I am still thinking about it. The play in game is almost a coin toss I am going with Monmouth right now based on what I read in the USA today but that game could go either way. I will post Thursday's games tomorrow.

13-3 on the first day, I was pleased. The only game I was really way off was Seton Hall's hammering by Wichita State.
For a while, I though Marquette was going to roar back and end up beating Alabama, but think they ran out of gas at the end. Oh well.

What an ending to the Iowa game. Northwestern St hit a last second three to win the game. That has to be the best game ending of the tourney so far.

NC won't get past UConn, NC State is in Duke's Region and that leaves BC, aren't they in Nova's region? I see 2 Big East teams in there though, I think UConn and Nova will both be there.

I can see BC possibly getting to the Final Four. They had a scare in the first round, but they survived, and will be better for it now. They're a very solid team, one only needs to look at their body of work in the ACC this past season.
I'm still not sold on Villanova to be honest. BC is capable of beating them, Ohio State could beat them too.
There's no way three #1 seeds are getting to Indy for the Final Four. Duke will likely have to play a Texas team looking for revenge; Memphis is going to have to play likely UCLA, or Gonzaga, and either is capable of beating them; and 'Nova has to contend with likely BC, then Ohio State if they get to the Elite 8.

Well said. UNC is good enough to upset UConn, but I think that will be the job of Washington. B.C. matches up well against Nova, pushing the ball inside. As for Memphis and the Oakland bracket, honestly, against how Gonzaga played yesterday with Morrison not carrying the team, to me that just solidifies their chances to be in Indianapolis.

Yes, but they were the only perfect "big" conference. Could the ACC have gotten more in? Sure, they probably should've gotten one more in. But not at the expense of the Valley, who proved themselves quite worthy of multiple bids.
Especialy after Wichita State makes it to the Sweet 16 as a 7 seed.

Connecticut really has an easy road to Indy now that North Carolina is out. Washington in the Sweet 16, then George Mason or Wichita State in the Elite 8. Decent enough teams, but the Huskies have too much talent.
I'm liking a Boston College vs. Florida matchup to finsh the Midwest Region. That would be a fun matchup.
The Big Ten has been awful in the tournament this year. There might not be a single Big Ten team in the Sweet 16 this year, which is just plain embarrassing.
Jedi Master Carr
Mar 19th, 2006, 06:15:41 PM
Well there isn't now. Georgetown just dominated Ohio State. It is saying something when the MVC has more teams in the Sweet 16 than the Big 10 and the SEC combined. Today has been a day for upsets must say that, 3 so far, with George Mason being the biggest, followed by Bradley. UConn does have it easy. Washington is way too small, they can't play with them. I don't think George Mason or Witchta can play with them.

Memphis won't make it I agree. I just think Uconn is too big for Washington. The Huskies will use that inside game to win, IMO. Okay I get what you are saying. I was thinking you are refering to people saying they are the least liked team because they don't play hard for 60 minutes (at least in the tourney. This season, they didn't play that way until the Syracuse game in the Big East Tourney). I hear that a lot from people. As for being hated well its the standard, its like how the Yankees have gotten hated or the 49ers in the 80s or the Patriots. Winning breeds hatred, except for the fans of the team. So I can see that happening, if they win this year.

Aye, the last time a mid-major got the Final Four was 1979 when Larry Bird led Indiana State there. The Sycamores were a #1 seed that year though, so it was a little different a situation compared to George Mason this year.
Edit: Should also mention that Penn got to the Final Four that year as well, so it was actually two mid-majors in '79. Of course, most of the press was towards Indiana State because of Bird, and then the title game matchup between Bird's team and Michigan State, led by Magic Johnson.

Uconn didn't deserve to win with the way they played. All that talent and they couldn't have got to the final four. With that talent they should have blown everything away. It is just hard to understand how they can play down to their competiton. Nova didn't play well either. And now I think UCLA is the favorite. The way they played defense against Memphis sure makes them the favorite to me.

