College Bowl Game Pick 'Em

[Figrin D'an]

Like the NFL Pick 'Em, this has become a tradition of sorts. The rules are esssentially the same as the NFL counterpart: Each Bowl game matchup is listed below. To participate, simply select the winner of each game by placing a (W) next to the team in the matchup. The Bowl season begins on December 14th and concludes with the national championship game on January 4th. To break a potential tie in the contest, each person is also asked to predict the final score of the Orange Bowl (the national title game) as well as picking the winner. North Texas has the running game to dominate the clock. Jamario Thomas didn't get much press this year because of other fab freshmen RBs like Adrian Peterson and Michael Hart, but he's a fantastic young back.


Champs Sports Bowl
Syracuse vs. Georgia Tech (W)

If Reggie Ball avoids turnsovers, he'll get enough big plays to Calvin Johnson to win the game. The Syracuse secondary can be thrown on. It will be interesting to see if Diamond Ferri plays both ways for 'Cuse in this game like he did in their big win over Boston College.


GMAC Bowl
Memphis vs. Bowling Green (W)

Will be a shootout. Omar Jacobs and DeAngelo Williams give the game plenty of playmaking power for the offenses.


Fort Worth Bowl
Cincinnati (W) vs. Marshall

If Gino Guidugli is healthy, he'll light up a suspect Marshall defense. Stan Hill and Josh Davis might to the same to the Bearcat D, but the Cincy defense has at least stopped some teams on occasion this year.


Las Vegas Bowl
UCLA (W) vs. Wyoming

The Bruins took #1 USC down to the wire. That's good enough for me.


Hawaii Bowl
Hawaii (W) vs. UAB

UAB... first ever bowl game. Hawaii... playing at home. 'Nuff said.


MPC Computers Bowl
Fresno State (W) vs. Virginia

Virgina will have trouble getting up for this game, after falling apart late in what could have been a very good season. Fresno State loves playing against teams from major conferences.


Motor City Bowl
Toledo (W) vs. Connecticut

QB battle. Almost like a home game for Toledo, though, and UConn, like UAB, is playing in it's first ever bowl game.


Independence Bowl
Iowa State vs. Miami (Ohio) (W)

Iowa State's defense kept them in games all season, but it's been a while since they have faced an offense like what Redhawks brings to the table.


Insight Bowl
Oregon State (W) vs. Notre Dame

The Irish are in disarray, and, reportedly, almost voted to not play in a bowl game after Willingham got fired. Oregon State had a rough season, but are more battle-tested from a very tough schedule.


Houston Bowl
Colorado vs. UTEP (W)

Gary Barnett and Mike Price are to be commended for the coaching jobs they did this year. UTEP was a joke before Price arrived, and Colorado could have rolled over and died after the offseason scandal. That said, UTEP has been on a roll, while Colorado got completely annihilated by Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game.


Alamo Bowl
Ohio State (W) vs. Oklahoma State

Will the real OSU please stand up? The Buckeyes found their offense late in the season, opening up the passing game. Oklahoma State has an iffy pass defense, and even though Vernand Morency is a good RB, the Buckeyes defense can contain him. Don't bet against Jim Tressel in a bowl game.


Continental Tire Bowl
Boston College (W) vs. North Carolina

As long as Paul Peterson is healthy, BC will start it's ACC campaign early by beating a resurgent UNC team. Tom O'Brien is another coach who is money in postseason play.


Emerald Bowl
Navy (W) vs. New Mexico

The Midshipmen go to their second consecutive bowl game, and after getting torched by Texas Tech last year, they'll be up for this one. New Mexico has had a good season, but Navy will simply want this one more.


Holiday Bowl
Texas Tech vs. Cal (W)

Cal will be favored, and has more talent than Texas Tech, but the question will be if they are up for the game. The Bears are devistated that they didn't get the Rose Bowl bid, and were clearly upset that Texas jumped over them in the standings. (Cal QB Aaron Rodgers even called Texas head coach Mack Brown "classless" for his lobbying for votes). I'll still take Cal to win, but if they aren't ready for the game, the Red Raiders have enough offense to pull a huge upset.


