I thought I would start a thread for us to share our awesome experiences with live music, be they with internationally renowned artists or local unsigned acts. Are you going to see anyone soon? Who have you seen recently?

Since starting university I have gone a bit ballistic with my concert-going. A new, medium-sized concert venue has opened up locally, bringing to Newcastle a whole host of bands who couldn't have played here before (all we had was a giant arena and tiny clubs). Add to this a nice fat student loan and I bought me some tickets. So far this year I've seen:

Bullet for my Valentine / Hawthorne Heights / Still Remains / Aiden - 01/06
Coheed & Cambria / Thrice / Circa Survive - 01/06
DragonForce / Edguy - 02/06
All-American Rejects / The Towers of London / The Upwelling - 02/06
The Strokes / Adam Green - 02/06
Death Cab For Cutie / John Vanderslice - 03/06
Trivium / Godforbid / Mendeed - 03/06
The Feeling / Matt Willis / James Morrison / Professor Green - 03/06
Mogwai / The Magnificents - 04/06
Panic! at the Disco / Men Women & Children / Forgive Durden - 04/06

Out of all of those gigs, I think that DragonForce was probably the most fun. I think DragonForce plays the time of music that is best experienced live, whilst inebriated, and in the company of a whole crowd of people brandishing axes, swords and lightsabers. For those unfamiliar with the band, they play a highly-energized kind of metal, full of blistering fast solos and jaw-dropping fretwork. Most of their songs are about battles and being victorious therein, with the occasional mention of a dragon thrown in for good measure. It sounds incredibly nerdy – and really it is – but damn it's fun to just rock out to.

The only other concert I have tickets for this year, so far, is in June, and that's to see Funeral for a Friend / Fightstar / Think:Fire. I had really wanted to go to a Festival again this year, but I am moving out (:uhoh) in June so have to cut back on my spending.

I'm very poor these days. I'll be lucky if I make it to faire this year.

2000 – AC/DC at MSG, NYC: My first concert ever. We had second row seats. I think my eardrums are still ringing.

Sometime in between 2000-2004: Yngwie J Malmsteen (I’m too lazy to look up the exact spelling of his name) and W.A.S.P. at some dive in Jersey.

2004(?) – Judas Priest at Roseland Ballroom, NYC. Alright, they didn’t have Halford, so what? They still rocked.

2005 – Iron Maiden at PNC Bank Arts Center, NJ: Iron Maiden… wow. I couldn’t talk for a full day after from singing along. Too great.

I feel like this isn't a complete list... but my brain is kinda' dead right now. I sooo need to see Megadeth and Tool whenever either of them goes touring.

Some big names I've seen live are Incubus, My Chemical Romance, The Music, and Green Day.

Motion Picture Soundtrack came to campus on Saturday, but I didn't go see them.

I think Brand New was here last year, or maybe it was Taking Back Sunday. I don't remember. They all sound the same to me.

I've heard a bunch of low-key stuff, some local, some small name-city bands that spread around the surrounding areas and such.

I live(d) with 1(2) people in a band that just finished or are wrapping up their first album. (their band name is "One who Stayed")

I think my favorite small-name band is Cold Duck Complex. They mix fusion with hip hop and whenever they come to the university to play it's always a blast.

You mean Motion City Soundtrack, right? They were here thursday.

I didn't go. I stayed in my room and played guitar instead. I really can't stand the music being pushed right now.

Yeah them. Apparently the concert was filled with highschoolers (no offense to the high schoolers here!) and not really conductive to a college festival. I heard from some buds that did go that concert that it wasn't much fun and that the bands before them were horrible.

The problem is simple. Most modern bands getting pushed don't actually have skill. Instead, there are 4 producers that are amazingly skilled making the CDs sound amazing.

That's why the live shows suffer.

That being said, there are still some great band out there. Sadly, most of them don't get radio time/MTV airtime, etc.

We used to have a really good local scene here -- Rusty, Sandbox, Zuckerbaby, Age of Electric, The New Grand and lots of other Canuck acts have all played our downtown area.

Bigger bands I've seen have been Orgy (got to go backstage :)), Pulp, Placebo, Nelly Furtado, Matthew Good, Danko Jones, The Headstones, Tragically Hip, Finger Eleven, Our Lady Peace (who SUCK LIVE), FeFe Dubson, Stereophonics and Sloan (who I try to see whenever they play a show ^_^; )

Don't feel too badly about seeing BSB; my very first concert was NKOTB. :lol

Matt Good = awesome, esp. when he lit those stuffed animals on fire :D
