Does anyone remember <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_(TV_series)>this show?</a> :)
That was one of my favorite TV shows when I was kid. V, Star Wars, The Thing and Alien(s), were the major influences which got me interested in the Sci Fi genre. Back in the 80's, V was very popular. It had an unprecedented budget, and the ratings are on record among the highest ever for a TV show. Unfortunately, after the mini series, Kenneth Johnson, the original creator of V, left the production due to to artistic disagreement. An episodical TV series followed, which did not hold the same production values, and eventually the show was cancelled.
Well, for some time now, Kenneth Johnson, the original creator of V, has been in negotiations with various TV networks for a remake, and if the remake is successful, there is a script for the sequel. This would introduce a new generation of fans to the story, and V fans are getting quite excited about it (I am one of those).
I always found the concept rather appealing, and more interesting than the average alien invasion theme. For one thing, it was not the sterotypical story of aliens popping in with their doomsday machines and just wipe out everything with their laser beams. No, this was a more believable and realistic portrayal how an intelligent and technical superior civilization would succumb the human population gradually, until they had full control as a fascist dictatorship. Our culture would in such a scenario crumble, much like how the the european civilization wiped out the Incas. It had a clear resonance to the history of WW2, where resistance groups would fight the regime for freedom and Victory "V", thus the name.
This mixed with good acting performances plus elements of horror and conspiracy which I wont reveal the plot points for, made for a very compelling story. If you never seen the show, I highly recommend watching it on DVD. Even though its aging and its rather campy by todays standards, I still find it more entertaining than Battle Star Galactica. Also you might notice ID4 just blatantly copied the giant flying saucer concept from V.
After many setbacks, there are now signs that the remake may go in production and screen as early as 2007. There are now rumours there will be an official announcement on bionicon, where Kenneth Johnson and members of the original cast will be present:
