Different numbers from Mojo huge difference for some movies
1 WOTW 21.5
2 Batman Begins 4.515
3 Mr and Mrs. Smith 3.185
4 Bewitched 3.09
5 Herbie 2.82

So why the big difference between shobiz and Mojo? That is a 2 million difference for WOTW, Batman is about 800k still a sizeable difference. Only the bottom films seem to be the same, not sure why the big difference.

I have no idea, except it would not be the first time showbiz got it wrong. WotW got 66M estimated for the 3 day weekend.

BOM estimates:
Friday $21,500,000
Saturday $22,700,000
Sunday $21,800,000

I am not sure, he stopped playing I think :(

Of course, he is more than welcome to join the game again. Its more fun and competitive every week that way.. (and I get to show him who is the daddy!) :hat

Next weekend btw (week 11), I will have to submit my predictions early as I am going to Stocholm/Gothenborg friday morning 8th of july and not coming back until the 20th of july. I will just let Brandon Gray at BOM do my picks for week 12, if thats ok. So if someone could post my week 12 picks when the thread is up, it would be cool. Should give you guys plenty of time to sabotage my flimsy lead.. ;)

Jedi Master Carr

Heh we will sure try. And if I don't have the new thread up you are welcome to post you week 11 pick here. About Jedieb well I am guessing he didn't have the time, heck I was disapointed in the lack of players this is the worst year we have had. It is probably because three regular players didn't play. Marcus isn't really around, not sure about Ryan and Reaper I guess doesn't have time either.

I'm just being cranky. I saw the FF trailer each time I saw ROTS, and it got worse and worse each time. To me, it's the equivalent of water torture. That trailer plus the trailer for Stealth (which I've been forced to sit through before ROTS as well as BB and WOTW) have nearly moved me to commit murder.

Well I think it will have horrible legs, considering the reviews, heck I don't think it will make 60 probably 55-58 for the weekend and end up making like 130 max. I see Hulk legs with this piece of crap.

Most people I have heard from have enjoyed it. I'm going to listen to the people over the critics (Read Ebert's review? Apparently Human Torch looks just like The FLash and Sue Storm has the same powers as Storm :) ).

You see I have never liked a movie that was this universal hated by the critics, besides I can't like it because of the changes with Doom I despise the movie for those changes alone. I refuse to ever see it.

About what I expected after the Friday estimates. F4 I think will have bad legs end up 125-150, could be similar to Van Helsing. WOTW dropped but it should still make close to 250. Batman had a great drop has an excellent chance at 200 now.

The way I see it F4 did like 21 and ended up making 56 but that was a very friday frontloaded film. Charlie is a kids movie which will have a Saturday increase and a small sunday decrease.

Its a bomb allright. 120m budget ~12M opening. Ooow.

Seriously though, what went wrong? The trailers look pretty good to me. For some reason no one seemed to care going to watch it. Had anyone said it would make less then 20M this weekend, I would think they were crazy. Heck, I felt pretty sure it would make minimum 30M.

Well I saw the trailer for it with Star Wars and I couldn't figure out what the movie was about, it showed nothing of the plot just a few action scenes. I think it was bad marketing that killed this movie. I guess it can join Kingdom of Heaven although I am sure the island is worse.

I saw the initial trailer during Star Wars and it looked interesting, you have people who are being cloned and then getting harvested and one finds out and tries to get away. Sounds interesting enough, problem is in every trailer I've seen since then they don't convey that, its a jumble of action sequences, kissing, etc with no real point.

22% for Wedding Crashers....wow!

Yep you hit the nail on the head there. The trailers were horrible. Terrible marketing job by Dreamworks. And I know Wedding Crashers's drop was amazing. Looks like it will be the #1 Adult comedy of the summer (not sure if it can beat Hitch). Not sure if Charlie will make it to 200, it still could, I think 190 is the worst it will do.

Yog
Jul 30th, 2005, 03:34:39 PM
Yeah, Stealth does incredible poor. In a way its not that shocking, because it had a very poor WOM even before the release, and there were some early reports indicating that. But on the other hand, this was wide release, high profile and I am guessing expensive budget, so its safe to call this a "flop" if not outright a bomb. But you know what, part of me is happy that the american audience could see through the marketing for what clearly seems to be a rubbish movie. The cynical side of me said "but wait, this is a special effect loaded action movie focused on military technology and lots of eyecandy. The americans probably love this crap.. 25M easily". I am happy to see I was wrong, and that there is hope for human civilization after all.. :)

Oh, and what does the lukewarm BO numbers the last 2 weeks tell me? Sadly, it looks like the summer season is pretty much over and there are no movies left in the nearby future with blockbuster potential. Boxoffice is allready entering autumn sleeper mode, and most likely wont spring back to life until christmas season (Kong, Narnia and HP). Personally, I think this is because Hollywood is releasing less and less original and good quality productions that folks are willing to spend expensive ticket money to see. I thought last year was bad in many ways, but now I realise this year is forming up to be quite a bit worse quality wise. Rehashing the same formulas over and over again simply wont be enough to guarantee a hit these days, and thats actually a good thing IMO. If there was a "slump" this year, Hollywood can blame themselves for it.

