I think one of the most important elements that can make or break a game is sound. Music, or lack thereof, can be hugely influential in creating the right tone or mood in a particular level. If the music is off, or just down right irritating, it can really detract from my enjoyment of the game. When it’s done right, however, it can be the kind of stuff that you’ll listen to long after you’ve stopped playing the game.

One of my particular favourites is Grim Fandango: Big Bands, Bebop and Bones (http://grimfandango.net/?page=soundtrack) (which you can download in full from the link provided). It's an excellent mix of jazz and swing, with some Mexican spice for added flavour. The perfect soundtrack to a lazy evening. My only complaint is that the tracks can be a little short, since they would have simply been on repeat in-game. My favourite tracks here are: Blue Casket Bop, Ninth Heaven and Compañeros.

The Quake soundtrack (by Nine Inch Nails) I also really like, as well as the consistently enjoyable work of Nobuo Uematsu, who composes the various Final Fantasy OSTs.

For fans of LucasArts games in particular, you can download many more mp3s from http://soundtracks.mixnmojo.com/ - including Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Sam & Max, and so on.

Good thread.

I really like the Halo 2 music. As yor running through a perticuly deserted part of the level, you think you're safe, you load another clip into yor rifle ready for the next assault when this guitar rift flares up just as you see grunts bursting from everywhich way. They dont do it everytime but when they did use the rocky/opera hybrid track in certain fire fights, you felt heroic and grave which gave you, strangely confidence.

There is alot of games that i could mention that use the same effect. Half Life 2, Splinter Cell, just to name two, it really is a good effect to use on gamers.

Homeworld and Homeworld 2, without a doubt.

You have to play the game to understand how the music melds with the epic space scenes. There's just something about how the music is perfectly scripted with the events that occur.

Edit:

Oh, forgot WarCraft II & III, and World of WarCraft. Although I didn't enjoy the WoW quest system, the music and meshing of amazing landscape really, really were awesome.

The Monkey Island soundtrack is an all time classic. Another all time favorite of mine is the Turrican II soundtrack (Chris Huelbeck is a legend). I also like some of the soundtracks in the Final Fantasy series and Metal Gear Solid.

I'm dredging this thread up because I just bought the Jade Empire soundtrack. I've never played the game - never even heard of it until a few days ago - but the music is absolutely beautiful.

The critically acclaimed Jade Empire soundtrack is composed and produced by A-List composer Jack Wall. Featuring a unique blend of strings, woodwinds, deep percussion, and traditional Chinese instruments, the CD reverberates with over an hour of lilting, rousing, and highly dramatic music.

Here's BioWare's page for it with a few samples:

Also, nothing rocks harder than Command & Conquer soundtracks. Hooray Frank Kelpacki.

Total Annhiliation has the best orchestral soundtrack in a tie with Homeworld.

I loooooooooooooove listening to the WoW soundtrack. I have a copy iof the CD in my car, and goodness only knows how many miles it has on it (the CD, not the car :lol ). And somehow, through all the times I've listened to the soundtrack, I haven't gotten sick of it. :)

More orchestral soundtrack goodness :)

When I was looking up stuff on the Jade Empire music, I read that Advent Rising also had wonderful music. Checking it out, I wasn't disappointed.

The main theme is absolutely haunting, and the two other pre-mastered tracks are equally gorgeous.

You can download a few songs in the 'downloads' section. Enjoy :).

I'm cheating a bit since it's all licensed music, but I've been listening to the soundtrack to Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan an awful lot lately. http://dark_god7.home.mindspring.com/emot/emot-monar.gif