Silicon Valley Bowl
Northern Illinois (W) vs. Troy

NIU has the nations leading scorer (RB Garrett Wolfe). Troy has a good running game, too, but NIU has more balance and versatility.


Music City Bowl
Alabama (W) vs. Minnesota

The unstoppable force (Gopher RBs Marion Barber III and Lawrence Moroney) against the immovable object (the Crimson Tide defense). Strength on strength. Minnesota had issues down the stretch of the season (again). Bama, despite losing to #3 Auburn, proved that their defense can keep them in games against teams with great running backs.


Sun Bowl
Arizona State vs. Purdue (W)

The Sun Devils will be without QB Andrew Walter, and has been shaky on defense at times. Kyle Orton is healthy again, and returned to form late in the season. Both teams have scoring ability, but Purdue's defense, while young, is faster and more athletic. As long as the Boilers don't start off slow (as they have been known to do in bowl games), I'm predicting a big win.


Liberty Bowl
Louisville (W) vs. Boise State

This game will have an over/under of about 110. Both teams will score, and score often, but Louisville will score more. They've beaten major conference teams, and are really just a couple of plays away from being undefeated.


Peach Bowl
Miami vs. Florida (W)

The state championship of Florida is on the line (both teams beat Florida State this season). This is actually a pretty nasty rivalry. The 'Canes let a chance to win the ACC title, at home, slip through their fingers. The Gators have a cause to play for, and will use this as a springboard for their '05 season, the first under Urban Meyer.


Outback Bowl
Georgia (W) vs. Wisconsin

Georgia may have been overrated at the beginning of the season, but they're still a very good team. Wisconsin started hot, and skidded at the end of the season. Lots of talent on both sides, but Georgia has a bit more.

Cotton Bowl
Texas A&M vs. Tennessee (W)

This game is kind of a toss up. A&M will be able to throw against the Volunteer secondary, but Tennessee has a solid running game that they will rely on. The Aggie D has given up big plays at times during the year, and although Rick Clausen is the Vols third-string QB, he can still get the ball to his receivers. Close game either way.


Gator Bowl
West Virginia vs. Florida State (W)

West Virginia had flashes of brilliance this season, even when they started to struggle in their last few games... they just lacked consistency. Florida State's defense will keep this to a low scoring game, and their athletes will win it for them.


Capital One Bowl
Iowa (W) vs. LSU

This should be a great game. Every year, no matter how many players he losses, Kirk Ferentz finds ways to maximize the talent he has and win games. They were severely undermanned this season, yet still managed to grab a share of the Big Ten title. LSU got things together after a shaky start, and finished up the season strong. This might have been Nick Saban's best coaching job yet. Both teams finished the season strong. Another close one, but I think Iowa will find a way to win yet again.


Rose Bowl
Michigan (W) vs. Texas

Texas will be ready to play, excited about their first BCS bowl berth. Michigan finished the season on a slight down note, losing to arch rival Ohio State and somewhat backing their way into the Big Ten title. It sounds like a setup for Texas to win big. But I don't think so. Texas has a great running game, and a good defense, but Michigan can match the defense and has more offensive balance. If Michigan gets an early lead, which I think they will, the Longhorns don't have the big play ability to catch up.


Fiesta Bowl
Utah vs. Pittsburgh (W)

I know... you think I'm crazy. Pittsburgh over Utah? The crappy Big East team against the undefeated BCS buster from the Mountain West. Well... Pittsburgh has played better down the stretch than most people realize. They have a high powered offense that can score with the Utes. They'll also be out to prove that they belong, after all of the flak they are taking in the media. Utah, while likely the better overall team, has a lot of distractions to battle over the next month. Their head coach is leaving for Florida. Both of their coordinators are interviewing for head coaching jobs. Nobody knows for sure who will be the head coach on the sidelines for this game, and who will be heading up the offensive and defensive units. Utah also has all the pressure on them of being that first non-BCS team to break into the big bowl games. Everyone wants to see if the mid-majors really deserve to play in a BCS game. Big time pressure on the Utes plus their coaching situation + Pittsburgh flying in under the radar = Big Upset.


