
I've been reading around Wookieepedia and there isn't much.

Tactics depend on the situation and on the tactician.
All I can say is to maintain a level head and respond to changes in the battlefield as quickly as possible.

Be wary of very large wooden horses if you fight them and you're not in Greece. ;)

Surface tactics are the same as they are today with a star wars spin.
The surface battlefield is a two dimensional arean with the ability to pound your enemy from above using TIE strikes. Stormtroopers rae shcoktroops - most of Imoperial ground troops are soldiers of the Imperial Army - they do the actualy fighting. When a world is conquered it can take from a million to armies of several million. Armor and armor support is the rule of the day and there are two types of artilldery - beam and projectile. Beam is powerful for direct assaults and projectile for your veryday bombardments. Sieges are common place as are massed assaults,
Think Franco-Prussian war. Sieges were common and so was the masses infantry of WWI but without the stalement of trench warfare. Tho - there are trenches, and things can stalement. For every TIE you bring in the enemy has anti aerial weapons. Remember that

As for fleet tactics - there are several schools of thought and everything depends on the officer and on the situation.
Lighter ships alone get involved in running battles where speed and ability to maneuver match one's arsenal of weaponry. However, when coupled with battleships, maneuvering is curtailed so they can support the battleships and defend them from their brothers flying hostile flags. They can be used as close-in missile defense, as pickets, or even elsewhere on the battlefield ina separate engagement keeping the enemies light ships distracted.
Battleships are battleships - -they are often slower, ponderous, and have enough firepower to defeat anything smaller. Battleships tactics are reminiscent of a combination of 18th and very early 2-th century tactics. Combinations of Trafalgar, Tsushima, and Jutland are the rule of things. This is the school I rp under - Desaria is a battleship admiral.
Carriers - most people think that star wars tactics would have evolved so that Midway type engagements are common place. Not so thanks to the ranger and lancer-class ships which shred massed fighter formations. Granted, there are some successes but often it is easier and less costly to let the larger ships enjoy each other's company.

Didn't we have a fleet rules list started? I remember I started an open discussion for people to put forth ideas for different rules. Maybe we could resurrect that? Or are we going for a different angle this time around?

Here - for those who are new - we use the common sense rules. They go as follows - if it could not realistically happen (were SW real) then it cannot happen here. Now, there are exceptions. If something is exceedingly well written then exceptions can be made -- after all, this is the realm of extraordinary happenings. However, don't think that a TIE fighter can shred an SSD. Padawan Jedi cannot blink an Imperial Army out of existence, nor can single Imperial Customs Frigates go about thrashing apart Rebel formations.
That said, that frigate can create some definite problems for an armada by laying mines, harassing stragglers, etc. That Jedi can hide and wait and then kill stragglers and down the occassional AT AT.
As for fleeting, we have gotten away from fleet lists and expansive excel documents that list every ship,. General positions of units and such are communicated OOC between players so the rp flows and does not amount to fifty times more words in the OOC argument then in the rp itself. The more experienced rper and the better writer can do more with less.
Does that make sense?

I'll let Telan and Khendon help you out, Lamar. I'm sorry, but I still have a lot of catching up to do.
I always prefered a variant to the traditional Imperial style of battleship combat. Most star destroyers are designed to lay down massive broadsides and to engage enemy capitol ships and possessed little in the way of point defense weaponry. They rely heavly on starfighter and escort support to handle small and fast ships, leaving them at a huge disadvantage against rebel hit-and-run tactics (hence the development of the Nebulan-B and Nebulan-B2)
In any case, I don't like broadside platforms like ISDs. I prefer missle boats, hitting hard and fast. In that timeline VSDs were very old and rare. So I used Aurora-class Star Destroyers, it sacrificed turbolasers, cargo and troop capacity, and some armor for quadlaser defense turrets, 50 capitol-grade torpedo octets (400 torps total), and speed. The biggest downside to them was that if that the torpedos were dumb-fire and if an Aurora depleted its ammunition, its combat effectiveness was severely reduced. But I could saturate an area with warheads and take out capitol ships quickly and send out a flood of TIE Defenders to pick off the stragglers.
They make great rapid response vessels with their speed and hard hitting power and have enough troops stationed on board that they can deal with most small to medium scale conflicts. In our Bestine thread (largest fleet battle I've been in), my four Aurora's spear-headed the assualt and quickly wiped out the planetary defenses :) Unfortunately, Lion lured me into a trap in a later thread that ended my losing one of them and having my flagship severely damaged .:grumble

The Auroras are being brought back. There is nothing tech wise which precludes them from being deployed here as the supplimentary component to the SD family. FSDs are still excellent for planetary operations, ISD II and IIIs for standard ships of the lione, and the Aurora as a battlecruiser - -a heavily asrmed pursuit warship.