I'm actually going to go see Sky High tomorrow, because it simply looks like a fun movie. I'm not expecting Shakespeare or something of Oscar caliber, not by far, but as long as I'm entertained and smile, that's all I'm looking for.

And that'll be it for me until late September, until The Corpse Bride comes out. So yeah, summer is essentially over movie-wise. I too am glad to be seeing that Stealth is bombing, being forced to see that trailer so many times made me crazy because it just looked so incredibly poor. I'm also hoping that The Dukes of Hazzard bombs, because that also looks like it's just a big ol' piece o' garbage.

Jedi Master Carr
Jul 30th, 2005, 06:46:03 PM
Well I bet Dukes opens huge, teenagers will eat that film up, I can just see it already. I bet it makes 100 easily. That really is the last big summer film. Unless, one of the horror Films Skeleton Key or that one from Wes Craven comes out and surprises us.

I saw Skeleton Key last week. It has the potential to be a real sleeper hit. One of the better horror movies of recent years IMHO. Not that that's saying much because most are crap, but I enjoyed it greatly.

cool the trailer looks good so that is why I said it has a possiblity. The Wes Craven film is Red Eye now that looks creepy starring Murphy from Batman Begins (The Scarecrow) it has potential as well.

I did see Sky High today, and it was a lot of fun. If you're looking for something deep and dark and intellectually challenging, well, this isn't it, but it you're looking for a bright, fun, clean movie you can take the whole family to and enjoy, then Sky High is the perfect destination :) :) :).

Is it too much to hope that such a pointless and frankly awful lookng POS fails big time? If I wanted to see cars jumping and sliding about, I'd watch WRC, not this dreck. The TV series was bad enough.

Sure, but I know teenagers will go see this type of flick. It won't make much more than a little more than 100 million hopefully that little bit amount doesn't secure a sequel. And I thought the same thing about F4 and that made more money that I wanted it to.

K now here is the thing, CMJ is the closest to a movie that I have seen in a long time, he is 70 thousand off. Here is the difference
21.422
21.490
I think I came about 100 thousand from a movie once this year but nobody has come closer since I installed the price is right rule, so for that I am rewarding him the bonus prize I think I set it as 50 (if there is a disagreement with that we can fix it). Yoghurt you have any problems with that? It would make the contest incredilby close the last weekend. I just figured that is the closest I seen somebody get since before we put that rule in place (I remember JMK getting that close once before it).

Well I have been dreading doing but I am conceding you won Yog. I know you won all 5 movies. I could calculate the points but it would show up that way. I guess I have been putting this off for several reasons, time, I have been very busy with work and stuff, second disapointment not just the fact that I lost but that it was a disapointing year in only 4 of us participated for more than 2 weeks.
Now I guess it is hard for people to it takes time, and you have to keep up with and I understand that. But I honestly probably won't be doing it again. I really might not have time next year for various reasons anyways, but I won't stop anybody else from doing it go for it if you want to, maybe you will have better luck than me.
Now I want to congratulate Yoghurt you won you have beatest us several times at this and I have to say you are the best at it. Sometimes, I don't know how you do it. Finally, I want to say overall the last few years doing has been fun, I enjoyed it until the latter part of this summer. As you have noticed I stopped making new threads and got real lazy and just continued this one and I stopped even changing the title. Some of it was time and the rest was that nobody was playing. Still, it was a blast to do and I don't regret it. So Congrats Yoghurt you are defintely the best at the box office contest.

Thanks Carr and CMJ for the kind words. I know what you mean about time. This year, I have not had the time to do the kind of research and calculations I did in previous years on the movies, and sometimes, maybe that show. But I have to say this: Even though only 3 people played all the way to the end, you two really gave me a hard time with some extremely accurate predictions. Your picks were rarely much off from the final numbers, which show you do know your stuff when it comes to Box Office. I was saying to myself "do I go higher or do you go lower?".

Before the last weekend, I did not think highly of my chances to win, and honestly had a whole deal of luck. Only thing I knew was that I needed one heck of a streak to make up for the 90 point difference. I could easily gone lower on "40 year old Virgin" and then you would be the winner, regardless of the results of the other movies. Basically, I said to myself, "I undercut it last week, and I will be darned if I do it again!". I overpredicted that one with mere $15K.

Thanks for the good sportsmanship and good competitive spirit, keeping it going all the way through the summer. Previous years, I felt like I had some level of control, but this year, I was like "Holy crap! I better shape up, or they will beat the crap out of me!" You had me up against the wall on this one :)

As for future contests, I agree there should have been more people playing. And the current format takes a lot of time and energy out of the participants I guess. But that does not mean we should stop talking about box office. Maybe instead of full contests, we could have prediction threads like "what will be the top 5 christmas movies" what will be their opening/final gross etc.

I am pondering what will be the top movies next year. Superman and Da Vinci Code will be huge next summer. Then there are a whole lot of sequels, X-men 3, Pirates of Carribean 2, The Fast and the Furious 3, Mission Impossible 3 etc.

Ok I could go for this, we would have to come up with something maybe just make general threads and talk about what will will rule the holiday season or summer. That is easier and just as fun.