Sugar Bowl
Auburn (W) vs. Virginia Tech

Tommy Tuberville will need one really great motivational speech to get his players ready for this game. They did everything they could... go 12-0, win the SEC... yet they won't have a chance to play for the national title. This game won't be a pushover either. Virginia Tech played some of the best football in the nation over the last month. Auburn will go throught he motions in the first half, maybe even trail at halftime, but will wake up and win a close, hard fought game with a late score. This will definitely be a battle in the trenches.


Orange Bowl
USC (W) vs. Oklahoma

For all the complaints about how the BCS screwed Auburn and Cal, ultimately, it did the only thing it ever really promised to do... make sure #1 and #2 face off in a bowl game. One can argue about who those two teams should be, but that's something that is hardly specific to this season. It's a flawed system, but it's better than the old Bowl Alliance. Eventually, it will improve. It just takes time. The BCS is one step in that process.

As for the game itself... this has the potential to be the best national title game since the BCS started. It's the first time that the two teams expected to get there before the season starts... actually do. USC and OU were the juggernauts... the kings of the college football world expected to clash at the end of the season. And, it's going to happen. Both teams have things to prove. The Trojans wants to show that their shared title from last year is legit. The Sooners want to wash away the bad taste left from last season, losing the Big 12 title to Kansas State and the national title to LSU. Both have great talent, big playmakers on both sides of the ball, and top notch coaching.

IMO, the game will come down to two specific factors. Can Oklahoma slow down Reggie Bush, and which QB will make some big plays downfield. The answers: No and Both. In college football, speed kills. The Sooners are fast. The Trojans are faster. My prediction: Reggie Bush will set himself up to be the early favorite for the Heisman next season. Both Leinart and White will make plays in the passing game, but Bush outperforms Peterson and leads USC to a consensus national title. I'll post my score prediction a few days before the game.

Dude...we won our conference the last 4 years. ;)

It's not like we haven't won the NO Bowl before. We won 2 years ago - against the CUSA co-champs. Last year the Memphis game was pretty competitive(lost by 10, but I thought it was a bit closer than the score indicated).

Hell...even though they beat us 51-21 I felt like we played much better versus Colorado. USM just f'n drilled us.

The difference in time between their last games made a big difference in this one. NT had 26 days since their last game, with only 10 for Southern Miss. That postponed game against Cal might have been a blessing in disguise, as it kept them fresh and more in game-shape mentally. They certainly seemed much more into the game than NT did.

Agreed.

I felt USC would win the Orange Bowl, but not like this. I never imagined it would be such a beatdown. The Trojans are establishing themselves as one of the great champions in college football history.

The question now is... is there really that much of a gap between USC and OU, or is it just one of those nights in which one teams does everything right and gets all the breaks?

Wow... complete domination. The game was over midway through the second quarter, but USC didn't let up until, really, about 6 minutes left in the game.

The game turned on one play... the mistake by Bradley to field the USC punt when he was surrounded by Trojan defenders. That was a catastophic error on his part, and when USC turned that mistake into a touchdown, the Sooners seemed to lose their edge. I'm sure memories of last season started to creep into their minds, and as soon as that happened, USC won.

The Trojans return 16 starters next season, and if Matt Leinart returns for his senior year, as he said he will, they'll be preseason #1 again next year, and the overwhelming favorite to win it all again.

Congrats to USC on their 13-0 run and on kicking OU's @ss. I guess the PAC 10 isn't overrated afterall?

AUBURN beat 5 ranked teams. USC beat 3.

AUBURN also is the only one of the three unbeatens to beat a ranked team on the road.

Impossible to say USC doesn't deserve it..but gee, Auburn kinda does too. :)

(I loved the idea of Auburn wearing their National Champion hats after the game last night and making their own trophy)
