I've been wondering about this subject since I found myself... well... favoring a paticular stall in public restrooms. Given the choice, I'll always use the third one on the left. If there are only stalls on one side, I'll use the third on the right. If there are only four stalls in a row, I'll use the 2nd. If the third one is full I'll use the next closest without being right next to a full stall. :p

Anyone else notice a pattern in public restroom usage?

The only time I use public toilets is when I'm drunk, and then it's all a case of which I stumble into. Whichever that one may be, whether or not I use it depends on a) how clean it is, b) how much toilet paper their is and c) whether I need to vomit. The latter obviously negates the two former.

I'm so glad someone else brought this up, I thought I was just demented!!

Public restrooms fascinate me. I always like to take a peek in them even if I don't have to go. As for stallage, I like the last one on the left, but I will settle for the right if need be. However, if there is a door at the back of the restroom (like in a movie theatre or something) I'll choose the second from the last one on the left (or right if I must) and keep my legs up against the door.

I tend to go for the farthest stall from the door. Bonus points if I'm the only one in ther restroom, too. I try to avoid using public bathrooms as much as possible.

I try to use the stall next to somebody, even if there are multiple stalls open. It's one of those unwritten taboos of society that you just aren't supposed to do :)

I always use the one for handicapped people. That probably makes me a horrible person. Oh well.

Depends on a lot of variables that you can't even think about until you walk into the bathroom.

And I try not to put things on the counter, because ew. :|

I use whatever's open - other people in the bathroom really doesn't bother me at all. Of course ask my roommates, they've yet to find ANYTHING that grosses me out.

The worst experience I've ever had with public toilets was at the big music festival I went to earlier this year. In the main arena area, they had hundreds of port-a-loo's. These were okay for the first day, but after 50,000 people all have relieved themselves, things just aren't pretty. By day 3 they were absolutely rancid. There was no use in going to the furthest one down the line, because more often than not everyone had that same idea, so every toilet was backed up and nasty. Still, using them was better than squatting over the hole-in-the-ground toilets in our campsite! :x

Now, Port-a-Pottys are an entirely different matter. They're not bad if you're the first or 10th person to use it, but ...

I have to have to go pretty bad to use one of those.

I agree with Khendon - there are many subtle variables that go into urinal choice. These come instinctively - sometimes you just know that a certain urinal is going to be a bad choice... :)

If I can avoid using a public washroom, I will, especially if it's at my workplace and I'm there as a customer. Usually, I go for one that is the second one out from the left hand wall in the right section. If only one section, I go for the middle. If those stalls aren't clean, I'll use the first clean one I come across. If there's only two stalls, I check to see which one is clean and use the clean one. If both are clean, I flip a coin. Heads for left, tails for right.
