When the wind howled, icy fingers swept through Nox's soaking hair and he gasped. The sharp tingling sensation on his scalp trickled down through his body much like the droplets of rain running through his drenched clothes. He shuddered and opened his eyes. A tear slid down his cheek and mingled with water freckles. He sniffed so hard there was a thick snort and it hurt his head. His hands wrapped around a wet railing and he lurched forward, spitting into the air. A strong gust of wind whipped the glob of spittle to one side and it veered off course; Nox watched it fall further and further until it dissapeared into the black bowels of Nar Shaddaa.

No longer could he stare into the dark depths, his eyes were red and sore, so instead he looked down at his hands. They were a pale shade of blue, except the knuckles were a strange mixture of pink and white and small specks of red sneaked through from under his thumbs and forefingers. He released his grip on the railing and turned his hands upwards. His palms were an odd shade of deep pink, it looked a little like paint and ran when the rain landed on it. In every line and contour of his palms and fingers was a strong accent of red, it was dry and crusted. It made him swallow and close his eyes tight again.

Earlier, Nox had left his home, and started to walk. In his neighbourhood, the streets were empty and black, and the wind whistled quietly through the alleys. There were no signs and noone to ask for directions, but Nox kept on walking. Up and up and up he went, climbing the skeleton of the smuggler's moon, moving from one street to the next. On his way, he saw many different elements of nightlife; a drunk, a begger, a hooker, a murder; all spattered on the neon light canvas of Nar Shaddaa. Over the pounding of the rain were sounds of blaster fire, music, shouting, laughing, crying and moaning. Once, an old woman, getting warm by a fire in a rubbish bin, offered Nox her coat to keep himself dry. He simply shook his head and moved on.

That had been an hour ago. Now, Nox took one last look over the precipice at the peak of the the city and pulled himself up. The wet metal of the railing squeaked beneath his feet as he stood upright. He closed his eyes and with a deep breath waited for the next howl of wind to shift him off balance so he could be lost into the dark void below and be rid of the feelings tearing up his soul.

Ambience. A mesh of noises, twisting into one solid sound. So subtle it was, one rarely made notice of it. In the cool night air, this was all the galaxy was. Though bustling with activity, one could give little notice to any one thing. Rarely, something could stand out quite like this.

It was a feeling, an energy almost. It couldnt be touched, heard or seen, but was as real as any other sensation. It rose above all else, soaring and subsided rapidly and repeatedly, becoming more intense with each passing second, until finally peaking into what could only be described as incredible. It began to move, slowly finding its way through the desolate corridors of Nar Shaddaa, as if parading itself to the rabble that resided there, finally finding the end of its journey on a small catwalk, high above where it just was.

As Nox stared into the icy darkness that awaited him, it seemed to almost return his gaze, and for a brief moment, he could feel the shadows surrounding him, and the wind gently whispered.

"Nox..."

His eyes opened and he looked down. He gasped, his entire body losing balance as he wobbled on the narrow strip of metal overlooking the black chasm. His arms rotating desperately against the gusts of wind until finally, he mustered enough momentum to cast himself backwards.

The metal catwalk clanged beneath him. For a moment, he laid still against the cold durasteel, his chest heaving with deep breaths. Above him the stars winked mischievously in the gloom of the night sky. Slowly, and painfully, he climbed to his feet.

His hands, trembling, held onto the railing for support as he looked all around. He had climbed fences and snuck past security to reach this place, a labrynth of rickety catwalks joining Nar Shaddaa's highest and loneliest peaks. There was noone here but him, but he had heard something. He had heard a voice.

Nox could feel a certain curiousity in the air, as if the night itself had spoken to him, and was now awaiting a response. The shadows, which had previously enshrouded him had resided and now formed a rough circle around him, like someone was holding a dim spotlight on him from an intangible perch far above.

In the darkness in front of Nox, he could almost imagine the form of a person staring at him.
