View Full Version : I'm on a book binge

I spent all my birthday money on new books. This Christmas season saw the release of THREE books in three different series that I've been following faithfully.
Thud! by Terry Pratchett
Knife of Dreams by Robert Jordan (that title might be wrong)
A Feast for Crows by George R. R. Martin.
(honorable mention goes to Forever Odd by Dean Koontz and State of Fear by Michael Crichton, not really series, but authors I also read faithfully)
For those of you who thought the Wheel of Time started off strongly and then started getting stuck in a rut, book 11 is a breath of fresh air. It's fantastic. Jordan wraps up some loose storylines he's been dangling around for the last few books.
I was going to reveal what happens in spoilers but I know you people are weak and will read them. ;)
Thud! is another Watch story, and it is excellent as always, dealing with big issues in Pratchett's special way. Sam Vimes continues to be one of the best characters ever written.
And I've just started A Feast for Crows. To be honest, it's been so long between books I really can't remember what is supposed to be going on, but I'm picking it up as I go. Reading the character lists in the back of the book helps. :D

I very nearly bought A Feast For Crows the other day, but instead opted for The Know-It-All by AJ Jacobs. It's one of the few books that has ever made me laugh out loud. It's about the journey of one man to read the entire Encyclopaedia Brittanica.
I also just finished A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean. Everyone's seen the Redford movie of course, and I didn't think the book would touch me so much. When I got to the last line, I shivered. An excellent read.
Currently I'm in the middle of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers.
I've been meaning to read some Terry Pratchett, I've heard nothing but good things about him. Just never get around to it, tho.

Knife of Dreams was refreshing. PEOPLE DID THINGS. The title of the last book should have been "Women try on clothes and giggle, Rand's crazy. That's it."

The only books I've bought recently have been for my degree course - though I just learnt that we will be studying "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" next semester, so it should be fun reading that again!

Yeah The Crossroads of Twilight was pretty boring. Right when it started to look like things were going to happen (Egwene being captured by Elaida for one) the book ended!! The one previous was only a little better as Rand cleansed saidin at the end of it I believe, but other than that I think it was a lot of skirt smoothing and women trying to keep their faces calm.
Robert Jordan has a thing for strong women. :lol It would be refreshing to see one in this series who isn't.

Read that in HS decad..... I mean YEARS ago. Excellent classic that still on my bookshelf. Last couple of books I've read were the Vader novel and Al Franken's latest. I'll probably finish the year with the last book in the insipid Dark Nest trilogy.

I bought two Sw novels - Jedi Trial and Tales of the Bounty Hunters. I haven't ever read any SW novels, and Jedi Trial is pretty good so far. I'm not a big sci-fi reader though, so it's slow going :(

I'm going to pick up A Feast for Crows sometime next week. As anxious as I am to read it, I'm kind of dreading the wait until the next book. :(

Most of the books I have queued up aren’t fiction, sadly.
My list: Maya 7 Foundations (one of my professors asked if I’d be interested to work with Maya in his lab, I gave him an instant and very, very loud ‘YES!’), Calculus Made Easy (need to review what I learned this semester for next semester’s Calc II ‘cause it’s all 3D vectors/shapes and evil things like that), Street-Smart Entrepreneur, Essentials of Intellectual Property, and a couple other business related ones…
As for fiction: I put Gene Wolfe’s new book of short stories on my xmas list, I hope I get it.

I read the Vader novel that was a good read. I am currently finishing the Dark Tower series, I am on book 7 can't wait to see what happens. Next I am going to start reading 1776, which I have heard great things about.

Read "Memoirs of a Geisha" in a day and a half. Did a summary assignment on it, and I'm waiting for the movie to come out.
I'm a big fan of Michael Slade, and generally, any really good and extra bloody psychothrillers.

It's sitting on my book shelf as I type this, collecting dust. I'm glad I picked it up at a discount bookstore - I just found it really really boring; if something doesnt grab my attention within the first 20-30 pages, I usually won't spend time reading the rest.
Actually, my book shelf is pretty..scatterbrained. I have a few bios on the Sex Pistols, lots of reference books (SW and LOTR art books, etc), Bruce Campbells autobiography, LOTR, Trainspotting, Bridget Jones :lol Some childrens' books and lots of japanese comics.

I, Jedi was alright, but to me parts of it seemed to be written for the Corran Horn Fan Club.

Likewise. Though I don't so much have a shelf as a window sill nearing the point of collapse. For anyone curious...

I bought a 7' bookcase from Ikea so I'd have room for all my books once I moved into my own room. And room for my Gloomy bears and Little Apple Dolls :mischief

I am halfway through re-reading a Storm of Swords to refresh my memory. I had almost forgotten how enjoyable George R.R.Martin's characters are. Gads I love The Imp.

Tyrion isn't in A Feast for Crows yet and I'm about halfway through. His actions in the end of A Storm of Swords certainly have his name in everyone's thoughts though. :) I hope he's in it. :D

Funny, I Jedi is doing the exact same thing on my bookshelf. I picked it up at a library sale for a quarter, but I don't seem to have much interest in reading it. Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime. And Carr, enjoy the DT series - I finished it about 6 months ago and loved it.

I miss you lot too :p Believe it or not, I often wonder how you all are doing and think of you quite alot.
Im sure Tyrion will turn up eventually. He's gotta.

Well I finished it yesterday. What Martin did was instead of cutting a too large book in half chronologically, he cut it in half by characters. So Tyrion and Daenerys (for example) will be in the next book, A Dance of Dragons.
Even without Tryion it's a fantastic read. :D:thumbup I'm sad I have to wait for TWO more books before finding out what happens to Arya and Brienne. Clifhangers!!

I know I'm obsessed about owning complete series. Mine never all MATCH though. I have two hardbacks in the Song of Ice and Fire and two softcovers, and the two hardcovers don't even match in style. :lol

My collection is the same as far as mismatch goes..but at least I have each edition. I have 3 series I collect, and wouldnt you know, all 3 of the next volumes in each have come out at the same time. Feast or famine, much.
