I need help from the PC squad!

My daughter Gabby is wanting to buy a laptop. Shes only wanting to spend about $500 but I told her to take it anywhere up to $800.

My question(s) is this: For that price range, whats the best buy, the most reliable, the best for doing school papers, etc?

Nothing new if prices are similar to Aust. And if they ae, then if someone had a 800 USD notebook new, I'd seriously be questioning what was missing / wrong.

Generally you'd have to go second hand and I'd say Toshiba / NEC seem to hold up well. I'd also seriously consider an iBook if you can get one at that price - altho how good t'll be is debateable.

iBooks are pretty spiffy, I think. If I were to get a laptop of any kind, it'd probably be an iBook with OS X Tiger. They're not quite in the $800 price range, though.