I guess to a degree, but Uconn just played lousy the entire tourney the way they were playing I knew somebody would beat them.
Figrin D'an
Mar 26th, 2006, 11:45:55 PM
As good as Connecticut was during the regular season, they won nearly all of their games by out-talenting their opponents. They have the most raw basketball talent of any program in the country right now. Teams that did beat the Huskies did so by not being intimidated and keeping their cool when UConn would make their inevitable run to take a lead or close the gap. UConn was outplayed for most of their Sweet 16 game against Washingon, but Washingon lost their cool and got careless down the stretch of the game. George Mason never got out of control, even when UConn sent the game to OT.
I never had Connecticut winning the whole thing (I had UCLA winning it all, which might just happen now), but I did have them in the Final Four because I felt their talent would carry them that far. Beyond that though, they never seemed to me to be a team that had the look of a champion. They just didn't. Despite their great record, they were far too erratic at times. To win the NCAA title, a team has to be consistently great, not unbelievably awesome in 5-minute spurts then average at best for the rest of the game. The later can get you far in certain circumstances, but it's not a championship formula.
For the Final Four:
Florida over George Mason
UCLA over LSU
UCLA over Florida for the title
For the first time in a many years, I have no negative rooting interest for any of the teams in the Final Four. I would be okay with any of these teams winning the whole thing. They've all played tough as nails thus far, and would have completely earned it IMO, not just using talent to skate by.

The way they were playing I had a feeling they were going to get beat. They could never get that raw talent together to win this year. Like Figrin said that was there problem this season. They were bound to get beat because they played too erraticlly, it was just they faced somebody who didn't give up unlike before.

Alright, so here's the big question for debate now:
Can George Mason win the National Title?
My opinion: Yes, they can. It's unlikely, as now they'll be going up against teams that are as hot as they are AND whom have a lot of NBA-calibur talent, but it is possible. They beat three programs whom have won national titles recently along the way... Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut. They've proven that they can play with anyone in the country.

Being a native Virginian, I hope they do go all the way. And here's an interesting fact: In Division III, VA Wesleyan won the men's national title, in Division II, VA Union lost the men's national title, and in Division I, George Mason is in the prestigous final four.

I think they can but it will be very very hard. Florida, UCLA, and LSU are just as hot as they are and are all playing great ball right now. All three of them have big men and are very athletic, (I think UCLA and Florida are more athletic than LSU). Also all three are capable of playing great defense, with UCLA being the best at it.

Truly any of the 4 can win. It think if these 4 schools played the Final Four 10 times all would win at least once. I'm pulling for Mason.

I am not sure who to pull for. If I had to pick one, I say LSU because the area had so much tragedy last year and it be great for Louisiania.

That would be fitting, the lowest seed ever to make the final game vs the team that has won the most titles, and has some of the greatest teams in college basketball history.

South Carolina wins the NIT over Michigan. Their second straight tournament title. Does this bode well for the SEC schools Saturday?

(11) George Mason
(3) Florida WIN
(4) LSU
(2) UCLA WIN
I can't say I'm confident in either pick. And I truly hope George Mason wins the whole thing. It would be the best story in college basketball history.

I am torn over the picks too. I am pretty certain Florida is going to win, but that UCLA-LSU game could go either way.
I am going to take
Florida
LSU

Florida by 5 at halftime. If George Mason was actually rebounding, they might have the 5-point lead instead. Florida had a ridiculous advantage in offensive rebounding. Mason was running the floor well, getting transition baskets, not shooting well from outside though.

Florida is a great rebounding team, although the winner of the other game probably can rebound right with them. Unless George Mason has another incredible second half.

George Mason looks done, down by 15 but they can't get anything to fall. Their offense looks horrible and the Gators are everywhere.
Jedi Master Carr
Apr 1st, 2006, 07:07:33 PM
Their shots weren't falling. They are mainly a 3 point team and it makes it harder when they can't hit them. Combine that with Flordia being a bigger team and I wasn't too surprised. Guess we will see who wins this next game. I think its a coin flip honestly.

