Sounds pretty touchy. I'm sure there are some here that can make more sense of the whole article, but it doesn't sound like something that will get solved very easily.

interesting though there probably should be some neutral group over it. Maybe the parties involved can agree to that.

U.S. won't ever agree to any of it.

If theyre so worried about spam and such, cant they build/make their own servers, domains, etc?

Classic. Start with a premise that sounds reasonable on the surface. There's too much spam. Porn is invading our homes. One group is making too many "key" decisions.

But then couched in the proposal you open the possibility for "Internet surveillance, "consumer protection," and perhaps even the power to tax domain names to pay for "universal access." Typical bait and switch.

The U.S. is not going to agree to allow their private industries to bend over for this. While I agree that spam is a SERIOUS issue that needs tighter control, creating a new group with this kind of power run by a bunch of socialists is not the answer.

I am curious if China even has the resources to "balkanize" the internet like the article suggests. Somehow I doubt it.

Then why the fuss?

It's a power thing. Have/Havenot struggle this time taken to the internet because of too much American dominance even though its only that way simply because the U.S. Government created the WWW and pretty much all the major companies that facilitate the internet and its technologies are U.S. based ones.

Nothing that the 'concerned' parties are saying they want to address can possibly be controlled by a new authority - in fact if the Internet is run by a UN committee, watch how Internet2 or something else rolls out. And also watch how any form of control is wiped out and the place really runs wild.

The nature of the Internet is freedom to do what the hell you want if you know how to do it.

The fuss is about control over an extremely important and powerful coomunications medium that's allowed ordinary people to circumvent things like Govt controls very easily.

Exactly! I couldn't have said it better.

There will never be a governing body for the Internet. Any institution that attempts control will simply become the number one target for those programmers that feel the Internet should be free.

Um, if people don't want porn in their homes, they use parental blockers and the like. Or *gasp* just don't go to a porn site!

If porn and spam didn't make money for people, they'd disappear. But, they do, so we'll be battling the spammers and nekkid people for a long time.

I like the internet just fine the way it is now, thank you! China and South Africa and Brazil should keep their hands off. China's threat to secede from the Internet is surely all fluff. No sane country would want to cut themselves off on such an important communications medium from the countries they do business with, especially not the world's 3rd largest exporter and importer.

Yes, please turn over control to the United Nations. They have a great track record of being a reliable authority for such things.
