I've been tweaking with this idea for a little while now, and I've just now gotten back into drawing. Pretty much, I'm trying to go for a little more stylized, comic, and nonsense sort of look for Sanis and Cirr. The problem? I'm pretty crap with any kind of production-caliber art anyway, and I usually end all my pieces in frustration, with scribbles, tearing up the paper, burning, etc and asking Christin to do it all for me.

I've been bitten by the inspiration bug, and I'm really trying to stay on task with this. So take a look at this demo and critique at will. Mind you, this image was made by snapping a shot with my digital camera and cropping in paint. Don't be "too" critical of that aspect of it ;)

Sanis screams Gorrilaz and that's great. I think Sanis has more character in the way he looks compared to Cirr but I love the way you've made Cirr look. In my humble artistic opinion, all in all I'd say you've done a great job with drawing your characters.

I love the mental image I have when Cirr is miserable or sad and his ears really droop. I'd like to see your artistic impression of that sketched sometime. :)

I like them. Only, Cirr's arms are just sticking off the top of his body.

Maybe the arms are laying away from the torso, instead of against it? If so, that's something I'm working on correcting for the revisions :)

I like it too - being unable to draw a stick, I think its rather clever.

The only thing I would say is that Cirr looks a little agro to me. Im used to picturing him in a more amenable expression.

Bingo. Keeping the shoulder lines parallel or above the jawline is a good way to show mass.

I understand what Holly meant, and I agree with her. Even when doing cartooning, you still want to adhere to - however loosely - 'form follows function'. The right shoulder joint and the right side of his shirt give the appearence that his shoulder is a bit misplaced, but that can easily be fixed by moving the right 'shirt line' over a little more so that his arm looks more to be in front.

That being said, I like them alot :) They may have started out looking Gorillaz-esque, but I think you're starting to get your own style with them.

Yeah I talked to Tea-San about it and he said more or less the same, that since he's got mass like that, the arms should really rest against the body if they're relaxed.

Thanks man :)

It really is a big help in being able to help me plan where certain lines fall. I'm always getting in trouble of drawing a section and having something else supposed to overlap in that exact spot. Also, I'm terrible at body proportion, so its always good to be able to have a preconceived notion of where it all falls.

Cirr's got a neat expression, and Daani is much improved from the last drawing. Changing her shirt helped.

<img src=http://panicked.org/sa/sketch18.jpg>

I did some profile work, just to make sure I had more or less perfected each character's facial roadmap. Sanis is almost exactly where I want him to be. Cirr is just slightly behind, and Daani is getting there, but probably will see a few changes before she's in her distilled form.

Christin teaches gud. She helped me quite a bit with forming my skeletons, and how to generally arrange a layout.

Hey, got some contraposto going on with Sanis in the middle picture there. I think that's your most natural and relaxed pose yet; I like it a lot. Keep working with those skeletons.

Profiles are looking nice. I do like how Daani turned out. I think it would help Cirr's overall facial structure if his eyes were closer to the centerline between his jaw and the top of his head; they're a bit too high, and that throws the forehead and upper skull out of whack. I do like the personalities you've got going here.

Errryeah, except that he's got roughly a size one waist in that shot. I shouldn't have cut the back of his jacket so far in, or at least started it farther back on his arm a touch.

Yeah, Cirr's eyes float high on that one. I'll cut a better one in a second.

Give me some backstory on her :) Her likes and dislikes, and what she might do with her free time.

I was thinking that she'd become Layla's gunner because of...oh...natural videogame skills?

Lilaena De'Ville
Jun 23rd, 2005, 10:58:10 PM
She's the youngest daughter of a doting mother who obsesses about DETAILS and small things. I'd think that she's got a natural ability to sneak around and be unseen when she wants to. I don't think a small girl would fit right into a gunners seat, but if you want, that can be part of the backstory that she's a videogame nut.

Its hard, because in the other 'Fans, she was only like 6.

Maybe down the road. I've got a lot to do before I'm that comfortable with this style.

MORE CRAP!!!

http://panicked.org/sa/sketch21.jpg

Shot of Sanis from the back. I've never drawn a character from behind, so this was all very new. The eyes are crap, and I wasn't sure what to do with the fold of the jacket that went over his holster. Also, drawing the backs of feet is strange.

http://panicked.org/sa/sketch22.jpg

My first composite shot of Sanis, Cirrsseeto, and Daanarri. Looks like a fun night. The poses in these were all over the place, so my mileage varies. I know the perspective issues with Sanis make him look like he's lying uphill or something. I'll sort that out later.

Cirr's half-hearted kegstand was fun to do :)