Mason didn't exactly play bad. Florida was shooting lights out. When you shoot over 60% in a half it is hard to get beat.
Jedi Master Carr
Apr 1st, 2006, 07:16:52 PM
But George Mason didn't hit a 3 in the first half, that is what they did in the previous games, and never shot well the rest of the game, 36% isn't that good.
CMJ

With all the stuff that went against George Mason they still had it to within 9 with about 4:30 to go. Lee Humphrey was really the difference. Those three straight 3's he hit to start the second half made the narrow margin at halftime balloon to 14.
That more than anything else ws the killer. A team that is undermanned athletically has to stay within striking distance to put the pressure on and keep them mentally in the game. It was too large a hill to climb after that.

It was the major factor. They were within 5 at halftime. I was on the phone with a friend and both of us thought GMU had Florida right where they wanted them. Then Humphrey hits those shots the first 2 minutes of the 2nd half and the entire comlexion of the game changed.

UCLA is dominant in that first half. They are very athletic, I didn't realize they were that athletic. Of course the big differnce is the shooting. I think LSU is shotting 28% and have missed key Foul shots. UCLA is shooting 55% and hit 8/10 FTs.

I've watched UCLA several times this season. I'm not sure I've seen them play any better all season than they did in the first half.

I was wondereing that. You think they have been peaking the last month? I know they have won like 11 straight, and I knew they were going to be a dangerous team (I picked them in my final four). Of course what does LSU need to do in the Second half? They obviously need to keep the game half court because they can't keep playing an uptemp game.

UCLA is just so deep. They play like a Big East team on defense but more like a typical west coast squad on offense.
I thought that either them or Gonzaga would win the West. I thought LSU had better athletes than UCLA, but I think UCLA has MORE and are just wearing the Tigers down.

This game is really over. Kind of sad that with the tournment we have had that we had two blow outs tonight. Well it will be UCLA-Florida on Monday. Should be a good game, both teams match up very well, IMO.

At least GMU was within 5 at the break, and made it interesting a few times in the second half. LSU hasn't been in this one since about the 10 minute mark of the first half.
Jedi Master Carr
Apr 1st, 2006, 10:10:52 PM
Yeah LSU was only in that game at the beginning, and the final score makes it look closer than it really was. UCLA just coasted there in the last 10 minutes. Not sure what to expect right now. I think UCLA plays better defense, and are deeper. Florida's main advantage is permemiter shooting. They are even in terms of size and quickness, IMO.

I'm at 42-21. This is one of my better years I think(at 67%...dang that's pretty good for the touranment!).
I'm gonna have to sit on the final, but tentatively I say the Bruins.

I am 41-22, that day I went 0-2 killed me. Still not bad predicting, I am also leaning towards UCLA. The way they play defense is very impressive.

I had UCLA before the tourney started, I'm sticking with them. They were simply dominant last night... LSU was completely outmatched (which was really shocking, I expected it to be a very close, low-scoring game of defense). Florida will play well, but that UCLA defense is just insane.
I think the George Mason players finally started to feel some external pressure. Up to the game against UConn, they were a cinderella, but not in new territory for a mid-major. Once they beat UConn and got to Indy for the Final Four, they were now THE cinderella in tournament history. With everyone talking about how they were the greatest upset story in the history of the tourney, and how they had a chance to win the national title, the hype and pressure to play well became a lot more real for them, IMO. Not taking away anything from Florida, the Gators played great and earned the victory, I just think that for the first time in the last couple of weeks, there was actually some pressure felt by the Mason players.

Gators up 11 with about seven minutes to go in the first half. Every time I think UCLA is about to make a charge they miss a lay up or turn the ball over. Florida looks terrific so far.

Maryland girls came back 13 to win the women's championship in OT, beating Duke. They won it with a junior, 2 sophs, and 2 freshmen starting. While Duke has one senior, look for UVA to be a contender as they are getting Monica Wright who is MVP of every all-star game she's played in. She went to my high school, so that's how I know her/her dad was my track coach in middle school.
