Does anyone remember <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_(TV_series)>this show?</a> :)

That was one of my favorite TV shows when I was kid. V, Star Wars, The Thing and Alien(s), were the major influences which got me interested in the Sci Fi genre. Back in the 80's, V was very popular. It had an unprecedented budget, and the ratings are on record among the highest ever for a TV show. Unfortunately, after the mini series, Kenneth Johnson, the original creator of V, left the production due to to artistic disagreement. An episodical TV series followed, which did not hold the same production values, and eventually the show was cancelled.

Well, for some time now, Kenneth Johnson, the original creator of V, has been in negotiations with various TV networks for a remake, and if the remake is successful, there is a script for the sequel. This would introduce a new generation of fans to the story, and V fans are getting quite excited about it (I am one of those).

I always found the concept rather appealing, and more interesting than the average alien invasion theme. For one thing, it was not the sterotypical story of aliens popping in with their doomsday machines and just wipe out everything with their laser beams. No, this was a more believable and realistic portrayal how an intelligent and technical superior civilization would succumb the human population gradually, until they had full control as a fascist dictatorship. Our culture would in such a scenario crumble, much like how the the european civilization wiped out the Incas. It had a clear resonance to the history of WW2, where resistance groups would fight the regime for freedom and Victory "V", thus the name.

This mixed with good acting performances plus elements of horror and conspiracy which I wont reveal the plot points for, made for a very compelling story. If you never seen the show, I highly recommend watching it on DVD. Even though its aging and its rather campy by todays standards, I still find it more entertaining than Battle Star Galactica. Also you might notice ID4 just blatantly copied the giant flying saucer concept from V.

After many setbacks, there are now signs that the remake may go in production and screen as early as 2007. There are now rumours there will be an official announcement on bionicon, where Kenneth Johnson and members of the original cast will be present:

If this thing goes to production, I will go :crack

Oh thank God! This is one of my favorite things ever. I absolutely loved V when I was little, and I collected all the DVDs when they were re-released.

V is so damn cool. And who didn't want one of those flying bathtub shuttles that the visitors had? :D

Also, fascists are such damn snappy dressers!

I liked it overall, the first miniseries was great. The Second one was okay (the best thing about it was Michael Ironside), the T.V series was horrible though. I am curious to see what happens with a new miniseries I would like to see Ironside back in it, if it happens.

I watched this when I was little as well; I left my DVD's back in Texas, though. My mom and dad asked to keep them as they're avid fans. =/

Guess it's time for a monster bump. Will this show ever get on the air? Who knows. The current plan is shooting the sequels to the series, based on a brand new script from the original creator Kenneth Johnson. He posts updates on <a href=http://www.kennethjohnson.us/>this page</a>. Kenneth is awaiting greenlight from Warner Brothers. The novel based on the script is due to be out in october, so there is some light in the tunnel.

My pulse raised slightly when I saw this little video clip (unofficial teaser)

There are also some related clips on YouTube for those (like me) who want to relive the memories in nostalgia. Bad haircuts and 80's effects aside, those were the times. They don't write scripts like that any more. :(

Hope they bring back some of the original cast, especially Michael Ironside. He was the highlight of V-the Final Battle and the Tv series. I wonder if Robert Englund would come back to do it?

If they keep the quasi Red Dawn feel of the resistance true to form, this will be epic. I cannot explain how much I love this stuff.

Yes they do. It was crap in the 80's, it's crap now and thence it shares the basics with so much more TV.

The original BSG was a total lump of poo too. With any luck, this proposed series would be just the same kind of "revisioning" that absolutly kicks the hell out of the original.

What are you talking about? The original miniseries, at least, was some very smartly-written stuff. I will admit that the final battle miniseries was a little iffy, and that the TV series is just outright cheese, but the original was a very chilling science fiction social allegory, which is what the genre does best.
