Being a graphic artist for 5+ years now, I can't even begin to imagine the amount of skill, patience and knowledge required to do stuff like this:

Absolutely unreal.:eek

I saw that yesterday.

It's very impressive from a distance, I must admit. Sadly, the close-ups kind of ruin it for me.

The first thing I thought of when hearing about how many layers it had was how long it took to load up. I sat for a few minutes boggling that one.

It won't load at all for me. Great error page though. ;)

The closeups do kind of spoil it.

I'd take a good, stylized concept artist with nice, fluid lines any day over a guy who takes a photo/still scene and, essentially, copies it with another media. What’s the point? He might as well have just learned photography.

While the close ups don't look that photo-realistic, the workmanship, time, attention to detail and computer power are staggering.

Over. Fifteen. Thousand. Layers.

My record was thirty layers, and I vowed to never do it again unless I had a gun held to my head.

I just feel like it's all a waste.

I just feel like art is about feeling something. This is just technical.

Sure it's a different branch of artistic expression, but how is it any different than drawing with a pencil & paper? No one calls someone a hack when they draw something that already exists.

Liken it to a movie - something a little abstract and off the wall like 'A Clockwork Orange' is considered a classic, but so is something straightforward like 'Casablanca' or Shawshank Redemption. Both have their merits and are worthy of praise.

Regardless, the guy has done an unbelievable job.

fifteen thousand layers what?

These are amazing - the skill to make something that photorealistic (even if it isn't totally) boggles the mind.

And it is art - it's called a Still Life, Khendon. ;)

That sort of work is really just an exercise. I can't say that I'm jumping up and down going "wow".

;) It's not a still life, it's a scene or environmental work. A still life depicts a collection of objects. Usually, the lighting creates drama and the item selection has some sort of interesting element to them.

This environment, however, is a particularly boring, uninspired one. The lighting isn’t anything special or creative, there isn’t a story occurring, there’s no motion, no life. It’s just bland. A photo of the place could have significantly more character.

That’s my argument.

Otherwise, it’s damn better than I could do if I were aiming for photorealism. Then again, why not use CG instead?

It does look pretty nice untill you see the closeups. Then it makes me think "Hey I could do that if I worked on it for a year or two"
