I'm considering starting a Rebel pilot character (pure human, don't worry) but I'm looking for something different then the same ol X-Wing (I have nothing against it, I just thought I'd try some variety).
So I was considering designing a sort of heavy fighter instead (larger, heavy firepower but alot less manevorable then an X-Wing) which is designed to assault patrol boats, gunboats and light corvettes with the assistance of X-Wings to keep interceptors away. Essentially it is a medium torpedo-bomber variant.
I'll post the stats here soon but is it a viable idea?
EDIT
This is roughly what I had in mind:

TLK-774-B "Havoc" medium bomber/gunship
Clearance Dimensions
Length: 10m
Wingspan: 14.5m
Height: 3m
Features
Armor: Comparable to X-Wing, with additional ablative plating.
(this is designed to take the brunt of the first few volleys of enemy fire, it will not stand up to extended fire for long)
Armerment:
- 2x Medium Laser Cannons (as suppose to the X-Wings 4x Light Cannons).
- 2x Aft mounted Light Laser Cannons (in a manned 190 degree swivel turret).
- 6x Shockwave torpedoes (comparable to Proton Torpedoes accept 1.2x more range, more effective against mid-sized vessels and less effective aginst smaller ones; i.e. corvettes and light frigates, not fighters, patrolships, etc.).
Crew: 2
- One Pilot/Gunner
- One Rear Gunner/Navigator
- One Astromech Droid (repairs and nav/comm assist).
Support Systems:
- Terodyne Sensor suite (75% resolution but 1.5x larger maximum radius)
- Terodyne Stealth Package (reduced signature to an X-Wing sized profile on long-range scans).
Purpose:
An assault torpedo gunship.
To seek out and destroy vessels in the patrol, gunship and corvette class range. The vessel is powerful but is only lightly armored ans is easily out manevored by most interceptors and fighters and so typicaly rellies on an X-Wing escort on missions.
Noted Design Flaws:
Rather then spending the resource designing a whole new vessel, they instead used the old ARC-170 Clone fighter plans. The systems are entirely upgraded to modern specifications but some flaws still remain. For it's size, the vessel is slightly overpowered for it's own power conduits and so short mission are alright but prolonged firefights can be problematic. Also, maintenance is light but more regular then X-Wings with complete system checks and normally a few conduit repairs/replacments after almost every mission. This makes the ship a powerful but needy addition to Rebel forces; it really can't survive long without X-Wing protection from interceptors (as Tie-Fighters find Havoc gunships sitting ducks). The armor is also only mildy better then X-Wings and so it can't take as much of a beating as other vessels of comparable class. Although it sports powerful engines, it severly lacks the flight manevorability of fighters and interceptors and so is a sitting target for interceptors (which is why it needs X-Wing Support).
With that is mind, it can be said that the Havoc and X-Wing relationship is almost symbiotic for medium and/or heavy strikes. The X-Wing uses it speed and agility to protect the havoc while the Havoc brings it's heavier weapons to bear on tougher targets.
