Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Here, at my house, tis the calm before the storm as I am in charge of Thanksgiving this year. We're having dinner at my sister's house as she's got a table that will seat 26 people, and I shall be going over there shortly with four pies and Chex Mix, etc, to get the remainder of the food ready to go.
My husband is at his mom's house cooking the turkey and the ham, which will be transported in time to make gravy *yum* before dinner. If all goes as planned. :D
:hug I'm thankful for sw-fans and all the great members we have here, and all the good friends I've made through our common love of writing and Star Wars! Oh, and thanks George Lucas, for not shutting us down. :hug

Even though I'm not a regular here as much as I use to be, I'm thankful for this place, in that I still feel comfortable in coming here and just 'chillaxin' when ever I get a spare moment to myself. And for the football pick'ems.
Also, I'm thankful for a quiet time with the parents and 4 days off from school (I get to miss a total of 5 classes... yay) where I can just unwind, sleep, and play video games. :)

It's not thanksgiving in Canada, but we did go to my uncles' for dinner. My younger brother has been drinking, and hearing him perform songs from The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the car on the way home was priceless ^_^;

I'm thankful for like, the stuff that comes before me, like the oppurtunities and the challenges which are presented to me and the people in which I may interact with. These people are of course the ones I actually enjoy being in company with, thus cancelling out the majority of the human race, but nonetheless I'm grateful for that smallest fraction. Swfans has been a nice place to write for, I've enjoyed it immensely and I hope I can continue to even after I go to Basic training and that rot. I think above all though, I'm grateful for the solitude in which my apartment represents as its in the middle of nowhere, next to a house rarely inhabited by old people who go adventuring across the Northern hemisphere because they can which leaves me to their property by myself. The spacing isn't much buts its more or less mine and my backyard is the equivalent of something out secret garden. Its a place made for the old lady to enjoy but shes never around really which leaves me in it a lot of the time. Which is funny as I'm sitting on a stone bench in a battle dress uniform, really out of place for the scenario but nonetheless a paradise I fear I won't have really for a while once everything gets rolling. But its not to fear really, but meet the oncoming head on and save the memories of ruining my uniform in the rain of this garden of eden I'm privy to.
Regardless, Thanksgiving appears overrated in the decline of my society, as my family left to London while barely mentioning the fact as I return from college to find the majority of them gone. I, nonetheless, did enjoy a small dinner, making it yourself and lighting a candle and aroma things really makes a difference, even if you are by yourself.

How was my Thanksgiving? Well, maybe a little backstory first - about my travel curse... I seem to be having a rotten string of luck when it comes to vacations involving travel - read on...
I guess it started when I went to my sister's wedding in Manhattan. My flight was one of the last ones to get in before the major blackout hit. As it knocked out all the power (and therefore computers) in NYC, it took hours for us to get into our hotel room, and once we did get in, we had no lights and no water. It was actually a pretty interesting experience, but not one I'd care to repeat.
Anyway, then we had Christmas last year when we flew to Indiana to visit my in-laws. It was the year of the horrible blizzard - we made it to Minneapolis where they promptly cancelled all flights to our destination. We spent a freezing night on the airport floor, which would have sucked under the best of circumstances - but we were doing it with my 5-month old daughter at the time - not a good situation. She was also at the point where she didn't want to sit still at all, so we had to carry her up and down the terminal for hours on end. Finally they routed us to a nearby airport, where I had to rent a car. But I only made it halfway to our final destination as they had closed the highway because of snow. We found a hotel and looked for some food as we were starving. Too bad the snow had pretty much closed down the whole town - we ended up eating beef jerky from a gas station. All the supermarkets were closed too, so we couldn't get any more diapers for the kiddo (and we were dangerously low on them... :x - We only planned on enough for a 5 hour trip - not a 48 hour nightmare). The next day we got to our destination - but when I tried to return the car, I had to gas it up first. The snow also caused a run on the gas stations, so when I finally got to one, I was able to squeeze 6 cents worth into the tank. At least the rental agency let it slide when I told them my story. So at least we finally made it - but our luggage never showed up until the day we left to go home...
Next, we went to Connecticut to visit some family. There must have been a bug going around, as everyone got really, really sick. When we came home, we had a late flight and we got home about 2 AM. While we were gone, there had been a major snowstorm and I had 3 feet of hard packed snow in my driveway - there was no way to get in. So at 2 in the morning I got out my shovel and started digging. Not something you want to be doing in the freezing cold at 2AM when you're already sick to begin with.
We had to go to a wedding in Mississippi. That weekend there was a big hurricane (forget the name) that made for an extremely wet and windy wedding.
We had to visit some family in Louisville - which happened to be the weekend that Katrina hit. Granted it didn't do nearly the amount of damage in Louisville as it did to the gulf coast (thankfully), but it was enough for us to have to leave early and cut our trip short.
Next up, this past Labor Day we were supposed to go to the Grand Tetons for a week of camping. My daughter decided to pick that week to get majorly sick. So we basically drove 600 miles to Jackson Hole, stayed the night, and drove back. There was 1200 miles and 2 days well spent. We were planning on trying it the next week, but then my wife got really sick. So, that trip never materialized.
So, I was kind of hoping that my bad travel luck would change for the better for this Thanksgiving... Nope :( At least the plane ride was good and on-time. However, Thanksgiving evening I noticed what felt like a canker sore in the back of my throat. Annoying yes, but not too bad. Well, the next day I woke up and could barely breath. I checked and saw I had about 20 or so in the back of my mouth. From that Friday through Sunday, I barely ate anything and could hardly talk. I stuck it out (like an idiot) until I got home and then went to to the ER where they diagnosed me with pharyngitis. I'm still down with it and it majorly sucks. For the past three days all I've been able to eat is yogurt and chicken soup, and I finally was able to talk comfortably today.
So, it appears the curse is still in full effect. I'm still very thankful, though, that I was able to spend some time with family, and that I was able to bring my daughter out so she could meet more family members.
Maybe Christmas will break the curse...

:eek Wow - I've never even heard of pharyngitis before!
For Thanksgiving I was in charge of everything except for my sister's kids (thankfully), and I orchestrated dinner over at her house because she has an Amish made table that seats 26 people, and I have a tiny house that barely holds 15 people. So that meant a lot of bringing food over by car (including the turkey that took an hour too long to cook, my poor husband had to wait on it) and making some at her house when i got there.
Of course I forgot a few things and had to scavange in her kitchen, but she's fairly well stocked so it wasn't too bad. We used disposable plates, cups and silverware so clean-up was a minimum, and managed to get my family and my husband's family together for the meal. :D It was a fun time, but exhausting, and I think I'm good for the next 25 years. So when I'm 50 I'll cook Thanksgiving dinner again. ;)
